Nyquist plays
final match

Every year sports teams lose
some seniors. For the Glasgow
Scotties the fall teams have seen a
low number of seniors. The cross
country lost two, a boy and a girl.
The football team lost four and the
volleyball lost one. The seniors will
be hard to replace.
The lone senior in volleyball
is Tatum Nyquist. She played her
final match Friday at the Northern
B Divisional Tournament held in
Malta. Nyquist has been a starter the
last two years. She was a team leader
and played the whole match.
“She was our ace and kill
leader,” said Glasgow coach Brooke
Martin. “She was so good in the
back row. She was our most accurate
serve-receive passers. She had great
coverage and was great at reading
the tip. She contributed offensively.

Mrs. William Lindstrom of Hinsdale had the
501 1st Ave. S distinction of having six sons in the service of Uncle
Sam. Five of her sons were in the Navy and the sixth
in the Army. A seventh son, Carl, was a student at

Glasgow had a good season,despite losing out of the
divisional tournament in two matches.
“I was really happy with the season,” said
Martin. “we would like to have won some matches
at divisional. I still don’t feel that we were the fourth
best team going into the divisional. It really hurts you
to be young, so that was a struggle. Our losses have
to drive us just like our wins. That has to make us
better. And with this group of girls I think is going to
make us better. It’s disappointing not to finish better
in the tournaments. But the early season losses we
revenged at the end. How we played and how the
freshmen came on. In the beginning they weren’t
much of a factor, but at the end they were block leads
and kill leaders. Ella (Eggebrecht) came on as the
libero. That’s a positive thing for next year.”
Martin has her starting five back and a slew of
experience coming back. Her two freshmen, Gina
Page and Halle Hunter have a full season under their
belt. Hayden Green and Macy Martin got lots of
experience as a blocker and setter, respectively. Joely
Chappell was a solid hitter.

in a loser out match. The teams played a tough first
game before the Wolves won 28-26. Page tied the
set at 4 with a kill. The freshman also had a kill to

“It was a battle. The girls played so hard,” said
Martin. “Cierra Hamilton (Wolf Point) hits hard.
And they decided to set her up everywhere. She was
all over the place. Those two (Halle and Ella) took
shot after shot digging those balls up. They decided
that was their game plan to get the ball to Cierra.”
Fairfield swept the Scotties on Thursday.
Glasgow did have one good set.
“It took a while for the girls to get warmed
up. You can expect that with a young team,” said
Martin. “Fairfield was definitely dominant that entire
tournament. So that was a pretty tough draw since
most of the girls had never played at that level. They
got it together after that first set. There was a lot of
fire power. Fairfield had a lot of power hitters and
had a pretty good libero.”
So, exactly what is a libero?
Do you ever go to a volleyball match and see a
player on the same team wearing a different color jersey?
A libero on an indoor volleyball team who serves
as a defensive specialist and is not allowed to serve or
rotate to the front line. The libero wears a different
color jersey from the rest of the team and is thus easily
recognizable for the officials.
There are several other unique rules regarding the
position. Notably, the libero is barred from completing
an “attack hit”—which refers to hitting the ball
strategically into the opponent’s court—if the ball is
above the net at the time of contact. In addition, player
replacements involving the libero do not count against
the maximum number of substitutions allowed during
a match. However, a libero can be replaced only by the
person whom he or she originally replaced. Given that
the libero’s specialty is defense and is especially skilled
at receiving serves. Teams are not required to use a
libero, but those that do are allowed to have only one on
the court at a time.
The position was created in 1998, and it is accepted
by most volleyball governing bodies. The addition of
the libero to volleyball is credited with increasing the
length of rallies.

Montana Bound!

So the lake is freezing early this year
and I am more than ready to start
my bi-annual westward migration.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love my
trips back to Montana either way,
but when I can’t get home to my
island, the urge to travel west gets
intense. First I must pack and then
I will be Montana Bound!
I used to love to pack but not so
much any more. That is most likely
due to the fact that I never pack
the right things. Lets be honest,
Montana weather does give me a
run for my money. It’s 32 degrees
here in Minnesota this morning
(Wednesday) and not likely to
warm up much. But I’ve seen the
