BACKHOE (REAR ACTOR OR BACK ACTOR)
TURNER CONSTRUCTION
1. INTRODUCTION - A backhoe is an excavation machine comprised of a standard
tractor base that supports a digging bucket on the end of a jointed two-part arm. The
opposite side of the backhoe will have a front loader. The part of the backhoe arm
that’s attached to the tractor is called the boom, and the segment that holds the digger
bucket is called the dipper or dipper-stick.
• Backhoe consists of
• Buckets with thumbs

• Hammers

• Couplers

• Compactors

• Rippers

• Brooms and street sweepers

• Snowplows and snow pushes

• Augers

2. APPLICATIONS –
a. Digging up a trench - For digging purpose, the backhoes have a bucket
attached at one end of it.
b. Leveling the road
c. Cleaning up a Construction Site
d. Can also be used in excavation
e. Mining
3. PRICE RANGE - 26,00,000 RS To 40,00,000 RS based on different models
- Hiring cost can be 90,000 per month
4. TYPES –
a. Crawler Backhoe
b. Wheeled Backhoe
c. Dragline Backhoe
d. Suction Backhoe
e. Skid steer Backhoe
f. Long Reach Backhoe
g. Mini Backhoe
5. EFFICIENCY – (reference from https://constructionduniya.blogspot.com/ )
Ck – 90 (0.9 Cum Bucket)
Bucket = 0.9 Cum
Cycle Time in Plant = 35 Sec.
Efficiency = 80%
CAPACITY = (0.9 X 60 X 0.8X 60) /35 = 75 Cum / Hr.
6. WORKING METHOD –
• The key to the power of the backhoe is hydraulic pressure.
• Hydraulic lines, a reservoir of hydraulic fluid, a pump, and a series of pistons
allow the machine’s operator to extend its arm and cut through the soil with a
toothed bucket.
• The pump exerts pressure on the hydraulic fluid, and operating the levers
opens a valve that releases the oil into a piston.
• The piston expands to lift the arm, swing the bucket, press the bucket into the
soil, and lift it out of the excavation.
• Reversing the valve causes the oil to flow out of the piston and return to the
reservoir.

7. INSTRUCTION WHILE OPERATNG –

• Always wear a seatbelt
• Never operate the equipment without having the stabilizers down
• Never exceed the maximum operating weight of the machine
• When moving loads, travel with loads low and close to the ground
• Be mindful of visibility when moving loads or material
• Always check blind spots before moving
• Never use a bucket to lift or carry people
• Driving speeds on-site should stay around 5 mph (approximately 8 kph)
