 Palate
Roof of the oral cavity , it is the partition intervening between
oral cavity (below) and nasal cavity (above), it formed from :
1.Hard palate (anteriorly).
2.Soft palate (posteriorly).

 Hard palate : bone part of palate (anterior part of norma
basalis externa), separated between oral and nasal cavity it
formed from :
1. Palatine process of maxilla : the anterior ¾ of hard palate .
2.Horzintal palate of palatine bone : the posterior ¼ of hard
palate .
3.Posterior nasal spine .

Bounders of hard palate :
• Anterolaterally by alveolar process of maxilla carrying
teeth.
• Posterior boarded of hard palate (posterior nasal spine)
continuous with soft palate .
• Incisive foramen (nesopalatine nerve and greaterpalatine
vessels)

Mucosa of hard palate consist from :
1.Median raphe : palatine raphe :‫يتكون الغشاء املخاطي للحنك الصلب من‬
‫ الرفاء الحنكي‬:‫ الرفاء املتوسط‬.1
2.Transverce fold : palatine rugae ‫ حنكي الراجي‬:‫ الثنية العرضية‬.2
 Blood supply :
• Greater palatine artery : from 3 rd. part of maxillary artery to hard
palate and give lesser palatine artery to soft palate .
• Venous drainage : drain into pterygoid venous plexuses .

Nerve supply :
• Nasopalatine nerve to anterior part .
• Greater palatine nerve to posterior part.
• Lesser palatine nerve to soft palate .

Soft palate :
Muscular and movable part of the palate, extend from the posterior
border of hard palate separating the nasopharynx from oropharynx, it
have:
2 border : anterior (superior) and posterior (inferior).
2 surface : oral and nasal surface.
2 arches : palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal.

Anterior border : attached to posterior border of hard palate .
Posterior border : free and have uvula (center of posterior border).
Oral surface (concave‫ )مقعر‬: roof of oropharynx .
Nasal surface (convex ‫ )محدب‬: floor of nasopharynx .
Palatoglossal arch: soft palate to side of tongue .
Palatopharyngeal arch: soft palate to pharynx .

Muscle of soft palate :
Tensor palati :
Origin from scaphoid fossa and cartilage of auditory
tube, insertion around pterygoid hamulus to form
palatine aponeurosis which attached to posterior
border of hard palate, action tension of soft palate ,
depression of palate during deglutition and open the
auditory tube.
2.Elevator palati :
Origin from auditory tube and petrous part of
temporal bone, insertion in palatine aponeurosis,
action elevation of soft palate upward and backward
during deglutition to close nasopharynx ,also open the
auditory tube.

‫انخفاض الحنك أثناء االنحالل وفتح‬

‫أصل من األنبوب السمعي والجزء الصخري من‬
، ‫ اإلدراج في صفاق الحنك‬، ‫العظم الصدغي‬
‫رفع الحنك الرخو إلى أعلى وإلى الوراء‬

3.Palatopharyngeal :
Origin from upper border of palatine aponeurosis,
insertion posterior border of thyroid cartilage and
pharynx, action elevation of the pharynx and larynx to
close laryngeal inlet during deglutition .
4.Palatoglossal :
Origin from lower border of palatine aponeurosis,
insertion side of tongue, action elevation of posterior
part of tongue ,depression of soft palate and closure of
oropharyngeal isthmus .

4- Palatoglossal:

‫ وانخفاض الحنك الرخو وانغالق‬، ‫جزء من اللسان‬
‫البرزخ الفموي البلعومي‬

5. Muscle uvula : ‫عمل ارتفاع وانكماش اللهاة‬

Origin from posterior nasal spine , insertion uvula ,

action elevation and retraction of uvula .
• Nerve supply :
All muscle by vagus and accessory (vago-accessory
nerve) except tensor palati by mandibular nerve .
General sensation to soft palate by lesser palatine
nerve.
Taste sensation to soft palate by greater petrosal nerve.

• Artery supply :
Lesser palatine artery from greater palatine artery from
3 rd. part of maxillary a.
Ascending palatine artery from facial artery .
Ascending pharyngeal artery from external carotid a.
