1. AIM

The aim of this document is to provide a description of the Service Water System for Al Dur
II Project, to be erected by SEPCOIII in Bahrain.

This document defines purpose, characteristic, control and protection philosophy for the
above-mentioned system.

In addition to the service water system, this document also covers the filling system of the
firefighting water tanks as this uses the same water quality from the desalination plant.

2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

2.1. MAIN FUNCTIONS

The main function of service water system is to store and supply service water to the
following consumers:

 Domestic water: toilets and showers

 Emergency showers and eye-washes

 Water hose connections for cleaning and maintenance purpose

 HVAC (for humidifiers)

 Other consumers (scrubbers in dosing systems, backwashing in oil separator, HRSG

blowdown drain pit for initial filling, etc.).

The service water system covers demand for potable water and industrial service water for
the power plant.

Service water is received from the desalination plant (through the terminal point). From
terminal point, filling line is routed to potable/service water tanks. Then it will be distributed
by service water distribution pumps to the following customers:

 Domestic water purpose (plumbing)

2.2. DESCRIPTION

The service water system includes the following equipment to store and supply service
water to the consumers mentioned in previous section:

 2 x 50% potable/service water tanks

 2 x 100% service water distribution pumps

 Hydropneumatic tank

 Distribution system

Water is received in the tanks from desalination plant (potable water quality) by an
automatic filling system based on level in the tank.

From the tank, water is distributed by the service water distribution pumps to all the
consumers. Pumps are protected by dedicated strainer provided with differential pressure
transmitters for monitoring.

In the discharge header, an hydropneumatic tank is provided to reduce the start-stop cycles
of the pumps and to avoid the need to have the pumps running continuously.

4. OPERATION CONCEPT

4.1. NORMAL OPERATION

Service/potable water is a basic service required in several areas of the plant for domestic
use, emergency showers, maintenance, HVAC and other uses. Therefore this system must
be continuously operating.

In normal operation the status of the main equipment and components will be as follows:

 Both service/water tanks will be operating, maintaining the stock of water in the tanks
through the automatic filling system (water provided from desalination plant)

 One pump will be starting and stopping depending on the pressure of the distribution
header.

 Hydropneumatic tank will maintain the pressure in the system when the pump stops,
and will provide some water for small demands until the pressure reduces and the
pumps starts again.

4.2. START-UP

For the start up of this system, the following conditions are required:

 Electrical and control systems are operating/available

 Piping distribution system is full of water and air is properly vented from all high
points.

Startup of this system is done automatically and is summarized in the following events:

 Tank filling valves are put in auto to maintain the tanks full (this requires the
desalination plant to be in operation).

 One service/potable water pump is put in auto to start/stop depending on header

pressure.

4.3. SHUTDOWN

The shutdown of this system should be done only after all systems are shutdown as this
system provides service/potable water through all the plant.

The shutdown of the system is done automatically and is summarized in the following
events:

 Running pump is stopped

 Control and on-off valves are positioned in initial/default position

5.2.3. Service water distribution pumps (00GHE21/22AP001)

Service water distribution pressure group is composed by 2X100% horizontal centrifugal

pumps with manual isolation valves, a filter located at the suction, manometer at the suction
and at the discharge, check valves and a small buffer tank.

There are 2 x 100% service water distribution pumps. Normally, one pump is starts and
stops based on the pressure in the distribution header and the other pump is in standby (for
automatic start in case the lead pump fails).

The pump starts on low pressure and stops on high pressure.

In case of very high pressure or very low pressure in the distribution header, the pump is
tripped as this may be indicative of some problems with the running pump.
