SUBJECT : TEACHING SCIENCE IN ELEMENTARY ( Physics, Earth and Space Science )

TOPIC: Components of Instructional Planning
MODULE : 1
OBJECTIVES :
The student should be able to:
1. Describe your typical instructional planning process
2. Identify events that must be included in an instructional plan
3. Examine the elements of an effective instruction and their relationship
4. Characterize an effective instructional plan

LESSON PROPER
I. READ
Examine the table below:
Instructional Planning Domain STEPS

Deciding what to teach 1. Assess the student’s skills and knowledge

2. Analyze the instructional task
3. Establish a logical instructional sequence
4. Consider the classroom elements that may affect
instruction
5. Identify gaps between actual and expected performance

Deciding how to teach 1. Select instructional goals

2. Select instructional methids and materials
3. Pace instruction appropriately
4. Monitor performance and re-plan instruction

Communicating goals and 1. Involve the students in learning

expectations to the leareners
2. State expectations
3. Maintain high standards

Robert Gagne developed that has guided trainers and weducators in designing instruction for
trainings and classroom-based teaching.
1. Gaining attention ( reception)
2. Informing learners of the objective ( expectancy )
3. Stimulating recall of prior learning ( retrieval )
4. Presenting the stimulus ( selective perception )
5. Providing learning guidance ( semantic encoding )
6. Eliciting performance ( responding )
7. Providing Feedback ( reinforcement)
8. Assessing performance ( retrieval)
9. Enhancing retention and transfer ( generalization )
II. REFLECT

How do you plan for instruction?

III. RESPOND
Accomplish the activity sheets provided for this lesson.

ACTIVITY SHEET
MODULE 3

Provide description for each elements below:

 Learning environment
Learning environment refers to the diverse physical locations, contexts, and cultures in which
students learn. Since students may learn in a wide variety of settings, such as outside-of-school
locations and outdoor environments, the term is often used as a more accurate or preferred
alternative to classroom, which has more limited and traditional connotations a room with rows
of desks and a chalkboard.

 Clear, shared Outcomes

Clear, Shared Outcomes The learning outcomes are shared and internalized by teachers and
students. These outcomes anchor and guide the choices of instructional activities, materials,
practice assignments, and assessment tasks. Outcomes are understood and used by students to
set goals, guide learning, and prompt self-reflection.
 Varied content, materials and methods of instruction
Students explore ideas and information in varied ways and access learning through multiple
entry points. Teachers select content and materials to engage and meet the needs of all
learners. About their learning and are taught how to make those choices well.

 Practice and Feedback

Practice is defined as any activity in which students engage their knowledge or skills, while
feedback is information given to students about their performance that guides future behavior.
 Complex thinking and transfer
Complex Thinking and Transfer Students are coached and taught to engage in higher order
thinking through instructional activities and practice tasks. Curriculum, instruction and
assessments are designed to prompt complex thinking, integration of concepts and ideas, and
application of learned skills to new material or novel situations
Illustrate in a diagram or graphic organizer the relationship among these elements. How do
they foster student engagement?
Gaining attention Presenting the stimulus Providing Feedback
( reception) ( selective perception ) ( reinforcement)

Informing learners of Providing learning

Assessing performance
the guidance ( semantic
( retrieval)
objective(expectancy) encoding )

Stimulating recall of Enhancing retention

Eliciting performance
prior learning and transfer
( responding )
(retrieval) ( generalization )

Answer the following questions :

1. What of the nine events do you include in your instructional planning?

For me all of the 9 Instructional method/planning is important because it is the aspect of
teaching and learning to determine the activities of teachers and students. Appropriate
instructional methods influence many motivational variables of learners such as a tendency to
think critically.
2. What do you consider in choosing these priorities?
By choosing you need to consider the learners that will benefits all of this so that you no one
will left behind. And also, Gagne’s theories provide a great deal of valuable information to
teachers. Applying Gagne's nine-step model is an excellent way to ensure an effective and
systematic learning program as it gives structure to the lesson plans and a holistic view to the
teaching.
3. What is most important and why?
For me all of the 9 instructional method/planning is important because Instructional materials
are essential since they help the teacher and learners avoid overemphasis on recitation and
rote learning that can easily dominate a lesson. Resource materials allow learners to have
practical experiences which help them to develop skills and concepts and to work in a variety of
ways.
