These are the exercises for Unit one. At the end of Unit One all the exercises should have been
done and written on your class book. The answers will be discussed in class. Remember to read
the questions carefully. Where ‘give your opinion’ or ‘explain with your own words’ is required,
it is exactly what you have to do. The answer to question 2 has to be written, recorded and
uploaded to the campus virtual before the given date.
1.- Watch the video'01. What is culture'. It is a short summary of what we saw in class in unit
one.
2.- Write your opinion about what you have seen, paying attention to the levels of culture.

Record your answer. (Title: Question two)

In my opinion I like this video because I think that it can explain in a good manner the way to
understand “What is culture?”
I totally agree with the phrase “Culture is us” because the culture is composed about all the
elements (visible and invisibles) that all the people of the world have.
The video says that we learn norms and values from our childhood, but I would add that not
only from our childhood, if not everything we learn over the years.

Regarding the levels of culture, I accept them, because as very well said at the beginning, the
Culture we are all, each one individually with their own culture and their learnings. And
that's why it is at the top of the pyramid at the beginning. The third level is the national
because we learn many behaviors from our nation and we choose that we want to learn and
we are agree with it.
And finally I totally agree with the last phrase of the video, that says "We see culture as a
collective, but people are individuals first”.

3.- Watch the video '02. The cultural Iceberg'. It is a development of Hall’s model of culture.
4.- Explain with your own words what you have seen in the video. Write your answers.

In the video I can see how one iceberg is similar to the concept of culture.
What we can physically see of the iceberg in the sea, compares it with the elements that we
can observe and experience easily using the five senses. This elements are for example, the

language, religion, dress, the food, rituals, customs, traditions, cultural institutions, manners
or arts.
The part that we do not see of the iceberg is related to elements that we do not see in culture
but that we can define with language. These elements are: beliefs, concepts, ideals, roles and
norms. When he talks about beliefs he is not referring to religion. The culture ideals refears the
things that are the bests for individuals and the society. The norms refer to the behaviors that
a person considered good for society has.
It also talks about values, tastes, attitudes, assumptions, and desires.

Finally, he talks about the elements that culture cannot control, for example, the climate,
the geography, demographics, media, communications, economics, technology

5.- Watch the video '03 Cultural Differences'. In it you can see a group of Senegalese people
travelling to the USA.
6.- The video shows what is called “culture clash”, that is, when one or more cultures are
integrated into one environment causing disruption and challenging contemporary traditions.
In the video, how is this culture clash shown? Which aspects of the American culture are
depicted as odd to the Africans? Write your answers.

The “Clash shown” is produced when four persons of Sudan travelled to The United States of
America and they experimented all the differents between those places.
First, before arriving in the United States, they said that they did not know what a bathroom
or shower was. And for that you can see before the trip that it was going to be hard for them.
They saw differences like a trash can and a bag of chips. They were also surprised to see food
in shop windows in the shopping centers.
One aspect of the video that seems very important to me, is that they say that people of USA

were so unfriendly. They said that people walked alone without talking to anyone on the
street. They said that people didn´t interact, and that people went to other people's houses
only if thet knew each other, and it was an aspect that they did not understand.

b.- Comment on the examples the teacher mentions about Russia

In Russia they believe that it's nice to present people with flowers. If is a festivication, for
example a birthday or a wedding party the number of flowers should be odd. And If is
something sad or tragic like a funeral the number of flowers should be even.

not the same.

9.- Watch the video '05 European Stereotypes 25 countries'.

10.- Choose two countries which are very well known and two countries which are not so

Very well known=

-UK: They are drinking beer whiskey and tea with milk, they stole land from Ireland, their
Food is crappy, they are ugly, they love football, they are lots of Pakistanis, weather is awful
Because of permanent fog and rain, lots of football hooligans. Opinion: I´m not agree when
say that the food is crappy and they are ugly. But I agree with the part of the football and
hooligans.

-Austria: Mostly Egoists, country known by Classical music and Mountain Resorts. Austrians
speak same language as Bavarians. Opinion: Well definition for the part of country known
by classical music and Mountain Resorts.
-Serbia: Resident evil, there are war Poverty Gypsies Muslims and Eurovision. They love
Russians and secretly wants to be part of Rusia. Third World. Opinion: I think that is not

residence evil, this are hard words. I agree with the part that they are third world.

11.- Watch the video '05 The Stereotypes song'. Try to sing it at the same time as the video
plays.
12.- What is your personal opinion about the stereotypes depicted on the song? Are they fair
or unfair? What are those stereotypes based on?

My personal opinion is that this song tries to be funny, and use the defects or characteristics
that the majority of people in a country can have. And he uses them as criticism towards

them to make others laugh.

I personally don't like this song because I don't like people being judged that way.
I think it is unfair. It is true that some things are kind of funny, but if the people of that
country heard this song, probably they will don't like it.

There are some stereotypes that are based on physical characteristics. Others are based on
their way of life, but in a derogatory way.

13.- See how stereotypes and prejudices are so immersed in our society. Watch ’06 Doll test’.
14.- Comment what you want on this video. Write your answers. Be prepared to comment
about the video in class.

In this video you can see how young children choose between a colored doll and another
white doll. When wondering about the physical appearance, that is, which is more beautiful

the vast majority always choose the white doll. The same happens when asking which is
better or which they prefer.
In most positive responses they point to the white doll.
As for my personal opinion, I think it is a great injustice for children to think this way from a
young age. I think that children have to be taught a good education. And teach them that
there are no good or bad, ugly or beautiful people. And less for being one skin color or
another.

Additional videos. These videos are a complement for the unit and should be viewed. Write
your opinions about these videos:
14.- ‘08 Understanding the difference between stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination’

My personal opinion about this video is that it explains very well the differences between
stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination, and it use a good examples of each one too.

No se permite la explotación económica ni la transformación de esta obra. Queda permitida la impresión en su totalidad.
How, for example, when talking about discrimination, use the example of racism, usually
because of the race of each person.
I also find it interesting when he talks about prejudice, and the use that people have of
prejudging others without knowing how they really are or having come to know them well.
I think that this is so truly. Even though is not a good action.

15.- ‘08 Sexism in Disney movies’

I totally agree with the video. Since we are little we have been taught that princesses have to
be beautiful, slim and have a good physical image. And that princes also have to be
handsome, tall and strong. Another example is also the stepmother who is always bad ugly
and tries to separate the parents from the children.
It is a very sad thing to see sexism in Disney but the truth is that we have all grown up with it
watching this movies.
