Introduction to Media, Information, and Technology Literacy
Pre-Assessment
Main Activity:
Read the questions and answer them based on your understanding.
Communication is done through different and unique ways. It is commonly done verbally
wherein we transmit messages through words. It can also be done non-verbally through
our facial expressions, gestures, proximity, etc. Silence is also a form of communication.
There are also other creative methods of expressing oneself such as art and music.
Try to define the following words based on how you use them in your daily lives.
• Media – Media involves all outlets and platforms that are utilized to disseminate a
wide range of information. This includes radio, newspaper, magazine, television,
internet, etc.
• Information - Information is anything that is given to a recipient in order to explain,
inform, or verify that they may use it for any specific purpose. It can take the shape
of facts, statistics, numbers, photos, papers, sounds, or even a person's conduct. It
is obtained through different forms of communication.
• Technology - Technology is the field of study that examines the development,
application, and interaction of technological tools with human existence, society,
and the environment. It applies knowledge for practical purposes.
• Literacy – Literacy refers to the knowledge and understanding in a deeper context
of a specific field. It involves competence in a subject where one can understand,
interpret, analyze, and solve problems.
On the table below, identify all the media problems the society is facing right now. One
the first column, write down the problem, on the second column, write down the
description explaining as to why this is a problem, and on the last column, attempt to
give a solution to this problem.
Through the diagrams shown above, it can be seen that Lasswell’s Communication
Model has a more simple and linear approach in explaining the process of
communication. It simply recognizes the communicator as the one that sends the
message to the receiver through a specific medium, gaining an effect. Shannon-
Weaver’s Communication Model, on the other hand, embraces the complexity of the
communication process as it acknowledges two important factors of communication:
noise and feedback. Noise refers to anything that disrupts the speaker-audience
communication process. In relation to this, feedback addresses the interference to
ensure that the message is delivered effectively.
