Risk Assessment Corridors, Walkways and Stairs

Environment Staff Caretaker to check all routes are adequate illuminated at start of day to enable people to move about
Children safely - lights are working and switched on where required
Visitors Doors fitted with self closure devices. Consider magnetic locks used to secure doors in corridors to
prevent door closing on children’s fingers which will be linked to the fire alarm system
Ensure appropriate selection of glazing in doors and door panels with consideration given to location,
height of glazing, traffic volume, fire resistant etc.
Corridors and passageways must be wide enough to allow all people to move freely (including people
with buggies, wheelchair users and people carrying items)
Slips and Trips Staff Ensure stairs should have high visibility, non slip square nosing on step edges, steps are equal
Children height / width and have suitable handrails
Visitors Ensure inspections are undertaken on floor and stair treads - clean and in good condition. There
should be no excessive wear, missing treads or loose treads. Ensure defects are reported
immediately with prompt remedial action
Immediate cleaning up of spillages – erect appropriate signs
Carrying items up and downstairs should not be encouraged unless you can keep one hand firmly on
the handrail and have clear view of the steps
Ensure bags and coats are not blocking corridors.
Identify appropriate designated storage areas for these items. Ensure visual inspections are carried
out daily by staff and defects reported

Falls Staff Ensure students are aware they should always walk on stairs. No running, jumping downstairs when
Children descending. Ensure students should be advised to use the hand rail whether climbing up or
downstairs
Pedestrian Staff Ensure a staggered release of students onto heavily used traffic routes
Interface Pupils Encourage / enforce safe movement around the school
Visitors Put in place measures for traffic streaming and flow management up / down stairs and corridors
Instruct pupils on safe use of premises (i.e. walk don’t run, traffic system)
Record / report / investigate all accidents and near misses as appropriate
Fire Staff Location and quantity of display materials on escape routes should be kept under control because
Children the cardboard, paper and plastic can result in rapid fire spread. There should be clear gaps between
each display approximately one metre
Everyone must be acquainted with the Fire evacuation procedures for their area
Ensure fire exit doors and escape routes in corridors are unobstructed and doors easy to open

Biological Staff Ensure potential hazardous waste (e.g. vomit / bodily fluids) must be disposed of correctly and
Children surfaces properly disinfected
Ensure personal protective equipment is provided and worn
Adequate provision for hand washing (soap hot water) readily available
All wounds on exposed skin are suitably covered

Unauthorised Staff Ensure access routes are clearly identified. Notices to be displayed ‘No Entry’ where access is
