Glasgow Started District 2B play off Friday night,
losing to a hot shooting Wolf Point team. The Wolves
like to shoot the long ball, they finished the night with 11
3-pointers in their 76-54 win.
Glasgow had no answer for Julian Benson or Kelby
Bauer. The seniors were hot from the start.
“They got on early,” said Glasgow Coach Paul Yoakam.
“We didn’t help ourselves on offense. We didn’t keep that
ball in our possession for long periods of time. We had a
lot of quick shots and the ball was back in their hands. We
learned from it and have that to work on this weekend.”
Yoakam went on to say that his offense will get better,
but the Scotties con not give teams that many chances.
Bauer buried back-to-back threes to get the Wolves
on the scoreboard. The senior would go on to bury six
treys in the game and score 14 of his 22 points in the first
half. Benson, a 6-foot forward, had the hot hand, scoring
18 points in the second half and finishing with a game-
high 35 points, including four treys.
The only problem the Wolves had was fouling too
much. Wolf Point had three players with three or four fouls
by halftime. That was evident at the free throw line where
the Scotties made 20 of 29 foul shots. Keigan Ingram went
13 for 17 from the stripe.
“We shot the ball well,” Yoakam said. “That was a
positive. There were some good things from that game. It
was Toryn Richards Nic Soloarzano play a couple quarters
and held his own. There were some upsides to the game.
It’s pretty tough to start on the road and in a conference
game. They are a senior-heavy team.”
Yoakam felt that his players were trying too hard and
not relying on each other.

to one second.
Wolf Point would build a nice lead, but Glasgow
would rally to get within striking distance, only to see the
Wolves start scoring once more. The Wolves led 21-12
after the first quarter. The Wolves led by 16 early in the
second quarter only to see Glasgow really to Within 37-27
on two throws from Ingram and 1 of 2 from Wyatt Babb at
the 1:57 mark. Benson drilled a three later for a 44-29 lead
and led 45-31 at the break.
Bauer started the second half off like he started the
game, nailing a pair of treys. Sandwiched in between was
a three-point play by Benson, giving the Wolves a 54-31
advantage. The Scotties did cut the deficit to 56-43 on Riley
Smith’s layup. Benson bagged a pair of threes to finish the
third with a 62-43 lead.
Glasgow lost Smith to fouls in the fourth, while none
of the Wolves fouled out.
Ingram led the Scotties with 19 points, Babb followed
with 10, Smith had eight, KJ Ingram seven, Toryn Richards
six, and Vaughn Miller four.
Kraven Silk added nine points for the Wolves, Gaige
Bushman five, Lennox Lilly and Peyton Summers two
each, and Jack Kolstad one.
Glasgow will be in Red Lodge for the annual Woodden
Tournament. The Scotties will play the host Rams Friday
night, then battle a tough Big Timber club Saturday.
“Red Lodge started five seniors against us last year,
so they are a new team,” said Yoakam. “Big Timber plays
before us so we get to watch them live. We just need to
get some game experience. I’m looking forward to this
weekend.”

going to attend the ceremonies at
Pearl. We acknowledged that we
would be there. Richard had a very
unsettling aura about him, that
day, very odd, indeed. We asked if
there was something wrong.
Richard said that “He’ll be
there, this time!”
We did not wish to pry but he did open up a
conversation piece, so we asked, just who do you
mean? He said that the pilot who sunk his ship, the
West Virginia, was coming to Pearl Harbor for the 50th
Anniversary.
“I have hated that SOB for 50 years and now I
will finally see him, again, but not through his gun
sights!”
Richard was very upset, and hardly ate his supper.
He shook his head, Lin hugged him goodnight, and
Bugler Richard Fiske, walked off to his apartment.
Richard “Dick” Fiske, was on deck of the West
Virginia that Sunday morning when he saw the
unbelievable 2nd wave of Japanese planes coming up
the slot heading towards Battleship Row.
“The Slot” is Kolekole Pass on the island of Oahu
through the Ko’olau Mountains and we have been there
many times. It is beautiful there but you get an eerie
feeling while walking the trails there, “chicken skin” the
locals call it!
The first wave of Japanese planes hit the USS
Arizona. As the planes reeked havoc amongst the other
ships, one plane in particular came at the West Virginia
and Richard was on the quarter deck of the Battleship
and he told us that he actually saw the face of the pilot,
and watched as he unleashed its deadly cargo.
The Japanese pilot, Zingi Abe later on said that most
of the damage had already been done by the first wave of
attack planes so his mission was 2nd priority. His bomb
hit the West Virginia and with a tremendous explosion
Richard ran taking cover with the rest of his men when
the order came to abandon ship. He and several others
had to jump overboard into the acrid water that was
covered in fuel and flames and they heard the horrible
cries of his injured shipmates.
He would tear up, understandably, at that horrible
memory. He said that he was a bit dazed but when he
was able to gather his senses he
swam to Ford Island where he laid
unable to join the battle against
the incoming wave of planes that
were soon to become the enemy of
the United States!
He told us how he saw that
“face” so many nights waking up
in cold sweats for 50 years. Now,
in a few days, he would be back
at Pearl Harbor, but NOT as a
tour guide and playing taps at the
waning daylight as the sun sets
into the sea, but as a survivor, who was reluctant to meet
the Japanese pilot whose bomb sunk the West Virginia.
We arrived at Pearl Harbor on December 7th as
promised and saw Richard, but to us it was not a photo
opportunity, but as a friend to offer support. Tourists
and the news media were milling about not really
understanding what this meeting might produce.
Richard was not in the least bit nervous now, but
stood amongst other survivors of that day, wearing
their white “Garrison” caps and talking to each other
reminiscing when it became utterly silent. I was
interviewing a Navajo Code talker when all of a sudden
he looked up. At the other end of the aisle was a now,
older Japanese man dressed in business clothes, but
Richard Fiske was wearing his uniform which was
adorned with his many medals.
Zingi Abe nodded and bowed his head in honor
and began to slowly walk toward us and Richard
acknowledged and slowly walked toward Mr. Abe. It was
eerily silent as the two approached each other. When
they were about two feet apart Richard’s face became
so peaceful looking and he reached for Zingi and they
embraced each other and held on with tears streaming
down both their faces.
Some of us saw an angel between both men with
his hand on their shoulders.
Well, that opened up the flood gates for all of us
bystanders, and we all cried. No applause was heard
amongst the several hundred people of both survivors
and family members. Just respectful silence.
For Richard Fiske and Zingi Abe, it was official, the
war was finally over for them.
Both men remained friends for the rest of their
lives. Mr. Abe would send roses to the Arizona Memorial
every year until his passing!
Rest In Peace you gallant warriors! You now belong
to the ages!
