Pitching a Brilliant Idea
How to pitch a brilliant idea
Catchers
One buying the idea
How to pitch a brilliant idea
Persons involved in the pitching process:
Catchers
have no formal, verifiable, or objective
measures for assessing that elusive trait,
creativity
apply a set of subjective and often inaccurate
criteria very early in the encounter
respond well if they are made to feel that they
are participating in an idea’s development
How to pitch a brilliant idea
Your audience is going to put you into a
box and they are going to do it really fast
Pitching as a team
Steps in creating a pitch
Test the pitch
Find smart people you know to give you feedback
Ask them to pretend they are whoever it is you plan to pitch to
Go through your pitch, respond to their questions
Develop a list of questions you expect to be asked during the pitch, and be prepared to answer them
Steps in creating a pitch
Deliver
Be calm, be direct, state your case, and then listen
The more often you do it, the more comfortable it will become
Understand your audience
Believe in what you are pitching
Steps in creating a pitch
What to do when the pitch fails
Always leave failed pitches with an understanding of what went wrong
Get as much learning out of completed pitches as you can
Consider compromising on how much power is needed to make your idea happen, or how to split your
idea into smaller ideas.
Focus on the first small piece of your larger idea, and revisit the rest after you’ve had some initial
success.
Steps in creating a pitch
Do it yourself
Business can be started on small business loans or second mortgages
There is always a way to do it if you are sufficiently compelled by your ideas to take on risks, and make
use of your own (unpaid) time.
“Don’t ever allow yourself to believe that there is only one way to make ideas real.”
