outcome, sample space.

From your previous lesson, you have learned the different key concepts of
inequalities in a triangle, and parallel and perpendicular lines. It enables you to
communicate mathematical thinking with coherence and clarity in formulating,
investigating, analyzing, and solving real-life problems involving triangle inequalities,
and parallelism and perpendicularity of lines using appropriate and accurate
representations.
In this module, you will learn more about the basic concepts in probability and
the different methods in writing the number of occurrences of an outcome of an
experiment.
In nature, there are lots of occurrences like tossing a coin or rolling a die, or to
simple things like “will it rain today?” whose results cannot be predicted with certainty
or conviction in advance, but the set of all the possible outcomes or result is known to
us.

These are what we call random phenomena or random experiments. Probability
There are certain terms that you need to clarify its meaning before you go any further.
Examples:
1. Tossing of coin
2. Rolling a die
3. Spinning of a Wheel
Sample space (S) is the set of all the possible outcomes or sample points of an
experiment.

Look at the example below:
“King” is not a sample point because there are four Kings in the deck of 52
cards which are four (4) different sample points. King of Hearts is a one of these
sample points.
Event (E) is any set of one or more outcomes satisfying some given conditions.
Examples:
1. Tossing a coin
Experiment - tossing a coin
Sample space – {H, T}
The event (E) that a Tail is obtained = {T}

3. Rolling a Die
Experiment - rolling a die
Sample space – {1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
The event (E) that an even number is obtained = { 2 , 4 , 6}

Activity 2: In a Box!
A box contains the letters of the English alphabet. A letter is picked at random from
the box. Write the sample points in each of the following.

A. The following are the basic concepts in probability:
1. Experiment is a chance process that leads to a well-defined result.
2. Outcome is the result of a single trial of an experiment.
3. Sample space is the set of all the possible outcomes or sample points.

2. Before leaving home, Kristian packed his bag with the essentials he needs for the
new normal. Below are the items on his bag:

f. cologne
g. face shield
h. notebook
2. The school prepares the students for disasters that may come along while they are
in school or at home. They should be prepared with a survival kit bag which is
shown below
List a sample space of the things inside the survival kit bag. Mention at least 7
things.
