I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

There are several processes in the body that are coordinated by hormones which regulate and balance the working of
organs, tissues, and cells. The endocrine system influences how your heart beats, how your bones and tissues develop, and even your
capacity to have a baby. It plays an essential role in the occurrence of disorders such as diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders,
and/or sexual dysfunction.

All bodies experience hormonal shifts constantly throughout the day.

II. LEARNING SKILLS

MELC: Explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male reproductive systems. (S10LTIIIb-34)

Objectives:
1. Explain the roles of hormones in regulating metabolism, growth and other body process.
2. Identify the effects of hormones in the body.
3. Describe the hormonal regulation of the male and female reproductive system.

III. ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY
Activity 1: Direction: Read the situation below.

High school education is challenging, especially in your subject Technical and Livelihood Education (TLE)- Baking. All of you
are required to make a recipe of an ube halaya with pili nut muffin. This is a part of performance task in the subject.

You are required to present the whole process including the ingredients, procedures, product, and allows you to taste the
product of the other.
The muffin you made is quietly different among the products presented. Its appearance is not uniformly purple in color, with big
holes and yeasty

Activity 2- Direction: Identify which gland in the endocrine system is involved in each dysfunction and explain the effect of hormonal
imbalance observed.

A. _________________________
Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone is produced and secreted by specialized
nerve cells in the hypothalamus of the brain. _________________________ It is released into tiny blood vessels that carry this
hormone from the brain to the pituitary gland, _______________ where it stimulates the production of two more hormones –
follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. These hormones are released into the general circulation and act on the testes
and ovaries to initiate and maintain their reproductive functions. Follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone control the levels
of hormones produced by the testes and ovaries (such as testosterone, oestradiol and progesterone), and are important in controlling
the production of sperm in men and the maturation and release of an egg during each menstrual cycle in women.

B.
Hypothalamus is the brain regulatory center for maintaining homeostasis receiving nerve signals. It gives direction to the
pituitary gland. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) – are hormones that are secreted by the hypothalamus stimulating the
pituitary gland to release two hormones namely luteinizing hormone (LH) and the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). LH stimulates
gonads to produce sex hormones and the release of the egg cell from the female ovary. FSH stimulates the sex organs to produce
gametes or sex cells. Hypothalamus and pituitary gland affect the male and female reproductive system to secrete sex hormones
controlling the sex characteristics. Estrogen is the primary female sex hormone that stimulates sex drive and progesterone a hormone
released by luteum in the ovary. It plays vital roles in the menstrual cycle and maintaining the stages of pregnancy. It regulates and
maintains homeostasis and controls the growth of and release of eggs from the ovaries and it helps prepare the uterus so the baby can
grow in it.

B. Analysis
I. Direction: Based on the situation in activity 1A. answer the following questions:
1. Do you think you made it right to make a muffin?
2. How is measuring the ingredients important in baking?
3. How is making a muffin related to daily lifestyle?

II. Based from Activity 2

1. What condition may arise if the pituitary gland is not producing enough growth hormones?
2. What will happen to a person with excessive secretion of growth hormones from the pituitary gland?
3. Why is there a noticeable swelling in the front part of the neck of a person who has goiter?
4. How does using iodized salt help in preventing thyroid problems?
5. How does the medical condition of a person with endocrine dysfunction affect his or her way of life?

III. Based on activity 3

A.
1. What are the hormones involved in the male reproductive system?
2. What is the role of the brain (hypothalamus) in the reproductive system?
3. What does pituitary gland produce?
4. What produces sex hormone?
5. Explain the role of hormones in the male reproductive system.
B.
1. What are the hormones involved in the female reproductive system?
2. What is the role of the brain (hypothalamus) in the reproductive system?
3. What does pituitary gland produce?
4. What produces sex hormone?
5. Explain the role of hormones in the female reproductive system.

C. Abstraction
Effects of Hormones in the Body

Several processes in the body are coordinated by hormones which regulate and balance the working of organs, tissues, and
cells. The endocrine system influences how your heart beats, how your bones and tissues develop, and even your capacity to have a
baby. It plays an essential role in the occurrence of disorders such as diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders, and/or sexual
dysfunction.

Both men and women produce hormones in the same areas with one exception, the reproductive glands. Additional male
hormones are produced in the testes while female hormones are produced in the ovaries.

Some hormones have short-term effects while other hormones have long-term effects such as those that control our growth
and the changes at the onset of puberty. During puberty, there are many hormonal changes that happen in your body. One moment
you laugh, and then suddenly you feel like crying. Sudden mood swings are relatively caused by the increasing amount of hormones in
the body at this stage. It is therefore important to maintain a positive outlook in life and remember that these changes are only
temporary and will stabilize with time.

Hormones act in very small amounts. If the organ and hormones do not produce the regulated amount of chemicals to your
body, it may result in an abnormality of your body. This condition is called hormonal imbalance. An increase or decrease in its amount
may have a significant effect in the human body.

Hormones affect various processes in the body as they regulate and balance the
functioning of organs, tissues, and cells. Hormones have great impact on your growth, appearance, emotions, and reproductive
functions. These determine whether or not you develop disorders such as diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders, or sexual
dysfunction. Hormones act in very small amounts. An increase or decrease in hormonal levels may result in body disorder due to
hormonal imbalance

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

The male reproductive system has the following functions:
1. To produce, maintain, transport and nourish sperm (the male reproductive cells), and protective fluid (semen)
2. To discharge sperm within the female reproductive tract.
3. To nurture the developing offspring.

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

The female reproductive system has the following functions:
1. Produces female sex cells
2. Receives sperm cells from the male
3. Nurtures the development of and provides nourishment for the new individual.

D. Application
1. Hormones are chemical substances that affect the activity of another part. How important the role of hormones in daily
healthy living?
2. With the changes happening both in male and female, cite 5 ways on how to take care of your reproductive system.
