appropriate to their goals.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? Students will be able to share the many
types of benefits to having healthy behaviors by making a podcast.
Selected Instructional Software Tool: Anchor

Description of Software: Anchor is a podcast platform that allows students and teachers to create
and share their own podcasts for learning purposes.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
The day before I give students this lesson, I will share the pre lesson podcast about healthy
behaviors in order to get students ready with information to talk about once they came to class.
Students will come into class with data they have collected about what they think healthy behaviors
are and how they affect our health. Once in the classroom I will start the lesson by making students
aware of the learning goal of this lesson and putting it on the board for all of them to see/read along
with me as we discuss it. With the information they found from investigating, I will have students

use the Anchor tool to make a podcast of their own sharing their findings and what they believe
about healthy behaviors and its effects on people’s health. I will conclude the lesson by sharing each
podcast with the whole class and discussing who does or does not agree with each student’s
answers.
Managing student learning: By using this tool as a pre lesson, students are given the opportunity to switch
from passively learning by listening to me teach through the podcast, to actively engaging in learning when I
task them with the job of investigating and finding out information for the lesson. Additionally, the tool once
again causes students to be active in their learning by tasking them with creating their own podcast from the
information they have gathered. In order to be certain students are prepared with enough information to
make the podcast with, they will share their written notes on what they found and participate in small group
discussions with their peers, as well as with me
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
This lesson provides students with Means of Action and Expression by giving students the option to
record themselves orally, as well as provide a written transcript of the information you share on the
podcast. With this option, students who feel more comfortable voice recording themselves instead
of writing have the podcast to rely on. On the other hand, students who are not strong speakers can
rely on the opportunity to write up what they found and provide the transcript along with the voice
recording of them reading off the script.
Reflection: I believe that students will find my pre lesson podcast and investigative activity engaging.
I also believe that participating in the activity will make students much more likely to be engaged
during the in-person lesson inside the classroom because they themselves have researched the
information to share in the classroom, instead of the teacher. I had a lot of fun making my own
podcast so I look forward to hearing the students share the information they find from their
investigations on their own podcasts.
