– Introduction to the Reproductive System: Speed


Dating activity

Standard: SC.912.L.16.13: Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the human reproductive system.
Describe the process of human development from fertilization to birth and major changes that occur in each
trimester of pregnancy.

 Objective: SWBAT recall the function of the reproductive system.


 SWBAT connect specific factors to an increase or decrease in blood flow.
Instructional Event 1: Bellwork

● Time: 5 min

● Teacher: Greet students at door, routines/procedures – attendance, pass out work, etc…, monitor discussions,
and facilitate responses in whole group.

Student: Answer the bellwork.

Instructional Event 2: Reproductive System: Speed Dating activity

● Time: 30 min.

● Teacher: Display and share the Speed Dating Reproductive System PPT with the students (each class will
need their own slide deck). Prepare index cards for the students with the terms from the Speed Dating
Reproductive System PPT slides. Review the procedures for Speed Dating. Organize group of 4. Distribute an
index card with a term from the Speed Dating Reproductive System PPT slide to each student. Display the
Speed Dating Reproductive System PPT and review the requirements for the activity. Give students time to
complete their individual slides. Use the speed dating strategy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=ew28a3OKttk), giving each student in the pair 30 seconds-60 seconds to explain their term. Complete as
many rounds as possible, leaving 5 min. for debrief.

● Materials: Speed Dating Reproductive System PPT slides, index cards prepared for each student, discussion
questions

● Student: Students will research their assigned index card structure and complete their assigned slide on the
Speed Dating Reproductive System PPT slides. They will practice the speed dating strategy by rotating
partners and explain their assigned structure in 30-60 seconds. Complete as many rounds as possible before
debrief.

● Resource: Speed Dating Reproductive System PPT slides, index card with assigned reproductive structure,
computer and/or textbook for research

● Opportunities for Differentiation: students may work individually, collaboratively as a group, or whole class.
● Assessment: Assess that student correctly completed the their assigned slide for the Speed Dating
Reproductive System PPT.

Instructional Event 3: Wrap up and Debrief

● Time: 5-10 min (time permitting)

● Teacher: Place the students in groups of 4 and students will each provide an answer in a round robin
fashion to share their thoughts on the following discussion questions as the teacher circulates through the
class.
Discussion Questions: What female reproductive parts are used in reproduction? How are they used? What
male reproductive parts are used in reproduction? How are they used? How is the first trimester of fetal
development different from the third trimester? How are the male and female reproductive systems similar?
How are the male and female reproductive systems different?

● Student: Students will answer the discussion questions as an Exit ticket

● Resource: Biology Quarter 1 Unit 2 Day 2 Blood Flow Student Worksheet, Discussion Question hand out

● Assessment: Students will correctly answer the Discussion Questions as an Exit Ticket

Instructional Event 4: Extension

● Time: (time permitting)

● Teacher: Have the students compare human fetal development to the fetal development of other animals.
