Chapter V

This chapter presents the summary of the findings of the study.

From these findings, conclusions were made and recommendations
were drawn out from them.

Summary of Findings:

This research gave the following findings based on the study

conducted.

1. Based on the gathered data presented in the Table 1.1 from the

Problem 1 (Demographic Profile of the Respondents), all the

respondents belong to the “17 to 19 years old” age range gaining the

90 (100%) votes.

2. Table 1.2 from the Problem 1 states that 47 (52.2%) of the

respondents are Female, 41 (45.5%) are “Male,” and 2 (2.2%) made

their gender confidential or chose not to say.

3. Based on the gathered data presented from the Problem 1 Table

1.3, 27 (30%) of the respondents belonged to the “STEM- Engineering

Gold” followed by the other class sections: “STEM- Engineering

Fuchsia” with 23 (25.6 %) respondents, “STEM- Engineering Ebony”

obtaining 21 (23.3%), and “STEM- Engineering Hazel” with 19 (21.1)

votes.

4. According to the gathered data presented from the Problem 1 Table

1.4, majority of the 90 respondents got a “91-95 ” average grade

gaining 44 (48.9%) votes, 20 (22.2%) of them attained a “95 above”

grade, 17 (18.9%) achieved an “86-90” average grade, 7 (7.8%) of

them achieved “81-85” grades, 2 (2.2%) obtained “76-80” average

grade, and no one from the respondents obtained “70-75” average

grade from the first semester of SY 2021-2022. Grade 12 STEM-

Engineering Senior High School Students exhibit good academic

performance, as evidenced by their GWA, according to the data.

5. Based on the gathered data presented from the Problem 1 Table

1.5, majority of the respondents take “30 minutes above” to fall

asleep at night gaining 41 (45.6%) votes, and “20-25 minutes” and

“10-15 minutes” time ranges both received 22 (24.4%) votes, and only

5 (5.6%) for the “5 minutes.” To the results, the majority of the

respondents takes a lot of time to fall asleep.

6. Problem 1 Table 1.6 shows that almost the majority of the

respondents said they usually sleep “5-7 hours” which received 54

(60%) votes, 19 (21.1%) of them sleeps only “3-4 hours,” and “17

(17.8% ) to sleeps “8 hours and above.” As noticed, if you combine all

the results of the hour ranges given that are below the average sleep

(8 hours below) a person needs, the majority of the respondents fall to

having sleep loss.

7. Based on the gathered data presented from the Problem 1 Table

1.7, 41 (45.6%) respondents said they usually wake up in the

morning “Between 7- 9 AM,” 27 (30% ) respondents said they usually

wake up in the morning “Between 4-6 AM,” and 18 (20%) respondents

said they usually wake up in the morning “After 9 AM.” Only 4 (3.6%)
of the respondents said they usually wake up in the morning “Before 4

AM.”

8. Gathered data presented in the Problem 2 Table 2.2 (page 34)

reported that the respondents “Often” experience the given questions

related to the common sympotons of sleep deprivation

Mental/Cognitive Performance and Mood/Behavioral Change.

9. Table 3.1 (page 36) from the Problem 3 (Environmental Factors and

Time Management), above half of the respondents doesn’t live from a

crowded place gaining 49 (54.4%) votes and living with a proper

vintilation at home gaining 53 (58.9%) votes.

10. Most of the respondents are not a sleeper based on the gathered

data presented as well on the Table 3.1 (page 36) from Problem 3

(Environmental Factors and Time Management) gaining 53 (58.9%).

11. Although most of the respondents are hard sleepers, 15 (16.6%) of

the light sleepers are easily distracted by noise vehicles when sleeping,

16(17.7%) by cat and dog noises, and 9(10%) by neighbor/people

conversing. Alternatively, heavy sleeper respondents appear to have

no issue sleeping through noise and other interruptions.

12. From the data presented in Problem 3 Table 3.4, the respondents

are “Sometimes” flooded with house chores and responsibilities

gaining 35 (38.9%) votes. For the second question, with the same

value of votes, they tend to “Always” do a lot of thinking before

sleeping. When it comes to do important things, the respondents

“Sometimes” tell themselves that it's better to wait until they are

feeling more inspired to do it gaining 39 (43.3%) votes.

13. According to the data gathered in Table 3.5, the majority of

respondents said they tend to use their gadgets “30 minutes and

above” before sleeping gaining 63 (70%) votes, 14 (15.6%)

respondents answered 10-15 minutes, 11 (12.2%) of them answered

20-25 minutes, while the rest 2 (2.2%) respondents answered 5

minutes.

14. According to the data gathered in Table 3.6 (page 13), when the

respondents were asked about which of the following statements best

describes their attitude to deadlines, almost half of them 43 (47.8%)

likes to pressure themselves as they tend to work best during

deadlines, 29 (32.2%) of them tends to be careful, 10 (11.1%) likes

challenging themselves by racing against the clock, and 8 (8.9%) of

them are punctual and finish things on time. As noticed, most of the

respondents are likely to pressure themselves on deadlines and this

falls to procrastination and time management.

15. Based on the data gathered in Table 3.7 (page 43), when the

respondents where asked about how they handle when they have

something pressing important to do, 39 (43.3%) of them starts

working on it, but move on to something else if I get bored or

frustrated, 31(34.4%) they start it right away, 16 (17.8%) respondents

answered they “Start working it but drag it out with other

distractions. The rest of the 4 (4.4%) respondents tends to like

procrastination. As noticed, most of the respondents get distracted

when they’re not motivated and have been struggling in keeping their

enthusiasm to get things done.

Conclusions.

Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions

are formulated:

1. Majority of the Grade 12- STEM Engineering students exhibits

good academic performance reflected from their average grade from

the last first semester SY. 2021-2022.

2. The sleep latency of the respondents or the duration of how long

does it takes them to fall asleep at night reported to be 30 minutes

and above, more than the normal sleep latency that generally

hovers between 10 and 20 minutes.

3. Most of the students’ sleep duration reported to be 5-7 hours only

but combining all the results of the hour ranges given that are below

the average sleep a person needs, the majority of the respondents fall

to having sleep loss.

4. Most of the Grade 12 STEM- Engineering students often experience

the common symptoms/ signs of sleep loss related to the

Mental/Cognitive Performance and Mood/Behavioral Change factors

from the given tests which reflects to their cognitive functions and

mood swings. They often have problems on sleeping at night, feeling

sleeping during the day, and feeling exhausted when waking up. They

often show signs of memory loss, stressing out by minor

inconveniences and keeping their focus, being moody and etc.

5. For the environmental factors, half of the respondents are not light

sleepers, having a proper ventilation at home as well as living away

from the crowded place may be the cause. Half of them are light

sleepers and get easily distracted from environmental noise mostly

from cat and dog noises and vehicle noises due to living at the

crowded place.

6. Most of the respondents always do a lot of thinking (overthinking)

at night. This could be cause from processing what has happened

during the day or worriness. Our daily worries can often creep into

our thoughts at night-time and this can seriously disturb our sleep.

7. The students have difficulties in managing their time doing things

they need to do. Almost majority of them have been struggling in

keeping their enthusiasm to get things done immediately which may

lead to procrastination down to sleep deprivation due to time

management.

8. Most of the students exhibit a good academic performance reflected

from their average grades. However, it contradicted those several

studies in terms of academic procrastination and performance, as well

as the relationship between these sleep loss factors as the findings

somehow says as the students seem to experience such changes in

behavior and in mental/cognitive performance. Their emotional and

psychological health seems declining due to sleep loss or anxiety.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the

following are recommended:

1. As the study shows that students ironically exhibits good academic

performance despite struggling emotionally and physically with sleep

loss factors, improving Check-ins or Check-in Activities at school as

well as at home would be a great help. Taking a time and creating a

place where people, not just students, can pause, explore, manage,

and understand their emotions and situations should be taken some

considerations too as this concerns should taken address especially at

the young age.

2. With the study’s findings and conlusions that remarks the sleep

deprivaton factors such as environmental and time management truly

causes the students’ difficulties in education, sleep and health,

student’s situation before or after with the new academic system

where they continue their academic journey at home should be taken

account. Participation of the people around them and self-control from

dithering could help. But these could be taken into some

considerations too as they might still unable to adjust and adapt with

the sudden changes happened.

3. The findings and conclusions are just a primary study and

conducted only with primary tests with the help of past literatures

and studies. The researchers are not yet eligible to conlude things

without proper consulations with the professionals in the field. The

researchers recommend to access more tests and directly consult

eligible professionals regarding to this sector for more accurate and

viable results.
