perhaps of Europe, and so, when they were permitted to return to the Philippines, although their power to
administer parishes was restricted except in the remote regions of Mindanao, the privilege of founding
colleges, they had to apply to the City of Manila for subsidies. That is why the college which began to function
in the year 1865, was called the Ateneo Municipal.

Since Mercado, the first surname of the family had come under
suspicion of the authorities because it was the name used by
Paciano when he was studying and working with Father Burgos, in
whose house he lived, Jose adopted the second surname, Rizal.

Rizal enters Ateneo. Father Margin Fernando, the College

registrar refused to admit Jose Rizal because: a) he was late for
registration; 2) he was sickly and undersized for his age. Because
of the help of Manuel Xeres Burgos (nephew of Fr. Burgos), Rizal
was admitted to the Ateneo. he first teacher of Rizal in Ateneo was
Father Jose Bech. He had two teachers he could not forget.

They were Francisco de Paula Sanchez, a young, upright, serious, and one who rejoiced at the
advancement of his students. On the contrary, Fr. Jose Vilaclara, a teacher in philosophy and sciences
found poetry useless. Trying to convince his students to follow what he firmly believed in, he discouraged
Rizal from writing.

Despite his resentment on the remarks of Fr. Vilaclara, Rizal did not allow criticisms to dampen his
fascination in literature. He continued writing and secretly sent his composition to Fr. Sanchez who likewise
corrected them enthusiastically.

Achievements of Rizal

Despite all the difficulties and discriminations Rizal had suffered, they did not prevent him from
his literary pursuits where he had shown his superior qualities as a Filipino over other races. 4

A la Juventud Filipina was Rizal’s winning entry in prose and poetry competition sponsored by Liceo Artistico-
Literario de Manila. This was the first time Filipinos were invited to participate in a competition dominated by
the Spaniards. Rizal, an indio (a name assigned to Filipinos then which signifies inferiority) bested them all. His
second major poetic achievement was Junto al Pasig, a zarzuela presented in seven scenes, during the

He was just in his 3rd year, yet but he and his brother Paciano decided that he had to leave the Philippines and
pursue his studies in Madrid. There were some reasons why he was hesitant to go at first, but finally, he left.
His mother was unjustly arrested and imprisoned; he was a suspect for being the leader of a “subversive”
organization Compañero de Jehu; he was prejudiced when he was not awarded first prize in a literary
competition; his family was subjected to persecution; Leonor Rivera’s parents did not approve his relationship
with him; he saw the oppression of the Filipinos by the colonizers; and, he had a mission to set the Filipinos
free (Seeds of Revolution, Daquila, pp.176-179).

Have you met a teacher always looking for her students whether their physical and mental
health is good? It is awesome to have teacher like that who`s loving and caring for their students, and she
was one of the persons who visited me in the hospital when I have a severe dengue. That teacher is very
educated enough and she make her lessons more understandable so that the students would really learn.
She always sermon`s us to be a good student in a way that she experienced life lessons that she
encountered. I would say that as a student, I am lucky that I experienced to have an adviser like her.

Have you met a teacher that has this favoritism? A teacher who always scolding students
when he doesn’t have done bad things? well I experienced to have a teacher like that who is always
scolding at me and blaming me for the noisiness of my classmates. Since she was always looking at my
bad deeds but not the good ones. She always scolds me in some days when I was asking my classmates in
such a low voice. That teacher has always made my day unmotivated and always made my day filled with
angriness.

To the Filipino Youth Sweeter than nectar and ambrosia;

You of the celestial accent,

Melodious rival of the nightingale,

Raise your unruffled brow
Who with varied melodies
On this day, Filipino youth!
Dissipate the mortal’s bitter pain

Your courage rich,
You who animate the hand rock
Handsome hope of my motherland!
With the impulse of your mind,

And with prepotent hand makes eternal

Of the refulgent genius;
More rapid than the wind,
And you, who with magic brushes
Its virgin mind to the glorious goal.

Descend to the arena
