Paragraph Patterns
There are four useful patterns of organization of paragraphs: the
direct pattern, the turnabout pattern, the climactic pattern, and
the interrogative pattern.

I. The Direct Paragraph:

The direct paragraph, as its name implies, begins with a statement
of the controlling idea (with the topic sentence). The controlling
idea in a direct paragraph will usually be stated in the first
sentence, rarely later than the second. What follows in the
paragraph will develop the controlling idea – by defining it,
qualifying it, analyzing it, and most frequently, illustrating it.
Then, to create a direct paragraph, you should begin by clearly
stating your controlling idea and then continue by developing it.

Whether or not its controlling idea is restated in the final sentence,

the direct paragraph has an obvious advantage over all other
paragraph patterns: the direct paragraph is clear, straightforward,

and easy to follow. It is a pattern well-suited to inform and clarify

because readers know exactly where you are taking them. The
direct paragraph minimizes the chances for misunderstanding or
confusion.

But while the direct paragraph is often the best pattern for
informing and for clarifying, it is usually not as effective for
persuading as the other common paragraph patterns.

II. The Turnabout Paragraph:

The turnabout paragraph differs from the direct paragraph in that
it does not begin with a statement of its controlling idea. Instead, the
turnabout paragraph begins with an observation or suggestion that
is often the direct opposite of its controlling idea.

For example, a turnabout paragraph whose controlling idea is that

“most modern American writers live relatively happy lives” might
open with observation that points in an opposite direction: Ernest
Hemingway putting a double-barreled shotgun to his forehead,

Johan Berryman leaping into the Mississippi River, Sylvia Plath

sticking her head into an oven”.

Unlike the direct paragraph, which moves in one direction only, the
turnabout paragraph moves first in one direction and then in
another. Because it changes direction, the turnabout paragraph
may confuse your readers unless you help them follow its
movement.

1) The first way to help is by indicating that they should not accept
the opening observation as true. You can encourage readers to
question the truth of the opening observation by introducing it
with a phrase like “Many people believe that …” or “It is
commonly assumed that …”

2) The second way of helping readers follow a turnabout paragraph

is by signaling when the turn comes. The clearest signal is the
simple word “but”. Other signals of a change in direction include
connectives like “yet, however, and nevertheless”,

subordinators like “although, even though, and while”, and

prepositions like “despite, contrary to, and by contrast”.

3) The third and most important way to help readers follow a
turnabout paragraph is by clearly stating the controlling idea of
the paragraph in the final sentence. Even if the controlling idea
has been stated earlier in the paragraph, it’s almost always best
to conclude a turnabout paragraph with a statement or
restatement of its central point.

Carefully constructed turnabout paragraphs have one major

advantage over direct paragraphs: they tend to be more persuasive.
Because it presents one point of view before advancing another, the
turnabout paragraph suggests your willingness to see both sides of
a question.
