according to purpose.

First is Informative speech, to inform, to

educate and to explain process, example
of this are oral reports, instructions and
demonstrations.
Second is Entertainment Speech which is
designed to bring out laughter. Best
example of this are the humorous
speeches of comedians and performers.
Third is Persuasive Speech that seeks to
convince and influence the audience,
examples are advertisements and political
campaigns.

from the speaker’s manner of delivery.

There are four (4) commonly known types

of speeches according to delivery.

type of speeches)

This is a speech where the development of

both ideas and language is thought only at
the moment of delivery. It is an
unrehearsed speech without advanced
preparation.

Do not be confused between

Extemporaneous and Impromptu.
Extemporaneous speech is delivered with
preparation and outlined notes while
Impromptu is delivered without prior
preparation and without notes.

Third is Manuscript Reading. Speech that

is written out and read word for word
during delivery.

Fourth is Memorized. A speech committed

entirely to memory and delivered from
memory.

concepts and
practicing new (Video of Dananjaya Hettiarchchi of Sri

I. Finding practical
applications of You may have noticed that aside from the
concepts and skills speech content, the speaker’s delivery was
in daily living also essential to their victory. The speaker
seemed so natural and at ease that you
wonder:
Are effective speakers made, or are they
naturally born effective speakers?

It is true that some people are born with

special gifts in public speaking, but it is
also true that most of the best public
speakers either underwent intensive formal
training or got involved in several speaking
situations that over time, enabled them to
hone the skill.

Take note that in public speaking, effective

delivery shows your audience that you
have researched your topic and
understand what you are speaking about.
Delivery communicates your confidence
and preparedness.

Here are the following principles that will

guide you to improve your speech delivery.

Number 1. Articulation. This refers to the

speaker’s skill in pronouncing the words
and speaking with clear diction. This
involves proper production of sounds,
breathing, pausing and phrasing.

Here’s a clip of Inka Magnaye, a

professional voice talent, and observe how
her articulation goes.

Video of Inka Magnaye on Philippine

Airline’s welcome tag.

Did you enjoy listening to her? She does

not only articulate very well, but she also
speaks with very good modulation which
talks about the principle number 2.
Modulation is the ability of the speaker to
produce pleasant-sounding voice, soothing
to the ear that helps the audience clearly
hear and understand the speech being
delivered.

Like Inka, for you to achieve good

articulation and modulation, remember to:
(flash on the screen)
- Check your speed
- Utter words properly with
correct stress and pauses
- Speak loud enough
- Avoid muttering and
mumbling.

Third principle is Stage Presence. This

is your capability and ability as the speaker
to command and connect powerfully and
realistically with an impressive manner.

- Start your speech by standing

straight and balancing your
weight, this will give a positive
impression
- Dress properly and
appropriately; wearing the
right attire will make you look
more confident and
professional. Make sure to not
overdress as this will distract
your audience.

Number 4 principle includes Facial

Expressions, Gestures and movements.
Avoid having a poker face or a highly
animated face. These facial expressions
appear distracting and may even be
annoying. Instead, follow the most highly
suggested tip, smile. However, make sure
that the meaning of your speech reflects in
your facial expression.

Use precise movements. Avoid distracting

mannerisms like swaying back and forth,
leaning on the podium, licking or biting
your lips. Playing with your wrist watch or
jewelry, scratching part of your body,
frowning and others.

An effective speaker is someone who

establishes rapport or relationship and
connection with her audience. That’s why
we can’t disregard our 5th principle which
is Rapport with the audience.
Look at your audience in the eyes so they
will feel that they are part of your speech.
Eye contact should be maintained to keep
the attention of your audience and to
enhance your delivery. Use a
conversational style more often. This is a
style that is more natural.

Did you notice all these principles on

speech?

speech, what did you realize as your
weakness in delivering speeches? How
will you be able to overcome this?

(The teacher will process the answers of

the students)
K. Evaluating learning
Were you able to understand the different
types of speech and its principles of
delivery? I hope you do because it’s now
time for a short quiz. (Directions) Listen
and read each item carefully then choose
the letter that corresponds to your answer.
Write them down on a sheet of paper. Let’s
begin.

(A ten-item quiz will be given to the students)
