1. SCOPE
This procedure describes the techniques and methods to be employed for
performing visible magnetic particle testing for welds, scared or repaired areas after
grinding to remove discontinuities, parent materials and other items made from
ferromagnetic materials to detect cracks and other discontinuities on the test
surface and recording the results of examination.
Applicable method: the continuous method with visible magnetic particle shall be
applied.
Applicable component: ferrous material and their welds in all shape, size and
thickness.

3. PERSONNEL
Personnel performing testing shall be suitably trained and qualified to ASNT, SNT-
TC-1A, ISO 9712 or other recognized national standard or certification schemes
(e.g. CSWIP or PCN). Only personnel qualified to level II or III shall carry out the
interpretation and evaluation of test results.
4. EQUIPMENT
Magnetization shall be induced by an AC/DC electromagnetic yoke or a permanent
magnet yoke having adjustable pole pieces.
A lifting power of at least 4.5 kg for the AC yokes and 18 kg for the permanent or
DC magnetic yokes at the maximum pole spacing shall be required. The
magnetizing (lifting) power of yokes shall be verified prior to use each day the yoke
is used or whenever the yoke has been damaged or malfunction is suspected. The
results of these verifications shall be recorded on the Magnetic Yoke Test Log (see
Exhibit 1)
The permanent magnetic yoke should only be used when a power supply is not
available or the working environment does not permit hot work.
a) Visual check the yoke for any physical damage, cracking of casing, wire
connections
5. DETECTING MEDIUM
Either water or paraffin based magnetic ink, which meets the requirements of ASME
SE-709 / ASTM E709 shall be used. The particle concentration of mixed ink at site
from bulk shall be verified in accordance with section 5.1. The particle concentration
of pre-mixed ink (usually aerosol cans) will be verified by certificate from the
manufacture. The color of magnetic particles shall be chosen so that a high contrast
shall be provided on a white background.
For each new batch of mixed ink from bulk, the particle concentration shall
be checked as follow:
b) Break Test
Prior to the initial usage of each new batch of water based mixed ink from
bulk, a break test to check for adequate wetting properties shall be carried
out as follow:
Apply sample of the newly mixed ink to the surface of the test piece.
The ink should flow evenly over the surface. If the ink collects in
globules on the surface then it shall be rejected.
Particle concentration check and break test shall be repeated on a daily basis
and the result recorded on the Magnetic Ink Test Log (see Exhibit 2)
6. CONTRAST LACQUER
In order to improve contrast, a thin layer of a proprietary brand of rapid drying high
opacity white contrast, nonmagnetic lacquer shall be applied. The lacquer must
adhere firmly to the test surface and not be soluble in the detection medium.
7. SURFACE PREPARATION
The surface to be tested and all adjacent areas within at least 1 inch (25 mm) which
are subjects to magnetic particle testing shall be clean and free from paint, oil
grease, heavy scale or corrosion deposits and any other extraneous matter which
could interfere with the test. In most cases adequate surface cleaning will be
achieved by means of a wire brush. Surfaces may also be prepared by solvent
cleaning, grit blasting or a combination of these methods.
Welds will normally be tested in the as welded condition however where there is
reasonable cause to suspect the presence of defects it may be necessary to
prepare the surface by grinding.
8. LIGHTING
A minimum white light intensity of 1000 Lux (100 fc) at the test surface is required
during the examination and evaluation of indications. The light intensity, natural or
supplemental white light source (such as LED or fluorescent bulb), shall be
measured with a white light meter prior to the evaluation of indications or a verified
light source shall be used. Verification of light sources is required to be
demonstrated only one time, documented, and maintained on file.
Light meters shall be calibrated at least once a year or whenever the light meter has
been repaired. If meters have not been in use for one year or more, calibration shall
be done before being used.
9. TEST PROCEDURE
The magnetic field and magnetic particle ink shall be applied as below:
Wet Particles: The magnetizing current shall be turned on after the particles
have been applied. Flow of particles shall stop with the application of
current. Wet particles applied from aerosol spray cans may be applied
before and/or after magnetizing current is applied. Wet particles may be
applied during the application of magnetizing current if they are not applied
directly to the examination area and are allowed to flow over the
examination area or are applied directly to the examination area with low
velocities insufficient to remove accumulated particles.
The magnetic field shall be removed after the termination of MPI ink application.
All tested areas shall be examined at least twice. For the second test the
magnetic field shall be orientated perpendicular to the first test. The magnetized
area shall be considered to be not larger than a circle described through the
contact points with a poles spacing of maximum 200 mm.
10. INSPECTION
Inspection shall commence immediately the detecting medium has been applied
and shall continue during and for a short time after the application of the
magnetic field
- For structural welds of carbon steel: shall satisfy the following criteria
iii. The sum of diameters of piping or porosity is not to exceed 10mm in any
linear 25mm of weld and 20mm in any 300mm length of weld.
iv. The maximum length of a single defect is to be less than 2/3 of the effective
throat of the weld up to a maximum of 20mm.
v. The defect is to be further than three times the larger of its own width or
length from the end of the weld or from an adjacent defect.
- For process piping welds: shall be in accordance with ASME B31.3 paragraph
344.3.2
12. REPORT
The test results shall be reported on a “Magnetic Particle Testing Report” form (see
Exhibit 3). The report shall identify batch numbers of material used.
14. DEMAGNETIZATION
Where residual magnetism in part could interfere with subsequent processing or
usage, the part shall be demagnetized any time after completion of examination.
Demagnetization shall be conducted by using AC Yoke with induced current while
yoke is being moved away from the test object.
APPENDIX 1

Yoke
TEST SEQUENCE:
For wet method
1. Visual inspection, clean the test surface
2. Spray contrast white paint on the test surface
3. Position the yoke on the test surface
4. Apply MPI ink between the poles and magnetize the weld while the ink is flowing away from surface.
5. Inspection and evaluation of indication is taken place while magnetic field is being applied.
6. Reposition the yoke so that the magnetic field is perpendiculars to step 3 above. Repeat step 4, 5 above.
For Dry Method
1. Visual inspection, clean the test surface
2. Position the yoke on the test surface
3. Apply MPI powder between the poles by plastic container blower or blower. Magnetize the weld while the
excess powder is blowing away.
4. Inspection and evaluation of indication is taken while magnetic field is being applied.
5. Reposition the yoke so that the magnetic field is perpendiculars to step 2 above. Repeat step 3, 4, above.
Notes:
- Overlap requirement: At least 1 inch between subsequence magnetisations
- Whenever possible, both surfaces of weld shall be tested.
- If indication is observed, determine whether the indication is caused by discontinuity or irrelevant
indication. This can be done by light grinding, visually inspect the surface and Re-MPI
