Geotechnical calculations for the Sump

Sump size considered is LxBxD = 14m x 14m x 5m

Excavation for sump is considered as 5.5m

The soil profile at the location

GL, RL=63m
Stratum I – Medium Stiff clay
 =9kN/m3
su = 54kPa
RL=57.5m
Stratum II – Very Stiff to hard clay
 =10kN/m3
su = 96kPa
mv =0.0004m2/kN

RL=45.5m

With 5.5m excavation, the sump will be founded onto the Stratum II (very stiff to hard
clay).

Total induced pressure due to self weight of sump and filled up water = 68.5kPa
~ 70KpA
Bearing capacity at the depth of 5.5m for the foundation size 14m x 14m = 270 kPa
>70 kPa

Weight of soil removed by excavation = 5.5 x 9 = 49.5 kPa ~ 50kPa

Net increase in pressure at the base of sump = 70 - 50 =20kPa

Settlement computation –
Total settlement (immediate and long term consolidation) under the net pressure of
20kPa = 28 mm
< 35mm
Net bearing pressure at 5.5m depth corresponding to 35mm settlement = 25kPa
