Activity 3: Give the meaning of the idiomatic expressions.

1. Mother asked his son to make his bed and not to sleep with his books spread on it.

To make his bed - It means to tidy up or rearrange his sheets and blankets on the bed after
he has slept in it.

2. The teacher singled out education as a vital tool to bridge the gap between the
“haves and the have nots”. Education is a right and not a privilege anyway.

To bridge the gap – To link or connect things in a logical and understanding way; to make
the difference between the two things smaller.

3. If you want to take the risk of losing your job, hire


him.
To take the risk - to do an action without taking consideration about the possibility of a
loss, failure, etc.

4. Hold your tongue if you are not sure about what you are talking
about.
Hold your tongue - To remain silent and not say anything even though you might want to,
because it is in an inappropriate time to say it.

5. That karaoke sound coming from our neighbor is driving me to the wall. I can’t
help but feel vexatious.

Driving me to the wall - Feeling angry or irritated about someone or something in a certain
situation.
