The author looked to create a comic strip to downplay the idea of climate change as the whole
body of work acts as a piece of irony. At first glance, it may seem like the author is looking to
bring awareness to climate change, and the audience tends to agree after a simile overlook of
the work. The author’s theme, which revolves around the naming conventions of “Mother
Nature,” can lead the audience to believe that the author is acting in good faith. However, a
deeper analysis of the text shows that the author sees climate change as a joke and tries to
portray it through the subject of “Mother Nature.”

The core idea is presented within the characters portrayed as dinosaurs. Displayed using the
technique of anthropomorphism, the dinosaurs are deliberating over the naming metaphors
given to the title “Mother Nature.” The dinosaurs act like philosophers as they discuss the
logic behind the given title and how to change its metaphor. However, the T-rex, or the
protagonist, devalues the ideas of the velociraptor. A version of hypophora the T-rex instead
answers its own question by proposing titles like “Brother Entropy” and “Uncle Everybodies.”
The author’s use of dinosaurs, especially a T-rex, is how he de-emphasizes the nature of
climate change as it alludes to the extinction event that killed most of the dinosaurs.

This idea leads to the literary technique of irony as the author presents an example of all three
forms within the work. First, as previously mentioned, the allusion to the extinction event is an
example of dramatic irony. The audience knows how the dinosaurs died, so it is ironic that the
dinosaurs in the comic are commenting on what killed them. The following example is seen
through situational irony as the T-rex is seen as a barbaric entity, so, ironically, they care
about how motherly “Mother Nature” is and are trying to act compassionable when they are
not portrayed as being empathetic. Lastly, verbal irony is used by the T-rex when they offer
the idea that “Mother Nature” should be changed to “Aunt Thestrongwilleattheweak.” As a
T-rex, they are at the top of the food chain, so obviously, they believe that the title “Mother
Nature” should be rooted in their traits.

The author uses the comparison of a T-rex to “Mother Nature” through self dialogue as a way
to topic about the themes of “Mother Nature.” They use the ideas of irony surrounding the
traits of the T-rex to show how unimportant climate change is and how in reality it is a joke.
