Introduction
This module contains learning activities that will enhance your understanding on the types of matter
around us. Through this you will be able to conduct experimentations to discover the properties of matter and its
differences and similarities.
On the last part of this module is a self-assessment that will help you assess the level of your learning for
this lesson.
Hope you’ll enjoy the activities and welcome to the exciting world of science.
Lesson 1. Matter
Topic. Characteristics of Materials Around Us, Observing Characteristics of Materials
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of the things around them.

Performance Standard: The learner independently practices and describe the things around them.
Dominican core value focus: Excellence

Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC’s)

Good day dear learner, my name is teacher Ronna Jean M. Tonog, I will be your teacher for this school
year. Due to the pandemic (CoVid19) we’ve been facing lots of challenges including our way of learning. For
this reason we will have a new normal education which refers to learning through this module and internet
connection. We may not see each other personally, but I’m really sure that we will still have lots of fun and
excitement in exploring this world of science. I always believe that we Josephians can always survive this
challenge and who knows, this pandemic could be over sooner than we thought. Let’s all think positive and
have faith in God for He will help us all overcome this challenge.
It’s a good day to learn today but before we start our lesson let us first pray and ask for our Lord’s
guidance. Together with your family or the person with you right now let us pray the

Hello dear friend, my name is
Marco. I want to learn about
the about matter. Will you
help me explore it?

Activity 1. Wordstorm

Get Ready Can you describe each

object?

Direction: Look at the objects below. Can you describe each one?

The flower is
__________________________. It is ______________________________.
The box is ____________________________. It is ______________________________.
The juice is ___________________________. It is ______________________________.

They are all matter.

Matter is around you.
What are properties of
matter? Let us find out.

Discussion
There are many ways to describe the things around you. You can describe them by looking at their color.
Color is one of the characteristic of the objects. It makes things different or similar to each other. An object may
be blue, yellow, red, green, orange, violet, white, or black. You use your eyes to tell the color of things.

Apple is
What is the color of the apple? red.

How about the mango and

guava?

Mango is yellow. Guava is green.

Objects are also known by their texture. Texture helps you feel the objects around you. Objects can be
smooth or rough. They can also be soft or hard. You use your skin to feel objects.

Cotton is smooth and soft. Stone is rough and hard.

Another characteristics of objects is odor.Odor helps you identify objects by how they
smell. Objects can have a strong odor. Others have no odor at all. Objects with no odor are odorless. You use
your nose to smell the odor of the objects.

A perfume has a strong odor. A candle is odorless.

Aside from color, texture . and color, you can also describe objects , you can also describe objects as
light and heavy. Can you describe the following objects in the following pictures? Write heavy or light in the
box.

The hammer is
The paper is

The mass of an object tells you if it is heavy or light. Mass is the amount of material iin an object. When
an object is heavy, it has more more. If it is light, it has less mass. Mass has nothing to do with the size of the
object. Look at the following pictures.

The balloon is bigger than the cake. But which of them is lighter? The balloon is light because it has less
mass on it. The cake is heavy because it has more mass in it.
Objects have different sizes. The size of an object tells you if the object is long or short, big or small, or
thin or thick.

A log is big and long. A barbecue stick is short and thin.

This book is small and thick.

Shape is another characteristic of objects. Some objects are round. Others are rectangle or square. Look
at the objects around you. The shape of an object makes it similar or different from other objects.

A round balloon a square clock a

rectangular towel
All objects occupy space. The shape and size of an object can tell how much space it can occupy. A big
object occupies a big space. A small object occupies small space.

How many toys you can put in your toy box? If your
toys are small, you can put many toys in your toy box. If your
toys are big, you can only put few of them in it.

Volume how much space an object occupies. Some objects do not have their
own shape. They take the shape of their container.
Water has no shape. It takes the shape of its container. A big container can occupy a big volume of
water. A small container can occupy a small volume of water.
Here are other examples of how objects occupy space.

You occupy space in your bed when you are sleeping.

Air occupies the space inside the balloon.

Anything that has mass and takes up

space is called matter.
Matter differs in color, odor, size,
shape, volume, and texture.
