Introduction
The Vessel W-ORIGINAL is a Bulk Carrier with an overall length 229 m sailing under the flag of Liberia. Her Gross Tonnage is
44325 and Deadweight is 81874T. Vessel was built in 2012.
The undertaken work consists of the feasibility study for the potential installation of ERMA FIRST ballast water treatment
system inside Engine room with 1 x 1200m3/h capacity system along with its pipe routing to comply with the D2 regulation
(as per IMO/USCG).
An onboard survey was conducted to perform 3D laser scanning, site survey of the existing ballast system and identify
locations for installation of BWTS equipment. The vessel is equipped with two Ballast Pumps (each with capacity: 1200 m3/h,
25m) one working at time for operation, both located in Engine Room. This report is prepared to check the feasibility for
installation of BWTS system inside Engine Room.
ERMA FIRST BWTS (1 x 1200 m3/h) is considered for the feasibility study.
The report details the above mentioned BWTS system integration with vessels ballast system and the modifications that are
required in the vessel for the installation of BWTS system.
Classification Society: LR

As understood from the received as build vessels documents, below is the list of the Ballast Tanks that will have to be filled
with ballast water.

Equipment Table
The undertaken work constitutes the feasibility study for the potential retrofit installation of ERMA FIRST BWTS. Based on
the survey on board and 3-D scanning of the vessel’s available spaces, different installation scenarios are designed and
investigated. The main goals are:
The ERMA FIRST FIT Water Treatment System applies established Chlorine (Cl 2) technology to oxidize and disinfect Aquatic
Invasive Species (AIS).
The ERMA FIRST Ballast Water Treatment System consists of a filter element for particles larger than 40 μm, a disinfection
unit (electrolytic cell), a Transformer/Rectifier unit, Total Residual Oxidants (TRO’s), neutralization module, monitoring and
control auxiliary equipment (Salinity or Conductivity meter – SMD - Flow Switch, Temperature sensor, pressure indicator)
and BWTS control panel (includes control switches, PLC, data logger and HMI).
FILTER
ELECTROLYTIC CELL
The operation of ERMA FIRST BWTS FIT is divided in two different operational modes: ballasting and de-ballasting.
In both modes, the ballast pumps are in operation but the valve arrangement is such that during ballasting mode, water is
directed from the sea chest, through the BWTS to the ballast tanks, and during de-ballasting mode, water is directed from
ballast tanks to the overboard discharge point. By-pass is also an option in case of an emergency situation.
During uptake, water is being pumped from the sea chest by the ballast pump. Ballast water is directed from the pump
delivery to the BWTS inlet.
The filter’s effluent is then directed to electrolyzer for the second stage of BWTS process. A flow switch, installed on the
inlet line of the electrolyzer, activates the electrolytic process when flow is detected. In the electrolyzer, ballast water
already treated at the primary stage, is exposed to a low-voltage direct current causing electrolysis. During this process,
TRO is produced at concentration up to 6 mg/L. A temperature sensor installed downstream of the electrolyzer stops the
BWTS process when high temperature is measured. The electrolyzer operates optimally at waters with salinity equal or
greater than 0,9 PSU and temperature down to -2°C. Chlorine concentration is continuously monitored via a TRO device.
The result of the TRO device is used to drive the current across the electrodes for the production up to 4-6 mg/L of TRO.
The potential across the electrodes is continuously changed when the resistance, i.e. salinity of the ballast water changes.
The products of the BWTS treatment process flow from the BWTS outlet into the ballast water tanks of the vessel, so that
the residual oxidants disinfect any harmful organisms taken on board.
The treated ballast water remains in the ballast tanks until the de-ballasting operation is due to start. TRO is consumed by
any viable remaining microorganisms and therefore is gradually reduced. It is calculated that after 4 days no TRO is still
contained in the treated water.
During de-ballasting ERMA FIRST BWTS FIT is by-passed, as no further treatment of ballast water is needed. Residual
chlorine possibly remaining in the ballast water tanks is neutralized by the BWTS neutralization module, which consists of
TRO monitors, a chemical dosing pump and a portable chemical storage tank of adequate volume.
During de-ballasting a TRO monitor measures TRO in the ballast water to be discharged and determines neutralization
dosing rate. A second TRO monitor verifies that TRO concentration is below 0.1ml/lt prior to discharge. If the chlorine
concentration is greater than 0.1 mg/L (Maximum Allowable Discharge Concentration, MADC) the neutralizing agent dosing
rate is automatically increased to the dosing pump’s maximum capacity.
