MODULE CONTENT
PROPAGANDA

Propaganda is the use of a variety of techniques that create an emotional appeal to accept a particular belief
or opinion, to adopt a certain behavior or to perform a particular action.

PROPAGANDA TECHNIQUES

Bandwagon

Bandwagon propaganda is all about persuading the target audience to take action. It’s about
creating an urge amongst people to become a part of the “in crowd”.
Testimonial
It uses a famous person to recommend a product or idea.
Transfer
Transfer is a technique used in propaganda and advertising. Also known as association, this is a
technique of projecting positive or negative qualities (praise or blame) of a person, entity, object, or
value (an individual, group, organization, nation, patriotism, etc.) to another to make the second more
acceptable or to discredit it.
Emotional Words
It uses words that will make the reader feel strongly about someone or something.
Card Stacking
Manipulating or withholding relevant information about a product, person, or idea.
Glittering Generalities
It occurs very often in politics and political propaganda. Glittering generalities are words that have
positive meaning for people.
Plain Folks
A method used to convince the public that a person’s views reflect those of the common person
and that they are also working for the benefit of the common person.
Name Calling
It is the use of derogatory language or words that carry a negative connotation when describing an
enemy.
Stereotyping
This method often reduces a complex situation to a clear-cut choice involving good and evil.
Assertion
An enthusiastic or energetic statement presented as a fact, although it is not necessarily true.
MODALS
A modal is a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used to express: ability, possibility, permission or
obligation. Modal phrases (or semi-modals) are used to express the same things as modals but are a
combination of auxiliary verbs and the preposition to .

must – deduction, necessity, obligation, prohibition
shall – decision, future, offer, question, suggestion

would – conditional, habit, invitation, permission, preference, request, question, suggestion

INDONESIAN LITERATURE

Indonesian literature is a term grouping various genres of South-East Asian literature. Indonesian literature can
refer to literature produced in the Indonesian archipelago.

ISLAND SOUTHEAST ASIA. It is archipelago group that lies south of the Philippines. It is composed of
Indonesia (the largest archipelago in the world), Sabah, Borneo, and Malaysia.
The early literature of Indonesia had a clearly religious function.

The spirit of Javanese poetry, drama, music, and dance is close to the Indian. The Ramayana and
Mahabharata have virtually influenced the development of these fine arts, furnishing subject matter to them.

Pantum- consists of four lines written in a romantic vein, the first rhyming with the third and the second
with the fourth.

In the modern literature, Malay and Bahasa Indonesian poets were influenced by the Westerners,
particularly by the Dutch.
