Administrative Assistant Position Expectations

Responsibilities?
In an administrative position, you will be in charge of a variety of administrative duties that
ensure the smooth operation of your employer's business. Your responsibilities will depend on
your profession and the business you work for, but they could include:
● Responding to enquiries received via phone, email, and social media and, when
necessary, referring them to other personnel
● Composing letters and reports on a computer at work
● Incoming and outgoing mail processing
● Making and keeping records on computers
● Keeping paper records
● Keeping track of inventory and office supplies, and placing orders as necessary
● Performing rudimentary bookkeeping tasks
● Scheduling conferences, meetings, and other events
● Keeping records of business meetings
● Arranging appointments for managers and executives

Environment?
Administrative assistants operate in a variety of office environments, including those in law
companies, hospitals, government offices, schools, and private businesses.

While some administrative assistants operate independently in their own offices, usually near to
the CEO they support, others collaborate in shared offices with other administrative
professionals. Most administrative assistants own a computer of their own. Rarely do they share
workstations with other staff members of the organization.

Offices where administrative assistants work are typically calm places, but when deadlines
approach or business operations pick up, they can become stressful.
