Activity I:

1. Original Learning Activity: For a review, students will complete a Google Forms
quiz on musical vocabulary. Students will listen to six one-minute clips of music that
represent six different moods (happy, sad, exciting, scary, calm, fun). Using
appropriate vocabulary, students will discuss why these pieces represent these moods.
If students think a different mood/emotion is more accurate, they may explain their
choices.

2. Applying TPACK: Instead of taking the vocab quiz in the traditional format, I will
have students work in pairs and complete the quiz collaboratively. The quiz will be
made using Quizizz, which will allow for a more interactive, gameified experience (as
opposed to Google Forms). Students will listen to the one-minute musical examples
(via YouTube) on the Nearpod lesson. Individually, students will create a one-page
comic using Storyboard That. The picture should represent the emotion/mood they
believe is being portrayed by the piece. Then using Screencastify, students will
present their comics and explain how the comic represents the emotion portrayed by
the piece.

3. Explanation of TPACK application based on your understanding of the following


questions:

-What digital tools are available to you?


Nearpod, Quizizz, Screencastify, Storyboard That, student Chromebooks

-Which tools do you know well enough to use, and which would be most
appropriate for the lesson at hand? I have used Nearpod fairly frequently, and I am
familiar with many of its available features. Nearpod is an excellent tool for compiling
many different resources in one location. Students can easily access all the necessary
resources without having to jump platforms. They also have enjoyed using Nearpod in
the past. Assessments with Quizizz have also been successful with my students. In
other classes, my students have used story-making as a learning tool, but they have
not used Storyboard That. This digital story-making tool will satisfy the need to learn
using 21st-century web tools, as well as encourage creativity in learning.
-How do your students learn best? My students enjoy working in pairs or in
teams. They also learn best when they are able to work with interactive tools; they
love being able to use their creativity and imagination.

-What instructional strategies do you need to meet their needs and the
requirements of the lesson plan? I will need to give a simple tutorial on how to create
a comic using Storyboard That, as this is a new program for them. Storyboard That is
also a new tool to me, but it was easy to figure out. This program is intuitive, and the
user interface is elementary friendly. Using Screencastify, I will record myself
creating a one-picture story while explaining step-by-step how to use the program.
Students will need a review of how to use Screencastify for their presentations. Since
we have used Screencastify, there will not need to be a lot of time spent on this.
Students are already familiar with Nearpod, Quizizz, and the school-provided
Chromebooks, so there is no need for a review of these tools.

-How do your chosen technology tools help your students learn best? I wanted
to introduce new technology learning tools without overwhelming my students. By
using familiar tools and introducing only one new tool, the students will feel more
confident, and will be able to learn more effectively. Also, while Storyboard That will
be new to them, drawing activities will not be unfamiliar; the students use this
technique in other classes.

-In what ways do you think your chosen technology tools will help you
effectively deliver your lessons?
Using Nearpod as the main platform is a convenient way to make all the
materials accessible. I can keep all assessments and videos in one place using a tool
that my students are familiar and comfortable with. Storyboard That also has a teacher
dashboard so I can see my students’ work.

Activity 2:

Original Learning Activity: Students will learn about folk instruments around the
world using a Nearpod presentation and activities. Students will create a slideshow
presentation on their chosen country’s music and culture.
Applying TPACK: Instead of students creating a traditional slideshow presentation
using PowerPoint or another similar program, I will have students use ThingLink to
create an interactive presentation on the music and culture of their chosen country.
The presentations can be accessed by all students, and they will be able to view and
interact with each other's presentations. Additionally, I will ask each student to submit
one question to me based on their presentation (i.e. Which country does the
didgeridoo come from?). I will gather the questions from each student and create a
Jeopardy-style trivia game to be played using Screencastify. Once we have played the
game as a class, I will upload the game to our Google Classroom so students can
access it after the activity.

-Which tools do you know well enough to use, and which would be most
appropriate for the lesson at hand? I am familiar with Nearpod, and I have used
ThingLink in the past. I haven’t used ThingLink as much as Nearpod however, so I
will have a quick review before teaching my students how to use it.

-How do your students learn best? My students enjoy working in pairs or in


teams. They also learn best when they are able to work with interactive tools; they
love being able to use their creativity and imagination.

-What instructional strategies do you need to meet their needs and the
requirements of the lesson plan? My students have never used ThingLink, and will
need a basic tutorial. Since students have been using Nearpod, adding one new
program to their toolshed should not be too overwhelming.

-How do your chosen technology tools help your students learn best? Since my
students enjoy learning with interactive tools, ThingLink will be an excellent choice
for them. My students also like to show their creativity. Using a Web 2.0 tool like
ThingLink will encourage this more than just making a standard PowerPoint
presentation.
