Group the pupils. Show to the class a real hammer. Talk about it and encourage them
Let the pupils describe the use of common household materials to describe or say a word associated with hammer ( by definition,
found at home using the picture. description, uses of hammer, etc,)
(See Appendix 1) Synthesize/ summarize pupils’ responses.
You may say this:
A hammer is a hand tool which consists of a solid head held on
the end of a handle. It is used for beating, striking or pounding
materials/objects.
If solid materials are hammered, what do you think will happen to
the materials? What will happen to the size? What will happen to the
shape?
Show them other examples using a hammer to show that only the
physical appearance changes such as size and shape. Emphasize that
there is no new material being formed.
If you are going to use a hammer, in what way can you protect
your fingers from being hammered?

DT GW
Reporting of outputs. Group the pupils. (See Appendix 2)
Ask the leader in each group to report their output. Reporting of outputs. Let them synthesize their own understanding.
Ask the class the following questions as you discuss the lessons. They should be able to say/ understand that:
a. What are the useful materials found at home? Tell something Solid materials can be hammered depending on their composition.
about the use/s of each material. When hammered, these materials may change their size and shape, and
b. Which of these materials are common to you? Why? even the texture. However, no new material is formed because only the
c. What should you remember in using materials? physical appearance of the material is changed.
d. What should you do if you are not familiar with the material and
it’s uses?

questions.
3. Clarify misconceptions when needed.

a. What happened to the solid materials when cut?
b. Was there a new material formed after cutting the solid
material?
Have the pupils construct and express their own understanding. They
should be able to say/ understand that: (See Appendix 8)

Remember These:

 Solid materials can be cut. When cut, these materials may change their size and
shape, but no new material is formed. Hence, only the physical appearance of the
solid material is changed when cut.
 Not all solid materials can be cut using simple scissors. Some solid materials, like
iron, steel, etc., can be cut using sophisticated cutters (i.e. metal cutters/ machine
cutters).
