It is so nice to see everybody’s beautiful and

handsome faces present in this lovely morning.
And to start the day right, let us all rise to ask
our Almighty for his guidance in a short prayer
to be led by Rochelle.

(Rochelle prays)
Good morning, everyone. How are you doing?

Before you take your seats, stretch your hands

upward, now sideward, next downward and Good morning, Sir! We are fine sir.
then pick up the pieces of paper /litter under
your chair. Also, arrange your chair and be
seated.

Is everybody present in this wonderful

morning?

As we go on with our lesson for today may I

remind everyone that: Yes sir!

1. Do not talk when somebody is talking.

2. Listen carefully.
3. Raise your hand if you wish to ask question
or recite.
4. Respect everyone’s idea.
5. Enjoy as we go on with our lesson.

I hope everyone will be mindful and adhere to

these reminders.

May I present to you our learning objectives.

Yes Sir!
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

 define combination with repetition.

 solve problems involving combination
with repetition.
 relate combination with repetition to
real-life situations.

Are you ready class?

Yes sir!
1. Activity

(Present a picture of burger branch here in

Aparri)

Are you familiar with these places? When was

the last time you visit these places? What do
you usually order or buy in these different
stalls?
(Students’ answers may vary)
Who among you loves to eat burgers?
Me Sir!
What stall do you visit the most?
(Students’ answers may vary)

What kind of burger fillings do you love the

most? (Students’ answers may vary)

Have you ever tried to eat a burger tower?

(Students’ answers may vary)
How many burgers can you eat in a day?

(Students’ answers may vary)

Oh wow! You seem to enjoy eating burgers!

If you combine all those burgers, imagine how

tall that burger tower can be? Yes Sir!

How high do you imagine?

Now, do you want to make a burger tower?

Ok, let’s have an activity entitled “Burger

Tower”. Let me divide the class into 3 groups.
Yes Sir!
I have here a bunch of burger fillings and buns.
Your task is to design your own burger tower
according to your taste and preference but think
and plan for its layer carefully, because you
will be given a certain amount of money to
spend and a time limit to purchase. Here are the
additional mechanics for the activity. Burger Tower

1) Assign your members. The group must

have the following:
a) OWNER- the one who will
think for your business name
and introduce it to the class.
b) BUDGET OFFICER- the one
who will present the list of
purchase, expenses, and
remaining balance.
c) SUPPLY IN-CHARGE- the
one who will buy the supplies
needed.
d) FOOD ATTENDANT- the one
who will serve the burger
tower wearing the whole outfit
(apron and cap).
e) OTHERS- helpers
2) Each group will be given 500 pesos as
capital after which a time limit of 1
minute will be set to plan the list of
items to be purchased.

The table shows the price list of the

different burger fillings.
ITEMS PRICE
Smaller Patty 50
Cheese 35
Cucumber 30
Tomato 30
Big Patty 60
Lettuce 25

3) Supply in- charge in each group will be

given 30 seconds to pick your listed
burger fillings in our pantry
simultaneously so please be careful and
move as fast as you can. After 30
seconds of picking, you should go back
to your groupmates and start building
your burger tower.

4) You need to utilize 5 burger fillings.

There should be exactly 15 layers of
burger fillings. The bun is excluded in
the layers.

5) Two minutes will be given to finish

building your tower. Use the sauce
provided to secure the layering.

6) The tallest burger tower with the

highest remaining balance will be
receiving a special price.

Are you ready class?

(Activity Proper)
.
May I request group 1 to present your work.
Followed by group 2 and 3.

Very good! Can you give yourselves a good

job clap?
Yes Sir!
(Announce the winner)
(Each group presents their output)

A. Analysis

Based on the activity, what have you observed

in the layers of your burger tower?

How about the arrangement of filling, what did They are all different Sir.
you notice?

The fillings or layers are selected in any order Sir.

Some of the fillings are repeated.

So, what do you think is our lesson for today
class?
Combination with repetition sir.

Exactly! Now, when we talk about selecting of

items in combination such as this burger tower,
"THE ORDER DOES NOT MATTER." What
we did is we select different burger fillings in
any order and some of it were repeated in the
sequence of its arrangement.

And that is what we call now, Combination

with Repetition.

In your burger tower, the different fillings are

the elements.

Will you give me the different elements in

your tower burger.

Very good! Cheese, patty, cucumber, tomato, lettuce

And if you observed the arrangement some of

the fillings were repeated.

Therefore, what is Combination with

Repetition

It is combination with repetition when the elements

of a set can be repeated sir.
That’s right!

And, for as to solve we have the wording

formula for combination with repetition.

Where, n = the no. of items in the set

r = number of selected items from the set

Let us use the burger tower as an example.

There are five different fillings, namely:
cheese, cucumber, tomatoes, patties, and
lettuce. Those buns are excluded. How many
combinations are there to make a 15-layer
burger from the five fillings when repetition of
fillings is allowed?

Substitute these values in the above formula:

nCr = (n + r – 1)! / (r!) (n – 1)!

n=5
r= 15

= (5+ 15 – 1)! / (15!) (5 – 1)!

= 19x18x17x16x15! / 15! 4!
= 93, 024 / 24
= 3, 876

Therefore, there are 3, 876 combinations to

make a 15- layer burger from the 5 fillings.

Let me give you another example.

EXAMPLE 2:
What if we add 2 burger fillings: egg and
onions?

All in all, we already have 7 different fillings.

Now, how many combinations are there if we
select all the fillings to make a 15- layer
burger?

Substitute the values of n and r using the

formula: nCr = (n + r – 1)! / (r!) (n – 1)!

n=7
r=15

= (7+ 15 – 1)! / (15!) (7 – 1)!

= 21! / 15! 6!
= 21x 20x19x18x17x16x 15! / 15! 6!
= 39, 070, 080/ 720
= 54, 264

Therefore, there are 54, 264 ways to select all

the fillings to make a 15- layer burger.

Do you have questions class?

None Sir.
B. Abstraction

GROUP ACTIVITY

In your group, you will be given situational

problem to solve. Write your solutions in a
manila paper after which, present your work in
front.

Are you ready class?

Yes Sir!
Problem 1

Alice has 4 different ice cream flavors. How

many combinations are there to select if she
need to make 6 layers of ice cream from the
different flavors?

Substitute the values of n and r using the

formula: nCr = (n + r – 1)! / (r!) (n – 1)!
n=4
r= 6

= (4+ 6 – 1)! / (6!) (4 – 1)!

= 9x 8x 7x 6! /6! 3!
=504/ 6
= 84

Hence, the ice cream can be selected in 84 ways.

Problem 2

In the flower shop, they sell roses, tulips, and

daffodils. How many different bouquets of 5
flowers can we make?

Possibilities in making a bouquet:

- 5 roses
- 5 tulips
- 5 daffodils
- 2 roses 1 daffodil and 2 tulips
All of these are valid ways in making a
bouquet. Substitute these values of n and r using the
formula: nCr = (n + r – 1)! / (r!) (n – 1)!

n=3
r=5

= (3+ 5 – 1)! / (5!) (3 – 1)!

= 7x 6x 5 / 5! 2!
=42/ 2
= 21

Therefore, the bouquets of flowers that we can

make is 21.

Problem 3

How many ways are there to select three

unordered elements from a set with 5 elements
when repetition is allowed.
Substitute these values of n and r using the
formula: nCr = (n + r – 1)! / (r!) (n – 1)!

n=5
r= 3

= (5+ 3 – 1)! / (3!) (5 – 1)!

= 7x 6x 5x 4! / 3! 4!
=210/ 6
= 35 ways

Hence, there are 35 ways to select 3 unordered

elements from the set.

That’s it! Do you have any question? If none, I

have some questions here for you to test your
retention. Are you ready?
Yes sir!

1. What is combination with repetition?

This is when the elements of a set can be repeated.
2. What is the formula that we can use to nCr = (n + r – 1)! / (r!) (n – 1)! Sir.
solve for combination with repetition?

3. Aside from the given examples while back,

where do you usually encounter
combination and repetition?

Examples:
 Sangyup
 Cakes
 Books
(Students’ answer varies)

Excellent!

I can say that you really have understood our

lesson for today.

C. Application

An ice cream dessert consists of three scoops

of ice cream. Each scoop can be one of the
flavors: chocolate, vanilla, mint, lemon,
raspberry

In how many ways can you pick your dessert

such that you choose 3 scoops of ice cream
from 5 different flavors?

(Let one student solves on the board and check

if everybody got the correct answer)

(Student’s solve)

To solve the problem, imagine we have ice

cream in boxes. We start with leftmost box and
proceed towards right.
At every box, you can take 0-3 scoops, and
then move to next.

Let’s look at some selections and their

representation:

 3 scoops of chocolate
 1 vanilla, 1 raspberry, 1 lemon
 2 mints, 1 raspberry
We’ll denote the number of ways to choose r
objects from n kinds of object.

Substitute the values and use the formula: nCr

= (n + r – 1)! / (r!) (n – 1)!

n=5
r=3

= (5+ 3 – 1)! / (3!) (5 – 1)!

= 7x 6x 5x 4! / 3! 4!
=210/ 6
= 35

Hence, there are 35 ways to select 3 scoops of

ice cream.

V. Assessment

Consider a cash box containing $1 bills, $2

bills, $5 bills, $10 bills, $20 bills, $50 bills, and
$100 bills

There is at least five of each type of bill in the

box. How many ways are there to select 5 bills
from this cash box?

= (7+ 5 – 1)! / (5!) (7 – 1)!

= 11x 10x 9x 8x 7x 6! / 5! 6!
=55,440/ 120
= 462
