I. Description:

This study was conceived primarily to help minimize if not to totally solve the

problem in the workplace of the researchers, Lamao Elementary School, Romblon,

Romblon, with low MPS in Mathematics.

As noted by Vice President and Secretary of Education Sara Z. Duterte, the

Department will revitalize its Reading, Science and Technology, and Math programs as

part of the MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa agenda on February 2,

2023. The improvement of literacy and numeracy programs and the integration of

‘peace competencies’ will be some of the priorities of the Department of Education

(DepEd) in making the K to 12 curriculums relevant to produce job-ready, active and

responsible citizens. DepEd’s numeracy program as stated in ELLN (Early Language

Literacy and Numeracy Program: Professional Development Component) aims to

develop in Filipino children literacy and numeracy skills and attitudes which will

contribute to lifelong learning. More specifically, it aims to improve reading and

numeracy skills of Kinder to Grade 3 pupils, following K to 12 Basic Education

Curriculum, and to establish a sustainable and cost-effective professional development

system for teachers as stated in DepEd Order No. 12, Series 2015.

This action research targets to utilize mental board game to develop pupils’

numeracy skills. The proposed intervention conceived in this action research proposal is

the utilization of Mental Board Game Intervention. The authors of this intervention

believed that implementing it is a solution to enhance the performance of Grades 2 and

3 of Lamao Elementary School on basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication. The

basic operation in numeracy is important material to be taught so that students

understand other numbers of material. This intervention will develop critical thinking,

memorization, love of numbers, sense of responsibility and resilience.

The researchers will provide Mental Board Game. This is a set of numbers up to

100 printed in cardboard paper. Chips with number will also be provided. The teacher

will flash numbers to be solved mentally. The respondents will utilize the Mental Board

Game. Whoever answers quickly get the point. Every day, the teacher will flash at least

20 items. The learner who will get the highest score for the day will be given a badge.

Rewards every weekend will be given to those who earned the most numbered

badges. Basic operation in Mathematics like addition, subtraction, and multiplication will

be enhanced on this intervention.

Involving parents in their child’s development of numeracy skills will certainly

bring positive outcomes for children. Parents may need support on how best to support

their child with numbers. To fully engage the parents into this intervention, researchers

will conduct demonstration on how to perform this intervention at home as follow-up to

gain mastery. This activity will also develop strong family bond among parents and

children. On this modern age, some of the family neglect to spend time with their

children.

II. Methodology:

A. Schedule

The recommended time for the implementation of this intervention program is

1:00 to 1:30 in the afternoon. (The teacher may change the schedule according to the

E. Procedure

they can get involved in it.

2. Inform the pupils about the program and orient them on the methodologies.

3. This intervention should be done individually.
