A. Preparatory Activity
Good morning Grade 4! Again, I am teacher Ronna and I will be your
Mathematics teacher for today.
1. Drill
Before we start, let us sing first the song entitled I love MATH.
M A T H2x
I love Math2x
It is so exciting
Very interesting
I love Math2x
2. Review
Yesterday, you have discussed with teacher Mariefe the place value up to
100 000. Now, I want you to identify the place value of the digit 4 in the following
numbers.
1. 189 456 4. 348 099
2. 439 205 5. 130 547
3. 914 679
3. Motivation
I am going to show you a video, listen and watch carefully.
https://youtu.be/pNfz-JU2cKE
What was the video all about?
That’s right, it’s all about rounding off numbers.
B. Developmental Activity
1. Presentation of the lesson
Today, we are going to discuss about rounding off 6-digit number.
a. Setting of standard
But before that what should be a very good student do if someone is
talking in front?
Listen to your teacher.
Participate and cooperate during the activities.
Respect your teacher and classmates.
Can I expect all of these from you?
2. Discussion of Examples
Students Medes, Fibo, Polya, Ronkee, and Rennee joined a video making
contest on how to save the mother earth. The students with views close to
100 000 won a free registration on a 5-kilometer fun run, and those with
close to 200 000 views won free registration on 10 kilometer fun run.
The following table shows the number of views each of them got after
uploading their online entries.
Who among the students won a free registration on a 5-kilometer fun run?
First, we have to recall the rules in rounding off numbers to determine who
won the free registrations. Rounding off numbers to the nearest hundred
thousand is similar to rounding off numbers to the nearest ten thousand,
thousand, hundred, or ten.
To round off numbers we have to follow the following steps:
1. Find the value you want (the “rounding digit”) and look to the digit just to
the right of it.
2. If that digit is less than 5, do not change the “rounding digit” but change
all digit to the right of the rounding digit to zero.
3. If the digit is greater than or equal to 5, add to the “rounding digit” and
change all digits to the right of the “rounding digit” to zero.
Examples:
645 578 = 600 000 Rounded down = the number
become smaller)
496 810 =500 000
Rounded up = the number
become bigger
