Lesson
Class #: Tuesday Sept 20 Course Bio 20
Title/Focus

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

SLOs
 Explain and summarize cycling of water, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus and relate to reuse of all
matter in the biosphere (k2.1)
 Work as members of a team and apply the skills and conventions of science

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Explain to each other what they learned about each cycle in their expert groups
2. Explain the role of biochemical cycles in matter exchange
3. Describe water cycle
4. Describe carbon cycle
5. Describe nitrogen cycle
6. Describe phosphorus cycle
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
 Textbook
 Poster paper
 Phone or computer for research
 Powerpoint
 Video
PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
 Textbook
 Poster paper
 Phone or computer for research
 Powerpoint
 Divide students in groups and organize into expert groups
PROCEDURE
Introduction Time

 Science in news, number of ants on earth. ecological pyramid of numbers and biomass.
 Teacher will explain that today we will do a jigsaw puzzle activity where you will
initially be placed into home group.
 Teacher assigns groups randomly and provides activity instructions.
o One member of home group will be assigned a specific biochemical cycle to
research.
5-10 min
o Then, students who have been assigned the same cycle will become an expert
group (everyone in group researching the same cycle).
o Expert groups will have 30 min to learn as much as possible about their
assigned biochemical cycle and inscribe their knowledge on posters.
o Then, experts will go back to their home groups and teach their group members
about their cycle.
 Teacher will assign groups randomly and provide activity instructions.

Conclusion Time
 The chapter 3 is all about cycling of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus in
the biosphere.
 Teacher shows a video on biochemical cycles as a review to the lesson.. and

introduction to Wednesday’s water cycle lesson
 Tomorrow we will learn about the water cycle and then the rest of the cycles
toward the end of the week.
