Noted ma’am.
Okay, very well. Thank you for your time, now
let's proceed to our discussion.

B. MOTIVATION

Good afternoon once again and welcome to the

first part of the lesson in Sports Officiating! In
this phase, activities are provided to activate
your prior knowledge of the lesson. From there,
follow-up activities will be given to elicit your
tentative understandings. And as you go
through the rest of the activities,
misconceptions, and alternative conceptions
you have in mind will be clarified. And finally,
your knowledge, considering its adequacy and
relevance, will be assessed at the end of the
lesson.

Before we proceed to our main topic, I want you

to do this activity, entitled 4 PICS 1 WORDS. I
know that you already have an idea about this
game. Am I right?
Yes, Ma’am!
So basically, in this activity I will post a series
of pictures and I want you to evaluate and
identify what is being portrayed in the picture. I
will present also jumbled letters to serve as
clues and I will give you 30 seconds to evaluate
the picture and arrange the letters to come up
with a word and after that I will call a student to
share their insights about the picture.

Does that make sense class?

Yes, Ma’am!
Okay let's proceed...

What are the pictures all about? Any idea?

Yes, Ms. ________?

Ma’am! First Aid!

Wow, great! Yes, the first picture is about First

Aid.

What made you say that it was about first aid?

Based on the pictures and the jumbled letters

it clearly talks about First Aid.
Okay thank you.
What is the picture all about?

Ma’am!
Yes, Mr. ________?

I believe it portray assessment.

That is right!

What are these pictures all about?

Ma’am!
Yes, Mr. _______.

I think it’s about injury ma’am.

Yes, that is correct!

How about these one?

Ma’am!
Yes, Ms. _______
Its RICE method ma’am.
That’s correct!

What can you say about the activity class? Is it

fun?
It is very fun ma’am!

C. PRESENTION

Now, what do you think is our topic today based

on those pictures I have showed you?
Ma’am!
Yes _______?
The pictures portray about first aid and
injuries, and I believe that is our topic for
today ma’am.

Great!

Yes you're right! Those pictures I have showed

to you has something to do in our topic today,
because those pictures are all about first aid and
some types of alternative treatments that you
may do in first aiding injuries that you may
encounter.

It's nice that you have already a background

schema about First Aid.

Today, we are going to discuss about the basics

of First Aid

D. DISCUSSION

What is First Aid?

Ma’am! May I?
Is there anyone here who knows what first aid
is? Yes, please!
Ma’am, first aid is the action we do to
provide immediate care on the injured
person.
Great, that is right!

Any other idea? Ma’am!

Yes, Ms. ________.
For me first aid is the immediate response to
provide aid on an injured person.
That's right, your answer are all correct!

So basically, first aid is an immediate and

temporary care given to a person who has been
injured or suddenly taken ill. It includes self-
help and home care if medical assistance is not
available or delayed.

So why there is a need for us to learn first aid?

Anyone in the class? Yes Mr. __________.
Ma’am!

For me this are beneficial because in case

there are emergency we know how to
respond and treat injured persons.
That’s correct! Any other hand?

Ma’am!
Yes Ms. ________

For me ma’am, learning the basics of first

aid help is to know what the necessary
actions are we do in case there are injured
person, and we can used this also in our
respective homes.

Yes, that’s right, learning the BASICS of

FIRST AID is very important and necessary for
all individuals in the community. Learning First
Aid enables us to become knowledgeable on
how we will assist persons who become injured
in the event of an accident or emergency until
help arrives. And learning these skills, we can
apply it in our own home, even in our school or
workplace or in public locations. Therefore, we
need to be equipped with these skills so that we
can provide necessary emergency care to our
loved ones or even classmates when emergency
and accidental injuries happen. The more we are
equipped with the First Aid skills the more we
can provide and give emergency care faster and
safer among all people in the community.

Thank you to the two sharers

Okay let’s proceed...

So basically, there are three objectives of first

aid:

Can anyone give me the three objectives of first

aid?
Ma’am!
Yes _______?
 To alleviate suffering
 To prevent added/further injury or
danger; and
 To prolong life
You got it right! Basically, the purpose of First
Aid is to save lives of an injured person. Take
note also class that as a first aider should
practice the very most traits of being a first aid
such as: be gentle, respectful, resourceful,
observant, emphatic and tactful.

Why is it important to possess this traits class?

Ma’am!

Yes Ms. ________

For me it is important to practice these traits
to handle our patients with care and to make
them feel ease despite their condition after
an injury.
Yes, that's right. Especially as a first aider, we
should be sensitive towards our patient, and we
should handle them with care to alleviate them
from suffering.

Now, when someone gets injured class what is

the first thing to do class? Anyone?
Ma’am, for me it is necessary to check the
area if it safe or not before doing the first aid.
Yes, that's right, the first thing to do is to check
the area if it is safe to conduct the first aid or
not. If the area is safe quickly perform the
primary assessment. But if the area is
dangerous, then find a place that is safe for you
to perform first aid.

Now what is Primary Assessment? May I ask

Mr. __________ to read the definition of
Primary Assessment.
Primary assessment is the first examination
and evaluation of a patient by a medical
person such as a trained emergency medical
technician or other first responder to an
emergency and is focused on stabilizing the
patient.

Basically, the purpose of Primary Assessment is

to check a person to determine their initial
conditions and whether there is any life-
threatening concerns. Before performing a first
aid.

So here are the steps in Primary Assessment,

kindly read Ms. ________.

 Check for Danger. (Asses the areas if

it’s safe to perform a First aid)

 Check for a Response. (Tap the victim

if he is conscious or not) And if the
victim is unconscious apply the ABC's

 A stand for Airway, B stands for

Breathing and C for Circulation

 Open Airway- you should tilt the head

and chin of the victim and open his/ her
mouth.

 Check Breathing- check for normal

breathing 5-10 seconds, you should put
your ears closer to the mouth of the
victim and feel the air coming out on the
victim’s mouth and nose while watching
the rising and falling of the chest area.

 Check Circulation- quickly look at the

person from head to toe for sign of life-
threatening external bleeding if there is,
and we should control or stop it as soon
as possible.
Again class, when you are performing the
ABC’s, you do it as quickly as possible because
time is very important. After that, if the person
is still unconscious but the breathing is normal
you can now move the victim into recovery
position. Always remember that you should
avoid rolling the victim. Doing it could worsen
the victim’s condition.

Now let us move to Secondary Assessment

Secondary Assessment is checking the person

for other injuries after you do the primary
assessment.

Take note class, there are some cases that if the

victim is conscious, we can skip the primary
assessment and directly perform the secondary
assessment.

There are three steps in secondary assessment;

kindly read Mr. __________.
1. Ask questions- interview the victims or
bystander near the scene to get information.
These are some questions you might asked;
How do you feel? Do you feel any pain? Do
you have any cuts or bruises? etc.

2. Check the victims vital signs- you need to

evaluate his level of responsiveness such as
breathing and skin

3. Doing an injury test- the primary goal of

this step is to carefully look for injury that
were not identified doing the primary
assessment.
Based on your understanding, what do you think
class is the importance of conducting primary
and secondary assessment to our victims?

Ma’am! For me the importance of

assessment is for a safe response to
emergencies for the benefit of casualties,
bystanders, and rescuers. It secures the
emergency site to reduce further harm to the
casualty, using appropriate first aid
procedures and techniques and safely
moving the casualty, minimizing pain, and
helping stabilize the condition.

Okay very good!

Now, let’s watch a short video about primary

and secondary assessment.
https://youtu.be/Qu_PkCu3XRA
(students watching)

Remember class, if the victim does not

complain about the pain or tenderness and there
are no signs of injuries, asked the person to rest
for a few minutes in a comfortable position.
Always check the victims’ vital signs and
ensure the ABCs are still unaffected.

Let us now proceed to another method use in

first aid, which is R.I.C.E Method

Does anyone in the class have an idea, what R.

I. C. E method is? Yes, Ms. _________.

Ma’am! RICE stand for Rest, Ice,

Compression and Elevation.

Okay thank you. That’s correct. R. I. C. E.

stand for Rest, Ice, Compression and
Elevation.

When do we usually use RICE METHOD

class? Ma’am! For me RICE Method are usually
apply when threating body injuries like
sprain, strain, and the like.

Yes, that is right. RICE method are used for

emergency instances to at least alleviate the
pain of the victim when injured.

Now let’s dig deeper on each component.

Kindly read the first component Ms. ________.
1. Rest the injured part, especially for the
first 24 to 48 hours after the injury – this is
the most critical time of treatment. Avoid
any activity that causes pain or makes it
worse. Use crutches if the leg, foot, or ankle
is injured. Support an injured wrist, arm, or
shoulder with a sling. Tape an injured toe or
finger to its healthy neighbor.

Why it is important to rest when you have an

injured part of your body?

Yes, _______. Ma’am!

So that the injured part of the body will not

become severe.
Yes, apparently if you try to not rest your inured
body, it will worsen your condition which is
why it is very necessary to rest until you will
recover and not feel any pain.

Now let’s move to ICE. Kindly read ________.

Ice is an excellent anti-inflammatory and
reduces swelling and pain. Apply an ice pack
or cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes as
soon as possible after an injury. Repeat each
hour for the first 3 or 4 hours, then 4 times a
day for the next 2 to 3 days. Protect your skin
with a thin cloth. If ice packs are not
available, a packet of frozen vegetables in a
cloth will do.
May I call on Mr. _______to read the third
component?

3. Compression also reduces swelling. Use

elastic bandages for at least 2 days. Check
that the bandage is snug, but not too tight.
Take the bandage off at night

Based on the definition it is said that

compression helps to reduce swelling of an
injured part, it also serves as a protection on the
injured part of the body.

Next is Elevation, kindly read Ms. __________.

4. Elevation drains fluids from injured

tissues. Elevate the injured area whenever
you are sitting or lying down. Try to keep the
injured area at or above the level of the heart.

For you to further understand RICE method,

let’s watch a video regarding the RICE Method.
https://youtu.be/PxCac1HzoJ8
(students watching)
Now class based on your own idea, why it is
important to familiarize the RICE? Anyone?

Ma’am!

Yes, ________.

Ma’am for me, RICE method is the

necessary first aid we must do for the
injuries not to be severe.
Okay, great! It can help you remember several
basic treatments for soft tissue injuries,
specifically, rest, ice, compression, and
elevation. Always remember that RICE method
is considered a first aid technique rather than a
complete or comprehensive medical treatment.

Now let me share a video regarding a scenario

about injuries and the first aid you must do.
First aid- https://youtu.be/XjMvBW9KDLA

Please do watch it class because you will have

an idea later in doing your activities.
(students watching)

E. GENERALIZATION

And that’s it class. Now, may ask anyone who

can summarize what we have discussed a while
ago? Anyone? Ma’am!
Yes, ________.
So, in today’s discussion we talk about the
Basics of First Aid, the two-assessment
process before giving first. We also talk
about the RICE method which stands for
Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation which
are the necessary moves when giving first
aid.

Very good! Thank you _________.

F. APPLICATION

Activity Time!

To test your understanding about our discussion

today. I will divide the class into 3 groups. Each
group will come up with a 3 minute long role
play, portraying the primary and secondary
assessment. 1 will act as an injured person 3
may act as first aider and other may act as a
bystanders. I will give you 5 minutes to
conceptualize what will you going to perform.
After 5 minutes you need to present it in the
class. Are my instructions clear class?
Yes ma’am!

Your output will be graded guided by the

rubrics.

You may now start.

Answer the following questions and write your answer whether it’s true or false. And also
answer the essay questions below. Put your answer in a ½ sheet of paper.

TRUE OR FALSE

1. Time is not important in giving first aid.

2. In the ABC’s C stands for circulation.
3. If the person is unconscious, you can skip Primary Assessment and directly perform
secondary assessment.
4. To alleviate suffering is one of the objectives of first aid.
5. First aid is an immediate and temporary care given to a person who has been injured or
suddenly taken ill.

Essay: What is the essence of learning first aid in our lives? Give your thoughts on how important
is the knowledge and skills in applying appropriate first aid techniques to an injured individuals or
athlete? Make it short, 3 to 4 sentences can do.

IV. ASSIGNMENT

For your assignment, answer the following question:

Situation: A basketball player is running down the court and feels a pop in the back of his lower
leg.

Signs and Symptoms: Athlete complains of intense pain with swelling and discoloration in his
lower leg. Athlete is unable to walk and is not able to rise on his toes. Obvious deformity in the
back of the lower leg.
