VOLLEYBALL

DEFINITION OF VOLLEYBALL
● A game for two teams, usually of six players, in which a large ball is hit by hand
over a high net, the aim being to score points by making the ball reach the
ground on the opponent's side of the court.

HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL

WILLIAM G. MORGAN
● He created a new game called “Mintonette”.
● Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, Physical Director of the
Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
● Designed the game to be a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and
handball with less body contact.

ALFRED HALSTEAD
● YMCA Secretarial Student
● Halstead renamed it Mintonette volleyball because the object of the game was to
volley a ball back and forth over a net.

VOLLEYBALL HISTORY

● In 1896 the first volleyball match was played at Springfield College.


● In 1900 a special ball was designed for volleyball.
● In 1920 the first volleyball court at the beach.
● In 1947 the Federation Internationale De Volleyball (FIVB), was founded.
● In 1949 the first FIVB World Championships were held in Prague,
Czechoslovakia.
● In 1964 volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Volleyball Court Dimension

● The first equipment required to play volleyball.


● 60 x 30 ft or 18 m x 9 m
➔ The length of the entire in-play area of the court. Each side of the court is
therefore 30 feet by 30 feet in size.
● Lines
➔ Painted in all white

Lines on the Court


● All lines are 5 cm wide. Must be of a light color which is different from the color of
the floor and from any other lines.

➢ SERVICE LINE - the area from which the server may serve the volleyball is
marked 10 feet inside the right sideline on each backline.
➢ CENTER LINE - is marked at the center of the court dividing it equally into 30
feet squares (9), above which the net is placed.
➢ ATTACK LINE - The Attack line, whose rear edge is drawn 3ms back from the
axis of the centerline marks the front zone.
➢ BOUNDARY LINE - Two sidelines and two end lines mark the playing court.
