The Legend of Nyai Roro Kidul

Nyai Roro Kidul is the Indonesian Goddess of the Sea. The

beginning of her story is debated as any folktale is, but I
found one version of her story.

The Kingdom of Mataram in West Java was ruled by King

Siliwangi. His daughter named Dewi Kadita and his queen were
very beautiful, but the king’s harems were jealous of their
beauty. One night the harems cursed the queen and Dewi to be
filthy nad ugly using black magic. When the king saw his ugly
queen and daughter he was angry. The harmes told him that they
had a disease and would bring bad luck, so the king told the
queen and Dewi to leave the palace.

Dewi and her mother were distraught. Dewi was upset with her
father and became even more upset when her mother and her went
looking for shelter and no one welcomed them. Dewi’s mother
became depressed and passed away. Dewi walked with her sorrows
until she reached the shore of the Indian Ocean. She fell
asleep on the rocks and dreamed that to undo the curse she
would have to jump into the ocean. Dewi did just that when she
woke.

Dewi then turned beautiful again yet felt that she was no
longer human. After that she is known to rule all of the
creatures in the southern coasts of Java Island and is known as
Nyai Roro Kidul (also spelled Nyi Roro Kidul). Many people say
that she often trapped and swallowed men who were walking on
the shore as revenge to what her father did to her. It is
believed that her hatred of men will never end.
My Take on the Legend
My animation will focus on the main points of the version of the
legend with only a few changes. The changes will help tell the story
even better, but will have no effect on the culture and legend that I
am trying to portray.

Changes I will make:

❖ the harems will be servants to Dewi and the queen

❖ will take place when princes vying for Dewi’s hand in marriage
❖ will focus on the dream concept
❖ first scene will be a introduce the dream
❖ the black magic will be portrayed as poisoned makeup
❖ will be a focus on the transformation of beautiful to ugly
❖ narration and characters speaking will both be used
❖ cloaks will cover Dewi and her mother during the transformation

Scene 1: Beginning
(Night, moon full, on a windy cliff)
Narrator: What if your dream led you to become who you were always meant to be?
(woman wakes)
One woman’s dream
(running toward cliff)
told her to jump.
(jumps off cliff)
(goes black, title appears)

Scene 2: Dewi’s Room

(Morning, sun through the window in princess’ chambers)
(Ladies pulls open curtains)
(On bed Dewi opens her eyes)
Dewi: I had a dream last night.
Lady 1: Of what prince you will have tomorrow, my lady?
Dewi: No, I was running toward the moon and I…
(Dewi’s Mother bursts in)
Mother: Out ladies. Dewi, you should be up already! Your father is waiting for
us. You,(points to Lady 1 while the Ladies 2 and 3 are leaving) prepare her.
(Lady 1 looks resentful)

Scene 3:Throne Room
(Same day, in throne room sits Dewi’s father, the king)
(Dewi and her Mother walk in)
Father: My two beautiful ladies! As perfect as ever my queen. Dewi, the princes
will be blinded by your radiance tomorrow.
(continues speaking while Dewi get distracted by the sun)
They will all want to wed you! Of course Prince Bahadur has the most land and
wealth, but we of course must give the other a chance. Dewi?
(Dewi turns back)
Dewi: Yes, father?
Father: We will make a fine queen out of you yet.

Scene 4: In the Ruins

(Evening, the 3 Ladies are gathered around a fire)

Scene 5: The Makeup

(Morning of the Princes arrival, shows partly in the queen’s chamber and partly
in Dewi’s chamber, the black magic makeup turns them ugly and filthy)
