Activity 5.2

1. Karaoke

Invented by Roberto Del Rosario. The musical

inclination of Filipinos pushed him to invent the karaoke
sing-along system. His sing along system was a compact
audio device that had a microphone, an amplifier
speaker, cassette tape mechanisms, a microphone mixer
that had features that enhanced voice, and an optional
radio tuner. This machine was originally designed as a
teaching device for students enrolled in voice lessons.
Karaoke players are advantageous because it boosts the
confidence of children in speaking and singing in
public. The kids who fear of holding the mic in their
hands can practice singing through these players and
bring up the confidence to sing later on. But, not all
karaoke players have a good sound quality. Other than
the huge weight, this is another disadvantage observed
in karaoke players.

2. Mole Remover

Developed by Rolando Dela Cruz. Used

cashew extract to remove moles and warts
from the skin without an operation. Which is
common in the Philippines and known as
“kasoy”. Compared to other wart, liver patch,
skin patch, xanthelasma, millia, syringoma and
other skin disease treatments the cream is
proven to be safe, effective and affordable. The
non-surgical application is relatively painless
and leaves no scars. The disadvantage of using
it is the fact that some people are allergic to
nuts which can lead to rashes and itchiness on
the skin when it comes into contact with
cashews.
3. Mango Flowering

By Ramon Barba, due to his belief that

smudging was tedious and expensive.
Furthermore, the process also emits
pollutants into the atmosphere. He
proposed an alternative: the use of a
chemical spray called Ethereal (2-
chloroethylphosphonic acid). He
discovered potassium nitrate as a
mango flower inducer His idea was
met with derision and rejected for
experiments, until one day, his friends
Mr. and Mrs. Jose Quimson allowed
him to conduct a trial using 400 mango
trees. And now, it is used to produce
more “seasonal” mangoes. But obviously not all are advantageous. With the indiscriminate application
of potassium nitrate, the yield of mango trees has been continuously declining. The average yield now
has gone down to only 200 fruits per tree. Other farmers are forcing the trees to produce what is
expected from the trees.

4. Fluorescent Lamp

Agapito Flores is the inventor of the

fluorescent lamp which is the most
widely used source of lighting in the
world today. The fluorescent lamp
reportedly got its name from Flores.
The fluorescent lamp, however, was
not invented in a particular year. It was
the product of the development of the
lighting method that began with the
invention of the electric light bulb by
Thomas Edison. The advantages of this
lamp are: more energy efficient than
incandescent lamps, longer operational
lifespan, better light diffusions, and
less heat emission. On the other hand, its disadvantages are: they are more expensive, it has health and
environmental issues, susceptibility to degradation, problems with dimming, and not a better alternative
than LED lamps.
5. Water-powered car

Daniel Dingel started working on a

water-powered car and prototype in
1969. His hydrogen reactor uses
electricity from a 12-volt car battery to
transform ordinary tap water with salt
into deuterium oxide or heavy water.
Dingel’s car has never been patented
and commercializes because of what he
suspects as anti-Dingel car conspiracy
by multinational oil companies. The
advantages of this kind of car are: they
are much cheaper, and also better for the
environment since they create zero
emissions, thus will not contribute to
global warming. One disadvantage of
this invention is that this type of car
would be extremely expensive since
they charge lot to make one.
