16 Conclusion 19
News reporting involves discovering all relevant facts, selecting and presenting the
important facts and weaving a comprehensive story. Reporting involves hard work,
which in turn involves stamina and patience. The main function of journalistic
profession is news reporting. Reporters who are assigned to find the facts must have a
‘nose for news News has been described as “a report of recent or current event that
has an impact on society or it is the previously unknown information”. It is an
accurate account of the event that creates interest among a large number of people.
People are eager to read about news of well-known personalities, place, things, and
events. Jesse Ventura said: “THE NEWS USED TO BE TO REPORT FACTS AND
ALLOW YOU TO MAKE THE DECISION”. Media are the communication outlets
or tools used to store and deliver information or data. Media is treated as fourth estate
and the watch dog of society. Some commentators have introduced the idea of the
fifth estate being social media or the internet. Early news was presented to local
populations through the print media .The earliest newspapers date to 17 th century
Europe when printed periodicals began rapidly to replace the practice of hand-writing
newssheets. History of newspaper in India begins with the Bengal Gazette (1780) the
first Newspaper in India, published by James Augustus Hickey.
Radio news made its appearance in the 1920s. World’s first commercial radio station,
KDKA, began broadcasting in Pittsburgh in 1920. Radio Broadcasting started in India
in the early 1920’s. The first programme was broadcast in 1923 by the Radio club of
Bombay. All India Radio was the first autonomous public service broadcaster founded
by the government of India.

MY EXPERIENCE
7
MARSHALL MCLUHAN
Before 100 years Marshall Mcluhan put forward the idea that communication will
become a boom in the society. In 1964, he published a book named
‘Understanding media, extensions of man’, in which he presented different
ideologies. The first theory was that ‘medium itself is a message This sums up a
much deeper
communication theory, which is that the medium through which we choose to
communicate holds as much, if not more, value than the message itself. Simply. It
means that the way that we send and receive information is more important than the
information itself.
The book is no longer “King” says Marshall Mcluhan. Television has transformed
the world into an interconnected tribe he calls a “global village” There is an
earthquake and no matter where we live, we all get the message. And today’s
teenager, the future villager, who feels especially at home with our new gadgets-the
telephone, the
television will bring our tribe even closer together, today everything is available
under an umbrella. In short, Global Village, the world viewed as a community in
which distance and isolation have been dramatically reduced by electronic media
The third idea presented by him is the ‘Electrical age Development of technology,
advent of internet striked the modern world a lot. People changed a lot from the past.
Eg: WiFi, lifi, smart phones, digital photography, printing.
His theory was important because he argued that the application of the new
communication media in people’s lives would not only bring changes in the way
people communicate with each other. But also would bring radical changes in all
human affairs. In The medium is the message he points out that: The medium, or
process, of our time-electric technology is reshaping and restructuring patterns of
social interdependence and every aspect of our personal life.

STORY STRUCTURES
A structure of a news story is based on the style a writer applies. Styles are divided in
to many types.
The most popular structure for news stories is the inverted pyramid. In the inverted
pyramid, the information is arranged in the descending order of importance. The most
important material is placed at the beginning of the story, and less important material
follows. Succeeding paragraphs explain and support the lead.
2. Pyramid format
It is just the reverse of the inverted pyramid structure. The least information at first
and important information at the end. Here happens a shuffling process,
3. Narrative format
This is the chronological description of the events) And not according to the priority
of events. Depending upon the chronological order of the events, we arrange the
material. And during editing, repeated reading is essential and it is done by the team.
4. Hourglass format
Hourglass structure involves both the pyramid structure and the narrative structure
of news writing. The first part of the article focuses on the facts of the story and
compliments the facts by giving a narrative version in the second part.
One or more paragraphs that explain the news value of the story, particularly in
news features Writing a nut graph is called nut shelling and the writers are called nut
shellers It justifies the story by telling why they should care.
It provides a transition from the lead and explains the lead and its connection to the
rest of the story. It often tell readers why the story is timely It often includes
supporting material that helps readers see why the story is important
9
6. Diamond model
A reporter using this structure would begin with an anecdote, introducing a character
whose experience illustrates what the story is about. This structure often uses nut
graph to explain why the story matters. For example, a reporter might begin a story
about a new AIDS treatment by introducing a patient who needs the treatment and
then describe the experiment drug and how it works.
7. Organic structure
8. Five boxes
Pulitzer winner Rick Bragg of The New York Times says he doesn’t outline his
stories, but he does preach the value of the “five boxes” method of story organization.
*The first box, the lead, contains the image or detail that draws people in the story.
*The third box begins with a new image or detail that resembles a lead and precedes
the bulk of the narrative.
*The fourth box contains material that is less compelling but rounds out the story.
*The fifth, and last, box is the “kicker,” an ending featuring a strong quote or
image that leaves the reader with a strong emotion.
A form of multimedia storytelling in which the main story is text presented as a linear
narrative, while links to elements like videos, photo slideshows, maps and graphics
are placed like ornaments hung on a tree.
10
NEWS VALUES/ELEMENTS OF NEWS
1. Proximity
Proximity is the nearness, Stories about events and situations in one's home
community gre more worthy than events that takes place far away.
2. Timeliness
Timeliness means freshness in news. Recent events have higher news value than
earlier happenings. If you are providing breaking news instantly, so it has worth.
3. Prominence
People are naturally curious about those people who are famous or have power. For
the same occurrence, people in the public eye have higher news value than obscure
people.
4.Consequence/Impact
The number of people whose lives will be influenced in some way by the subject of
the story. The impact of the story quickly establishes the importance of the piece to
reader, and the consequences for the reader themselves.
5.Rarity
News can be weird, or odd. Or something that rarely ever happens. If something is
out of the ordinary, it may be newsworthy just because it is unusual or weird.
6. Human Interest
This news value deals with the emotional qualities of a story. It presents people and
their problems, concerns, or achievements in a way that brings about interest,
sympathy or motivation in the reader. Does the story evoke an emotional response?
7.Conflict
It represents a story in which two or more forces are in opposition to each other.
Events are more newsworthy when they involve disagreement.
.8. Superlatives/Extremes
Reporters love extremes or superlatives: the first, the last, the best, the worst, the
biggest. the smallest. If your story contains one, highlighting it will usually make it
more newsworthy.
9. Scandal
More value is attributed to stories pertaining to issues or topics that are in the
spotlight of public concern rather than to issues about which people care less.
11
HEADLINES
Functions of Headlines
A good headline should be accurate, clear, grammatically correct, strong, active, fresh
and immediate. It should catch the reader’s attention.
● Attract the attention of readers
● To summarise the story
● Depict the mood of the story
● It helps to set the tone of newspapers
● It indicates relative importance of a story
□ Keep it short
□ It must be in active voice and positive Never split names between the lines of
headlines.
12
□ Headlines should be sharp and convey the essence of the story._A
headline should speak
□ A headline should stimulate the readership and led you read the story beneath
you.
□ Know where to capitalize the letters Use commonly use abbreviation.
□ Use punctuation marks properly → Articles such as ‘the’, ‘an’ and ‘a’are
generally not used in headlines
□ Be it up to date
Writing news story isn’t particularly difficult. It does take practice and not everyone
will be an expert but if you follow the guidelines below you should be able to create
effective news items without too much stress. The Six “W”s and the “H” Who?
Whom? What? Where? When? Why? How?
In general, news stories are organized using the inverted pyramid style, in which
information is presented in descending order of importance
13
LEAD
In the field of journalism, these three terms, the lead, body and conclusion, without
these terms, a reporter or an editor can do nothing. Because these are the basic
structure or basic format we follow to arrange the collected information. And the
subeditor arrange these information through these three steps.
Lead is the beginning portion or the introductory part of the news story. It is the first
three sentences or the first paragraph of a news story. The lead is also known as the
‘intro’.
It is actually difficult to arrange lead. It is through the lead, a reporter prepares almost
the entire information to readers. In case of visual/audio format another format
connecting with this process takes place there.
Usually we follow inverted pyramid style for preparing news stories. The intro
attracts the reader to our side. By reading the intro a person decides whether to
continue to read or not. If the reader finds no interest in the intro, most probably they
will change over to some other pages of news. So a good preparation should be given
while preparing a lead for a news story. So it is the responsibility of a reporter to catch
the readers attention throughout a news story
14
NEWS SOURCES
A journalist should maintain a contact book having list of people categorized and
carrying vital information. Sources of news can be listless, some sources are:
Academic journals:
Art groups:
Apart from providing information about forthcoming events, art groups can generate
rows about funding or controversial subject matter.
Campaigns:
Campaigners who want to influence public opinions on subjects ranging from animal
rights to environment are likely to come up with opinions or events that might
generate news stories Commerce and trade: Business organizations can be useful
source of news stories or comments about anything from interest rates, shares to
shopping Also, consumer stories are a valuable source of information for evaluating
the image of an organization.
15
Council press offices:
Court hearings:
Court reporters dip in and out several courtrooms and look for cases that fit the news
values Hence, the importance of good contacts with the court staff, police, solicitors
and others should be realized. Some reporters will also go after background materials
like quotes from victims and relatives.
Entertainment industry:
The government news network produces vast numbers of news release on behalf of
the government department and agencies on a regional and national basis. It also
handles ministerial and royal visits.
Outbreak of serious diseases, funding crisis, hospital closures and health promotion
are all examples of news stories that arise from health authorities. Hospitals are source
of good news stories carrying news about cures, new treatments and general
triumph-over-tragedy.
Libraries:
It is hard to believe but the truth is that, not everything is available on the internet.
Libraries retain a useful role in providing access to reference books, company reports,
local history achieves: indexes of local societies, community notice boards and so on.
16
News Agencies:
They are the foot soldiers of journalism at a national and international level, allowing
media organization to cover stories in areas where they have few or no staff.
Agencies keep a check on offices and local bodies and look out for news stories here:
Newspapers, radio, TV, big news media houses depend largely on news agencies
for general news coverage.
News releases:
They are the point of reference for the journalists while covering an event. Badly
written news releases can be a waste of time for both journalist as well as for the
organization.
Notice boards:
Notices in shops, offices, libraries, colleges and elsewhere may also become a
source of news.
Other media:
Newspapers monitors other newspapers, TV, radio, news sites on the web and in
turn each medium monitors other media.
People:
Potential stories can be suggested by people you meet at work, rest and play. This can
be include when somebody mentioning that they have seen a police car parked in their
street to other substantial information provided by the common people.
Political parties:
Contacts within parties can be a fruitful source about anydisagreements, splits, rows,
while party spokespeople will let you know about the selection of candidates or any
launch of policy initiatives.
PR Companies:
This provides the journalists and us a peek in to the media world every day. So it is a
major source for the journalists.
17
Press Conferences:
They are likely to be held to announce the results of official inquiries or to unveil
new appointments.
Universities:
They are a source of a huge range of stories, whether it is ground breaking research,
an unusual degree scheme or an ethical argument.
PCR
It is also known as the gallery in which the composition of the outgoing programme
takes place.
