While you are reading your Literature Circle novel, you will be expected to record

entries in a double-entry journal. You may include interesting quotations from the text,
questions about the text, and connections between the text and your own life. During
your literature circle discussion, you will trade journals with another group member, and
respond to his/her entry under the Peer Response. You may then use these entries as
talking points within your group discussion.

The expectation is that you will complete 1 journal entry/class and spread out your
entries throughout your reading.

1. I wonder what Rasheed
will do to Laila and Mariam
and if he knows it was Laila
who organized the whole
escape plan.
“Rasheed grabbed Laila by I think even if he knew it was
the elbow and pushed her up Laila who made the escape
the steps” (Hosseini 267). plan, he would still punish
Mariam for “influencing” her.
The quote implies that he
knows Laila was the one with
the plan. He must believe that
Laila is smarter than Mariam
and that Mariam would’ve
never left without Laila.
However, I do believe he will
also punish Mariam for
leaving as well.

2. I believe Laila will have a
baby boy and Rasheed will
finally forgive her and start
treating her better.
“Laila rocked back and forth, This statement is true to an
hands pressing against her extent.
belly” (Hosseini 286).
Since Laila is at the hospital it
must be something important.
Rasheed wants her to be
admitted to the hospital and
is actually trying to help her.
This implies that she’s
pregnant because Rasheed
is hoping he finally has a
baby boy that he can spoil
and love. Maybe if she has a
boy, Rasheed will start being
 kinder to Laila and Aziza.

3. Aziza acts more like a
parent to Zalmai then Laila
and Rasheed
“Aziza who with lightheartedly
authority had taken it upon
herself to wake Zalmai every
day, to dress him, feed him
his breakfast,comb his hair”
(Hosseini 297).
I don’t know about this one
because Rasheed has
always wanted a son and so
he spoiled him and tried
being the best father.

These are actions that a

parent would take on for their
child. Not a 6 year old girl
who is only 4 years older than
Zalmai. Rasheed is too happy
with Zalmai to ever discipline
him or teach him like a father
does. Meanwhile, Laila can
never be with Zalmai
beecause Rasheed gets
upset. I believe Rasheed with
get tired of Aziza influencing
Zalmai and try and get rid of
her.

4. Laila will get caught visiting “I’m your mother. If it kills me, Yes.
Aziza and be punished or I’ll come and see you”
worse by the Taliban (Hosseini 315).

I believe this is
foreshadowing the future.
Laila will secretly visit Aziza
without Rasheed’s
permission and she’ll
eventually get caught by the
Taliban for leaving her house
without her husband. This will
lead to her getting punished
by the Taliban for breaking
their rules and may even lead
to punishment for Rasheed.
