Montana Senator continued from front
The text for the National Defense Authorization Act was
released last night (Tuesday). We’ve been fighting for this in
public and behind the scenes. And the good news is- that’s
included in this bill. And that’s great news, this overreaching
mandate on the COVID vaccines, we’re going to protect our
men and women in uniform who for whatever reason they
choose, they can still serve in the military, and will not be
forced to take the vaccine.”
Earlier this week we shared the news that House
Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was declaring
victory on this front, but now the official language is out.
The agreement also includes a pay raise for our troops.
Aaron Flint: “I’m hopeful that this will lead to a
cascading effect, where we finally tear down these walls,
and we say no more discrimination against health care
workers. And not only no more military service members
being kicked to the curb, but restitution and back pay for
those who are already discriminated against.”
Sen. Daines: “Yeah, and just to be clear, that fight’s not
over yet. I’m battling that literally today, because I want to
see backpay included as well. So we make those men and
women who were discharged whole on their pay. But at least
now they can get back in to fighting status, and it will not be
an ongoing barrier here for those who are in the military,
who are wondering, who maybe were afraid- they had
to choose between staying in and wearing the uniform or
getting the vaccine. That was an awful choice. It’s the wrong
choice. That part got fixed. But now we got to fight for the
back pay for those who did lose their service to the country
because they were discharged.”

Glasgow girls drop opener

Coaches normally would like to see their basketball
team open a new season with a non-conference game,
but at times you have to open with a conference contest.
Glasgow coach Cami Graham found herself and her
Scotties opening against Wolf Point in a District 2B contest.
Unfortunately, the Scotties had to play in the Wolves Den
Friday night as the Glasgow gym had the Class C Showcase.
The Scotties won the game last year, also in Wolf
Point. But Glasgow lost three starters to graduation. Still
second-year coach Cami Graham has some solid players
to guide the team this season. This time the game went to
Wolf Point, 43-32.

The teams had a hard time getting into their offense
with the defense playing the major role in the first quarter.
Wolf Point, which had a slew of athletes back from last
year’s club, held an 8-5 lead.
The Wolves went on a 12-3 run in the second stanza
for a 20-11 lead. Glasgow had gotten within 8-7 on two free
throws from senior Daley Aune. KJ St. Marks drilled a pair
of three-pointers, giving the Wolves a 15-9 lead. Aune and
freshman Joely Chappell combined for three free throws
to close out the half and get the Scotties within 20-13.
Aune and Carly Nelson had a bucket each to open
the second half and get the Scotties with 20-17. But the
Wolves had an answer with Sierra Hamilton scoring on the
other end. Chappell answered, but once again the Wolves
answered. J’Elle Garfield made back-to-back buckets that
put the Wolves up 30-22.
Wolf Point maintained a 10-point lead throughout
the fourth quarter to get the win. Katelyn MacDonald
gave the Wolves a 40-26 lead late in the game. Glasgow
bucket on a running shot.

There was a farmer who grew watermelons. He Get your Free Remington Calendar

After some careful thought, he came up with a
clever idea that he thought would scare the kids away
for sure. He made up a sign and posted it in the field.
The next night, the kids showed up and they saw the
sign which read, “Warning! One of the watermelons in
this field has been injected with cyanide.”
The kids ran off, made up their own sign and posted
it next to the farmer’s sign. When the farmer returned, he
surveyed the field. He noticed that no watermelons were
missing, but the sign next to his read, “Now there are two!”
“In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season;
the Christians called it ‘Christmas’ and went to
church; the Jews called it ‘Hanukkah’ and went to
synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank.
People passing each other on the street would say
‘Merry Christmas!’ or ‘Happy Hanukkah!’ or (to the
atheists) ‘Look out for the wall!’”

Northeast Montana Havre check station results for the 2022 Season
The results are in from the
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Havre
check station for the 2022 hunting
season. The check station was open for
eight weekends from Oct. 8 (the open
of general antelope) through Nov. 27
(the end of the deer/elk general season).
Overall, hunter numbers and mule deer
harvest were still above average.
Biologists gather a lot of valuable
information and biological data on
game animals brought through check
stations. FWP appreciates all hunters’
cooperation in this effort. Note that the
harvest data described below includes
only animals that were brought through
the Havre check station and is only a
partial representation of the region-
wide harvest.
Hunter numbers (1,971) were
down 6% from 2021, but still 13% above
the long-term average.
“Hunter numbers have been
highly variable this year,” noted
Havre-area biologist Scott Hemmer,
who manages the station. “Weekend
weather and hunting conditions were
relatively poor during several weekends
of the general hunting season with a
mix of muddy, cold, and windy weather
limiting access and participation.”
“High numbers early on and
toward the end of the general deer and
elk season, in the end, resulted in above
average hunter numbers for the year,”
added Hemmer.
Mule deer harvest totaled 609 for
the year, which was down 28% from last
year but still 13% above the long-term
average.
“Overall, hunter reports of mule
deer numbers were mixed,” added
Hemmer. “Some hunters reported
average to slightly above average
numbers, while others reported seeing
fewer deer than in recent years.”
For the year, 137 white-tailed deer
were brought by the station, which was
1% lower than 2021, and 11% below the
long-term average.
“White-tailed deer hunter reports
were generally favorable except in areas
where epizootic hemorrhagic disease
(EHD) was more severe last year,” said
Hemmer.
Antelope harvest, whose general
season ended on Nov. 13, saw slightly
lower numbers than 2021, and 25%
below the long-term average. 187
antelope were brought by the check
station this year.
“Antelope populations and license
quotas in many districts have both been
on an upward trend but are still below
the long-term average in some hunting
districts due in part to several severe
winters in the last 10-12 years,” said
Hemmer.
For the year, 38 elk were recorded,
which is 3% below last year and the
long-term average.
For the eight weeks that the check
station was open, the pheasant harvest
of 530 birds is above last year (11%), but
still well below the long-term average
(-30%). Sharp-tailed grouse (145 birds)
harvest was below last year’s total, but
still above the long-term average. Gray
(Hungarian) partridge harvest (83) was
the same as last year and above of the
long-term average.
“Upland bird hunter reports this
year have been mixed, with better
reports on the eastern end of the region
and well below average on the west
end,” noted Hemmer. “The drought
conditions have led to patchy habitat
conditions and bird distribution,
and our adult-to-juvenile ratio,
particularly with sharp-tails and gray
partridge, suggested conditions may
have impacted nest success and brood
survival.”
Although wetland conditions this
year were generally poor and early cold
weather led to ice covering most open
water, duck harvest (83) was down only
slightly from last year and was well
above the long-term average.
