Lesson idea implementation:
Students will create an audio recording either discussing the causes and events of the War of 1812
or create and record a song about the events; modeled after why “The Star Spangled Banner” was
written. To create a script or song the students need to know about the topic/why it was written.
Students will work alone or with a partner to create an audio recording. While the students are
creating their scripts/lyrics the teacher will assist students as needed and approve their script/lyrics
before the student(s) record. Students will then share their recordings with the class.

Managing student learning: Instead of just listening to the topic being talked about students will be
explaining the information. This allows students to become active social learners as they are working with the
information not just passively learning it. Students must get their script/lyrics approved before using the tool.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Utilizing the ability to record allows for students to
express themselves in a different way. This is because some students learn better with auditory
forms of teaching. It can also be easier for a student to vocalize their understanding rather than
writing down their understanding where the student might struggle with spelling or other writing
struggles. It also allows for engagement with the topic as students are not only learning the material
but also teaching/talking about the material.
Reflection:
I think this will be exciting for students as they are using the information, they are learning about
creating a recording that explains what they understand. I look forward to listening to the students’
podcasts and songs. This is because it is a way for students to show off what they know in a creative
way.
