The scope of the study is an integral element in any
research paper. It identifies to what extend the
research area would be. Furthermore, it provides
parameters that researchers will be operating in.

Delimitation of the study provides the boundaries of

the study. These include the sample size,
geographical location, population, and more.

Guidelines on How to Write Scope and

Delimitation
1. Why – the general aims and objectives (purpose)
of the research.
2. What – the subject to be investigated, and the
included variables.
3. Where – the location or setting of the study, i.e.
where the data will be gathered and to which entity
the data will belong.
4. When – the timeframe within which the data is to
be collected.
5. Who – the subject matter of the study and the
population from which they will be selected. This
population needs to be large enough to be able to
make generalisations.
6. How – how the research is to be conducted,
including a description of the research design (e.g.
whether it is experimental research, qualitative
research or a case study), methodology, research tools
and analysis techniques.
IV. APPLICATION

V. GENERALIZATION
1. What is a scope and delimitation of the study?
2. Differentiate limitation from delimitation.
3. What are the guidelines in writing a scope and
delimitation of the study?
Valuing
Why is it important to have a scope and delimitation
in a research or study?
VI. EVALUATION
The students will write a draft of their research scope
and delimitation.
