Sidlak Summer Reading Camp Best Practices

1. Teachers are scheduled daily to have an opening storytelling act to capture the
learner’s interest.

2. Students are required to have a DIY Story as a writing activity output every Friday to
help to develop their imagination by introducing new ideas into their world.

3. Students are encouraged to do chain storytelling once in week to promote

collaboration and improve their speaking skills.

4. Dramatization is required as a group activity performance task to learners so that

they can extend their constructive and creative thinking. With this, students can
express and articulate their feelings and understandings in their own unique ways
and it gives them practice in reasoning and acknowledging.

5. Every Tuesdays and Wednesdays, learners are given stories according to their
reading level to enhance reading comprehension and to be assessed by the teacher.

Power of Storytelling: Teacher Dawn tells an adventure story as an opening act for the Sidlak
Summer Reading Camp. Storytelling is a powerful tool to capture the learner's interest. Where
learners are increasingly difficult to captivate, storytelling is one of the best practices that becomes a
powerful tool to encourage learners to read.

Chain Storytelling: Junior students add a

different segment or part to a story. Chain stories
are a great way to encourage learning through
cooperation. As they practice their English
conversational abilities, it helps students listen,
interact, and collaborate with one another.

Drama for the Win!: Senior High School Students dramatized a short skit as part of a performance
task. The most important model and fundamental learning activity is dramatization. It encourages
students to ponder their own or societal problems. Through drama or role play, learners can learn to
explore themes, events, and relationships.
