Title: PROJECT TAKE TALK: HEALTH EDUCATION BRIEF DISCOURSE

TO IMPROVE LEARNERS AND TEACHERS’ PROFICIENCY IN

INFECTIOUS AND COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

I. Rationale

The government and the Department of Education prioritize health and

well-being, especially since students and teachers will face each other this

school year as part of the mandatory progressive face-to-face classes. The

risk of contracting infectious and communicable diseases is high. However,

the more pressing issue is that our clients' knowledge of avoiding and

combating these pathogens and other disease-causing elements is

inadequate. There were already several studies that would prove this claim.

For example, in a study by Gregorio et. Al. about the knowledge, attitudes,

and practices of public secondary school teachers on Zika Virus Disease: A

basis for the development of evidence-based Zika educational materials for

schools in the Philippines, findings show that there was good knowledge

among teachers on vector transmission of ZIKV but poor knowledge on other

aspects of the disease (Gregorio, 2019). In a separate study by Almomani et

al. entitled the effects of a health education intervention on knowledge and

attitudes towards chronic non-communicable diseases among undergraduate

students in Jordan, research indicates that students have poor knowledge and

negative attitudes regarding risk factors, preventive measures, and

complications of CNCDs. (NCBI - WWW Error Blocked Diagnostic, 2022).

There was little to no available research that directly states the knowledge

level of Filipino Junior High school students regarding communicable

diseases, making it a research gap. There were, however, several studies that

say health education is effective. In a study by Wang et al. entitled the impact

of health education on knowledge and behaviors toward infectious diseases

among students in Gansu Province, China., It is highly recommended that

health education should be done because it contributes to student knowledge

and behaviors toward infectious diseases (Wang, 2018)

The poor knowledge of communicable diseases is evident among the

learners of Pangasinan School of Arts and Trades. The Proponent would like

to solve the problem by introducing the Project Take Talk, a health education

brief discourse among learners and teachers. The proponents shall prepare

one topic to discuss for 15 minutes from one classroom to another. Topics

shall be communicable diseases, their history, facts and figures, and how to

prevent and treat them.

The innovation shall be called the Project Take Talk, where proponents

and the school nurse shall take 15 minutes every class hour once a month to

discuss significant communicable diseases rampant and relevant on that

month. A planned matrix of what topics to discuss per month for a year shall

be made for approval. Recommendations of the topics to discuss are as

follows:

Table 1. Month and Topic to be discussed

Month Topic
January Dengue
February Diphtheria
March Measles
April Polio
May HIV
June TB
July MALARIA
August Influenza
September Diarrhea
October Bronchitis
November Tuberculosis
December COVID-19

The flow of discussion shall follow the format below:

A. Background of the Disease

B. Cases in the world and the Philippines

C. What it is

D. Causes

E. Ways to prevent

The innovation aims to improve by 100% the number of proficient

Grades 9 students in communicable diseases, as evidenced by comparing

pretest and posttest results.

Health Education is the MAPEH subject, but communicable diseases

are not given much attention. This talk shall be different as it shall welcome

exciting questions from the students and be answered in real-time.

Recommendations for hand washing for a minute or two shall also be made at

the end of every talk to promote proper hygiene to avoid or eliminate disease-

causing pathogens. The Proponent, clinic teacher, and MAPEH teachers will

manage the project. Each was assigned a role to manage the innovation from

pre-implementation to post-implementation efficiently. Once the innovation

has been proven successful, it will be shared with other schools in the district
so they can replicate it. We have years to nurture the learners as part of the

agency's Vision and Mission.
