Regional Science High School

Journal #2
B.S.Ed. – Math major

November 07, 2022

When I arrived at Regional Science High School on November 7, 2022, all grade levels from 7 to 12
were already gathered in the court for the first day of the flag ceremony. All of us student teachers from
various programs are there to see the activities happening during the Flag Ceremony. Following the flag
ceremony, there was a brief programmed in which the principal announced the sections that had won the
Most Sustained and Most Improved awards. Fortunately, my advisory class came in third place for Most
sustained, and my cooperating teacher awarded a certificate of recognition for coming in third place for Most
sustained and for submitting the First Quarter Grades for School Year 2022~2023.

Most of the winners of major award are in Grade 10. We proceeded to Grade 10-Copper after the flag
ceremony. When we arrived, my cooperating teacher and I both congratulated the grade 10-Copper students.
Following the congrats, their teacher congratulated the entire section on winning the most sustained sections
award. Because this includes honorarium money, the entire section suggested organizing a little party on the
day of the PTA meeting and just raising the equivalent money to buy food. Because time is limited and their
teacher will be unable to provide a lesson for their first session in the second quarter, the students requested
to have a picture taking on the court.

I arrived to Grade 10 Platinum around 10:00 a.m. I was the first because my cooperating teacher had
delivered something to the Principal's office. When I walked in, I greeted everyone with a good morning, and
the students responded. I congratulated them on winning the Most Improved section after they sat down. I
also used that opportunity to introduce myself and get to know every one of them individually. Ma’am Aspiras
arrived at 10:10 a.m. and congratulated them on their achievement. Following that, she began presenting
their first lesson in the second quarter, Polynomial Functions. She stated the lesson's objective, and she then
discussed the difference between polynomial equations and polynomial functions, as well as the symbols
applied. After introducing Polynomial functions, she presented examples, and the learner solved each step-by-
step solution. There was a collaboration between the student and the teacher here. The students raised their
participation and recitation purely based on the examples provided by their teacher. After that Ma’am Aspiras
gave individual activities since we don't have enough time she just made assignments for the five activities she
gave.

In Grade 10-Gold and Silver, however, her strategy suddenly shifted.  She discusses the full lesson,
including the examples. Because of the limited time available to give the entire lesson, including the activities
she was doing, the recitation became less frequent. But when they perform the exercise, she only allows them
to collaborate so that they may better understand the entire lecture since they get diverse ideas from their
classmates while solving their tasks. I use some of my free time to check on my students' activities, seatwork,
and assignments. I noticed that the majority of them were still making mistakes in the sign, therefore their
scores in the activities decreased.

Reflection:
According to my observations, one of the most important and effective ways to make students like
their studies is to acknowledge what they are doing, no matter how small or large. This gives students more
confidence, trust, and a sense that their environment encourages the development of their abilities and that
their contribution is valued not only in academics but also in extracurricular activities. which they participate in

as a result, their morals develop to socialize in several school activities that will enhance their talents,
communication skills, and cognitive development.

November 09, 2022

On November 9, 2022, at 7:30 a.m., we went to the First Section in Grade 10 Copper. Our lesson
began with prayer, as is expected. Following the prayer, their teacher asked as to who was absent that day.
She asks also to pick-up some mess on the floor and arrange their chair. Following that, she announced the
results of their grades, stating that the results were good and that they all passed with honors. Following the
announcement, he reviewed their prior lesson on the Sum and Difference of a Perfect Square and the law of
signs. After that, because it is relevant to their upcoming new lesson.

Then she proceeded on to the main topic, Descartes' Rules. He offers examples of how to get the
variations in the given equations for each rule, and the students are the ones who provide the details needed
in their topics so that they can participate. They are interacting here so that her students might become
familiarized to analyzing an equation. She then limited herself to two examples as a class activity. Following
the class activity, he divided the students into pairs. Ma’am Aspiras proceeded over the activity's instructions
with them so they knew what they were doing. Even though they were a group, I noticed that they solved all
of the items individually, then compared if they had the same answer. If they did not, they had a sharing of
ideas so that his partner could learn the correct method of solving an equation step by step before finalizing
their answer on clean paper.

Ma’am Aspiras walks around throughout their group activity to assist students who need clarification on
their task. She also established a time limit for how long they would execute their activity. Ma’am Aspiras
passed their activity in front of me when the time was over, and I gathered all of their papers. For now, she
didn’t give an assignment for her students. She employed the same teaching tactics as in the following
section. However, it is uncontrollable that there will be students lying on the floor with their feet up and
walking during their activity.

However, because she will be attending the oath taking ceremony, she commanded me to watch the
Grade 10 Platinum, Gold, and Silver, but she provided a five problems solving equations to her students as
their activity to determine the variations, positive, negative, and imaginary roots, and to identify the possible
combinations of the roots. Every section that I watched had questions, thus you should always be prepared to
answer them. They're all focused on what they're doing, and no one is interrogating their colleagues. When
Ma’am Aspiras administered a quiz, their thoughts were already set that collaborating with classmates was
forbidden, but when it was seatwork, they were allowed to collaborate.

Reflection:

As a future teacher, one of the most effective ways to develop other characteristics of a young person's
ability and behavior is to let them explore everything and work where they are most comfortable. because it
allows all of their thoughts to come out even more if they are free and not constrained; as a result, they feel
more protected and have nothing to fear from doing what they believe is right. But there is limitation, as well
as the guidance of the teacher. Socializing with different individuals boosts your confidence in the face of
many real-life challenges. This improves our communication skills and strengthens our confidence.

Setting their minds to your regulations from the start is an excellent method to teach your students to
be professional and disciplined without becoming furious and shouting beforehand. A more productive
approach is to be friend them but with limitations, to communicate with them with humility, and to understand
each other's behavior so that you can figure out how to deal with each other.
