instances of the new lesson Our lesson for today is all about summarizing a story
(presentation) based on elements.

D. Discussing new concepts Let us define first what we mean by summary.

and practicing new skills #1
A summary is a short retelling of a story or a text that
includes only the most important information.
Summaries include the main idea of the text and
exclude the minor details.

Summaries are considerably shorter than the original

text.
When you summarize, you keep your mind the answers
to the questions who, what, when, where, why and
how.
1. Where did the story happen?
2. Who are the characters in the story?
3. What is the beginning event of the story? the
middle? And the ending?
4. What was the problem in the story?
5. How was the problem resolved?

When summarizing, you must:

 Read and comprehend the text.
 Identify the main ideas and key points.
 Take down notes.
 Summarize the information in your own word.

Now let us proceed to narrative text and the elements.

Narrative text is a type of literary text that entertains,
informs, or instructs readers by telling a story.

These are the main elements of narrative text.

1. Character
2. Setting
3. Mood
4. Theme
5. Plot

Characters- refer to the people, animals, or creatures

that take part in the action of the story.
Usual question:
Who are the character in the story?
Examples:
Elsa, anna, Kristof (frozen)

Setting- the time and place in which the events happen.

Usual question;
Where and when the story happens or take place?
Examples:
One day at the beach.

Mood- the general feeling created in the reader upon

reading or listening through word choice and pacing.
Usual question:
What do you feel upon reading the story?
Examples:
Excited
Frustrated
Sympathetic
Amused

Theme- the author’s message or central concept about

life or human nature conveyed through the story. It
refers to the lesson or moral of the story.
Usual question:
What is the story all about?
What is the message of the story?
Examples:
Importance of the family
Benefits of hard work

Plot- tells the sequence of events from the beginning,

middle, and ending. It is made up of the problem,
important events, and the resolution.
In the beginning, you will find out:
Who will be the characters?
Where and when the story occurs?
What is the problem?
In the middle, you usually find:
The main characters attempts at solving the problem.
In the end, you will find the:
The closure or the end. It can be tragic, happy ending,
unexpected ending or there can also be a cliff-hanger
ending.

E. Discussing new concepts Now, let us try to summarize a story based on the
and Practicing new skills #2 elements.

The magic tree

A long, long time ago a little boy was walking through a

park. In the middle of the park there was a tree with a
sign on it. The sign said "I am a magic tree. Say the
magic words and you will see."
The boy tried to guess the magic words. He tried
abracadabra, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, tan-ta-ra,
and many more... but none of them worked.
Exhausted, he threw himself on the floor, saying:
"Please, dear tree!" and suddenly, a big door opened in
the trunk. Inside everything was dark, except for a sign
which said "Carry on with your magic." Then the boy
said "Thank you, dear tree!" With this, the inside of the
tree lit up brightly and revealed a pathway leading to a
great big pile of toys and chocolate.
The little boy brought all his friends to the magic tree,
and they had the best party ever. This is why people
always say that "please" and "thank you" are the magic
words.

Setting. Write down, when and where did the story

happen?

MARIO

Mario stood calmly by the door of the principal’s office

while waiting for his teacher. He looked farther to check
on his adviser if she would be coming because she was
nowhere. After a few minutes, a spectacled man was in
sight; it was the school principal. Mario told the
principal about the purpose of his visit. He made his
statement clear why he brought his cell phone to
school. He told the principal that his classmates shouted
at him in their classroom, telling him that bringing cell
phones was not allowed. He felt weal explaining his
reason for doing it. He told the principal that it hurt him
to have violated a school policy but doing this made him
feel secured to text or call up his sick mother at home.
He told the principal that he was sorry for doing it. But it
hurt him because his purpose was his concern for his
sick mother. The principal patted the apologetic pupil on
the shoulder and spoke kindly to him.
