6. Setting out

Three steps will be included while completing the concreting job

a. In PCC work the area need to be demarked completely as indicated in the drawing. To make
this job complete co-ordinates will be neatly marked on the founding level/soil with the help
of total station and level of the surface will be ensured by level machine.
b. For any substructure (Raft/foundation) or super structure (pedestal, wall, column, and
beam) work and every lift of the structure, the co-ordinate points will be marked according
to the drawing and the line (horizontal and vertical) of the structure will be ensured.
c. The very important and most critical part of the setting out job is to ensure the proper
position of the embedded parts (bolt, sleeve, pipe, plate), which are falling in the concrete
job. All the fixtures will be placed within the permissible limit.

7. Methodology
Transportation of Concrete:
a. The concrete shall be transported to the placing/pouring point from batching plant as
rapidly as possible using transit mixture. During hot weather transit mixtures will be
covered with hessian cloth to avoid direct sun falling on the surface of the miller.
b. Once concrete is mixed in batching plant, no further water will be added.
c. All equipment, used for transporting and placing of concrete shall be maintained in
clean condition. All hopper, chute, transit mixture shall be cleaned thoroughly.

Placing of concrete:
a. Prior to starting the concreting operation, pour card, a document mentioning all
acceptance criteria from the owner, need to be signed. If any observation/comment will
be marked by the client, the point will be attended and will be asked for check before
starting concreting operation.
b. The concrete shall be placed to its final position by using concrete pump/Boom
placer/Chute in such a manner that the quality and uniformity of concrete, in terms of
w/c ratio, slump and homogeneity will be preserved.
c. Sufficient plant machinery and transportation facility will be ensured before the
concreting operation. The rate of delivery of concrete will be such that that any cold
joint will be avoided during the entire operation.
d. Each expansion joint will be separated from the adjacent foundation by providing
Shalitex board/Thermocol of specified thickness. Water stopper/kicker bar will be
provided will be laid longitudinally and vertically in the water retaining structure.
e. If the concrete has to be placed in night, proper illumination shall be ensured and will be
maintained a safe working environment.
f. All items to be embedded in concrete shall be correctly positioned and securely hold in
position, well in advance of concreting.
g. While preparing for concrete, all debris, saw dust, wooden plank will be removed from
the form work.
h. Concrete will be placed in such a manner that the segregation of the concrete will be
avoided, at the same time placed reinforcement and embedded parts will be ensured at
its original position. Concrete shall not be permitted to fall from a height above 1.5 m.
i. Storm water or curing water from existing structure, which may get accumulate on the
founding surface, shall be removed before concrete placement. No concrete will be
placed on water covered surface. However, the surface must be saturated surface dry
condition.
j. Concrete shall be placed at a thickness not exceeding the 500 mm.

Compaction:
a. Needle vibrator shall be inserted vertically at closed interval in a systematic manner to
ensure that all concrete are adequately compacted. Vibrators will not be used to move
the concrete.
b. Vibrators will be applied thoroughly to work the concrete around the reinforcement and
embedded parts and into the angles of the form.
c. Vibrators will be available in sufficient number and concrete will be properly compacted
each layer immediately after it has poured into the forms.

Curing:
Curing is the most required procedure in post concreting operation. Exposer surfaces
concrete will be kept continuously in damp condition by ponding or covering a layer of
hessian material. Water for curing arrangement will be done by water tank, tapping
from nearest pipeline. Procedure will be any of as follows.

a. Hessian or Gunny Bags: This is a widely used method of curing, particularly for
structural concrete. Thus exposed surface of concrete is prevented from drying out by
covering it with hessian. The covering over vertical and sloping surfaces should be
secured properly. These are periodically wetted. The interval of sprinkled with water
will depend upon the rate of evaporation of water.
b. Sprinkling of Water: Sprinkling of water continuously on the concrete surface provides
an efficient curing. It is mostly used for curing floor slabs. The concrete should be
allowed to set sufficiently before sprinkling is started. For this method of curing the
water requirement is higher.
c. Ponding Method: This is the best method of curing. It is suitable for curing horizontal
surfaces such as floors, roof slabs, and road pavements. After 24 hours, small ponds of
clay or sand will be built across and along the pavements. The area is thus divided into a
number of rectangles. The water is filled between the ponds. The filling of water in
these ponds is done twice or thrice a day, depending upon the atmospheric conditions.
d. Membrane Curing: This method of curing is termed as membrane curing. A membrane
will prevent the evaporation of water from the concrete. The membrane can be either
in solid or liquid form. They are also known as sealing compounds. This method will be
applied where water can’t be transported easily, like feeder and tipper floor of bunker
bay.

8. HSE Requirement
Recognizing health, environment and safety hazards is the most important element while
doing concreting operation. The second element is the precaution implemented to prevent
or reduce the hazard. The hazard ranges from cement unloading, concrete mixing, carrying
to pouring at site. To curb those potential hazards following measures will be taken at the
construction site.
a. All workers will undergo a safety induction before entering site. PPEs (safety shoes +
safety helmets compulsory) will be provided to workers with respect to their jobs.
Proper access, hand rail, toe guard, grating (Zali), safety ribbons will be on site as per
standard. Awareness will be raise among the worker how to maintain safe distance
from the moving/rotating machines. Toolbox talk will be followed during work.
b. Cement is an alkaline material, wet cement is caustic, and can cause severe chemical
burns to exposed skin and eyes. Workers will always wear water-proof hand gloves, a
long-sleeved shirt, full-length trousers, and proper eye protection. In case of wet

concrete, workers will use water-proof boot (Gum Boots) that are high enough to keep
concrete from flowing into them.
c. While working at height (more than 1.8 m) special care need to be taken. Workers will
undergo training of working at height. In few case special persons will be permitted to
work at height only, use of safety belt, working platform, walk way grating, toe guard,
handrail will be compulsory. Night permit and height permit will be issued to the
contractor, without authorised permit work can’t be started.
d. Scaffolding staging will be built by special skilled person. Stable degree of slope of ramp
will be maintained, good quality walk way will be provided to avoid slipping. Heavy duty
pipes and clamps will be used for staging work.
e. While working in confined space, special permission/permit need to obtain. Oxygen
level will be checked before/while working in the pit and attendant will be deployed at
top to report/rescue if any miss happening supposed to occur.
f. All electrical connection, panels and machineries will be checked/operated by the
certified electrician only. No loose connection will be allowed, electric cables will be over
ground, proper earthing will be provided for all the electrical equipments, ELCB will be
provided in the panels.
g. All equipment should be properly maintained and equipped with certified
operators/driver. Disabling or removing safety devices is dangerous and should be
avoided. All unsafe or inoperable equipment should be marked as such to prevent
further use of the equipment. All workers should be trained and tested by the manager
or superintendent before operating any equipment (from transit millers to backhoes).
Fitness of the vehicle will be tested periodically.
