INTRODUCTION

Friendship is a beautiful relationship that we must always appreciate. Friends are

people who are always by our side through our ups and downs. Some people said, ‘there are
family, there are friends, and then, there are friends that become family’. This quote shows
2

that friend also can become our own family. However, there are times that we tend to forget
to appreciate our friends. Therefore, we have come out of an initiative to organize a small
event called “Friendship Day” for our community service activity.

On this day, we will pick any random person that is walking with their friends to read
a prepared script to their friends a sign of appreciation. We are excited to carry out this
project because we are expecting various expressions such as shy, sad, touched and others.

On this project, we carry out for all students in IIUM from all Kulliyyah that willingly
to attend and contribute with our project. This project was conducted as to give opportunity to
students to express their feelings and strengthen their friendship relationship through this
program. In addition, this service is not only to serve the appreciation and love for the
relationship alone, but also can have the chance to say anything to your friends what they
want to say. It can be more interesting and encourage them to burst out what they were going
to tell all this while.

Furthermore, this project also can be seen as the event to seek student’s perception on
this program. They maybe are not aware that the topic of ‘Friendship Day’ is essential for all
students in IIUM. This is because friendship is part of our life in university. Wherever we go,
friends are always there to help us and whenever we need help, we tend to call our friends
and people that are near to us. As we learned about friendship, friends are an integral and
important part of life as they contribute heavily in what a person makes of his or her life. This
is the reason why Islam also speaks about friendship. Islam acknowledges the importance of
friends in one’s life. Therefore, Islam emphasizes on the selection of right friends.

Last but not least, our project got a warm welcome from students from different
kulliyyah, different countries and even our lecturer, Dr Suzana. It can be said that friendship
is not only about the same traits, same character, same country but we can mix with any
people around us to build the best friends relationship in our lives.

OBJECTIVES

1. To seek student’s perception on quality of their friendship relationship among IIUM

students.
2. To encourage students to express their feeling towards friendship relationship among
IIUM students
3

3. To enable students using love appreciated words towards their friends among IIUM
students.

of the bureau. The program manager of this program is Hanis Nabilah Khairunnisa Binti M
Ahmad Kamal and assisted by Norhafizah Binti Mohammad Din who played the role of
Assistant of Program Manager. In order to ensure this program will run successfully, we had
built some bureaus which are Media and Publication Team, Special Task Team, Video Team
and also Report Team. Every each bureau was led by one head and also their assistant and the

For the Media and Publication Team, the head of the bureau was Hanis Nabilah and
her assistant was Norhafizah and the team members were Amira Athirah, Fatini and Farah.
Their tasks were to design the banner and button badges as well as making viral messages to
gather the participants for our community service project.

Furthermore, for Special Task Team, the team is led by Nur Saadah as the head and her
assistant Zatil Farahiyyah. Then, the team members were Ainnur, Linda, Miss Ernie, and Nur
Amirah. The members were given the task to buy some candies as the token of appreciation
for the participants, making the design, printing as well as laminating the bookmarks and also
ordering the banner and button badges.

Next, the other team is Video team where the head of this team was Haslinda and her
assistant Hanis. The members of this team consisted of Nur Saadah, Haslinda, Nur Amirah,
Farah and Hanis where they were asked to record the process and progress before and during
the project was done and they also have to prepare the video for the class presentation.

Then, the last team is the Report team where the head was Ainnur and Zatil Farahiyah as
her assistant. Their role was to complete the written report that will cover all the details and
aspects for this project and submit the full report to the lecturer which is Dr. Suzana. They
also need to make sure that the report will be free from grammatical errors and also need to
abide by the deadline of the submission date. The members were Hafizah, Miss Ernie, Fatini
and also Amira Athirah.

MEMBERS’ EXPERIENCE

When Dr. Suzana gave us this task, our group tried to discuss this project face-to-face,
but due to the time restriction, it is very hard to do it because not all of our group members
were free at the same time. So, we tried to generate some ideas on what project we should
conduct. On 26th September 2019, exactly after EDC 1352 class, we had our first meeting to
decide which project we will work on. The majority of the group members agreed to work on
‘Friendship Day’. I was so excited and can’t wait to conduct this community service. But at
the same time, I was afraid that if our project will not receive great support from IIUM
community. After all, all of the preparation for this project were going well as all of our
group members played their roles in ensuring the preparations are complete. The other
limitation that we were facing was to decide the date to conduct this community service. At
first, we tried our best to conduct it before mid-semester break, but we could not do it
because of other commitments that few of our group members need to commit, such as
KOED Sports and Arts Day, IIUM Sports Carnival and other program at school. Due to these
things, we have to move the date to conduct our community service at the first week after
mid-semester break.
On 12th November 2019, it was D-day. I was the one in-charge to hang the banner at
the riverside together with my friend, Hanis. It was so hard to find a suitable place where
people can see our banner because of other programs’ banners that were already there. After
15 minutes, my friend and I decided to hang the banner between a street lamp and a tree,
whereby people who are going through the bridge will see our banner clearly. At that
moment, the feeling of not getting a great support from IIUM community suddenly came and
haunted me again. This was because, at that time, I saw that there are few people who read
our banner and then chuckled and ignored it. But, with my team’s spirit and motivation, I
tried to ignore all of the evil assumption. I was shocked and hard to believe for myself that
there were so many people coming to support us, and I assume that they are more than 60
people. Not just students, there are also IIUM staff that come and join our community service
such as from OSEM. I feel so touched by the warm support that we received.
As I am a very soft-hearted person, I got teary-eyed for a few times when I saw the
participants’ confession to their friend as they also cried to each other. It is such a beautiful
moment to watch when they were expressing their love to each other and also reflected the
good and bad memories that bring them together through the ups and downs. Not to forget, I
also became one of the participants as one of my best friends came to support me. I did the
confession to her, and we both burst into tears. During that time, I just realized that even
though I have been friends with her since 5 years ago, I was rarely being there for her as I
was so busy with own life, and I rarely said sorry to her even though I had done so many
wrongs to her. I expressed everything to her, and that was the time that I burst into tears
because I felt that I rarely appreciate my friends.
As a conclusion, what did I get from this community service is, even though friend is
not part of our family, but we are like siblings without blood relation. When we have
problems, we do not always share our problems with our family members. Friends are just
like our second family, and one of the important figures in our lives. We do not always
appreciate them without realizing it, so I think that our group has made a good decision to
10

conduct this friendship day. By this project, I am hoping that people will become aware to
always appreciate their friends, thank them, take care of their feelings, always be there for
them and forgive each other for every mistake.

Since the day when Dr Suzana assigned us with the assignment, I was a little bit
worried because I have never planned an event in IIUM, Gombak. All the experienced that I
have since the first year of degree life is just as the subcommittee in any program that was
held. So, the work is not as tough as the mastermind of the program. But for this course Civic
and Citizenship Education (EDC 1352), we were required to come out with a community
service that will give value among the IIUM community. The progress of our assignment
started by constructing a group. Luckily, I got to be in the same group with people that I feel
comfortable to work with. In our group, we have 11 members which 10 of us are students of
Guidance and Counseling while one of us is from Teaching English as a Second Language
Course.

As a group, there were a few times where we sat together and brainstorm on the ideas
for the community service and the most highlighted ideas were from our group member,
Hanis Nabilah Khairunnisa. She came up with the idea to have a ‘Friendship Day’ where on
that day, we provide a platform for IIUM students to express their gratitude and love towards
their friend who is the one we depend on as the university student. After consulting with our
lecturer, Dr. Suzana, she approved and even compliment the idea. At that moment, I felt very
happy as the progress of planning the community service run smoothly. After that, we
straight away prepared for the items that are needed for the ‘Friendship Day’. At first, we had
an issue whether to make the banner for the community service on our own or just design and
print it out. But the majority of us vote to just design and print it out because we are lacking
of time. So, all of us agreed to follow the voice of the majority. The process of preparation
turned out to be so well as for the design and all the goodies for the participants.
Alhamdulillah. But, some difficulties have arisen when we were selecting the date to conduct
our community service. Some of us had a lot of commitment for their society, so, we have
extended the date for our community service twice until we got the exact date where all of the
members are free which is on Tuesday, 12th November 2019 at 3:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

During the ‘Friendship Day’, we started to prepare for the venue a little bit late
because before that, we had class with Dr Khalijah. So, right after our class ended, we
straight away went to the Riverside and set up the corner where we hung the banner and
arranged the goodies. When I started to approach students who passed by, I felt so scared
because naturally I am an introvert who rarely talk to strangers. So, some of my group
members gave me moral support to fight with my social anxiety and unexpectedly, I managed
to approach and talked to a number of strangers during our community service. Before we
start our community service, the only thing that we were scared of was the cooperation and
participation of the students and staff. I was worried if our community service got no
response from the targeted participants. But, opposite things happened where the students wre
well cooperated in joining our community service. We only targeted 20 to 30 participants to
join our community service but the participants that come to our ‘Friendship Day’ are even
more than our expectation. I felt so blessed because the students were giving their best
cooperation and interested in joining our community service. There were participants who
cried, laughed and even touched by how their friends feel towards them.

Last but not least, I have learned a lot, especially in terms of conducting a community
service and the value of friendship. I learned that, love is not just how you show but love also
12

needs to be told. Some people feel the love through action, but most of us will feel more
loved just by listening to the three magic words, ‘I Love You’.

I was really glad to be part of my team in which I can get new priceless experience
and get to know other IIUM community. Our title of community service is about “Friendship
Day” and the place we contributed to this service at Riverside IIUM which the target people
were the ones who were walking with their partner. Before this service happened, we as a
team divided job scope for each member, so my part was doing the banner. Here, I learned
again on how to edit the poster using Photoshop. It is because before this I had already
learned to use Photoshop, but I forgot it. However, I can do it now and remember this skill
again with the guidance from my teammates. They were really helpful and awesome team.
We contributed to this community service together at the beginning and end of our project.

Besides, after we were done preparing for the day of community service, we also
made a meeting to set our date, day and theme. Here, I learned that communication is needed
for people to voice out their opinions or suggestions. It is because to make everyone satisfied
and all the suggestions will be considered depending on the free time of every person in the
team so that it will be fair for everyone. When the community service for “Friendship Day”
started, we all started to approach people. I also approached the people and then I got pairs of
friends, so I explained the rules and what they have to do with his or her friends. So, to make
it easy, we already prepared the script so that he or she can just read the script to her or his
friends. From that, I learned that having a good friend is a gift from Allah SWT because not
all people have a close friend. It can be seen even though she or he has lots of friends, that
does not mean that she or he has a close friend in which the person who can share their
problems with.

Furthermore, I also experienced on how to approach the people around when doing
this community service. I truly said that it might be hard to approach people if we do not have
good communication skills. It is because some people might ignore it even though we already
approach and tell them what is “Friendship Day” all about. It happens when we do not have
good communication skills. Thus, we should need to approach and explain the purpose of it
with confidence, so that they do not doubt us. Other than that, I learned on how to engage
with people. I feel so happy because I can make some of them believe and trust her or his
friends more. Some of the participants also cried when they confessed their guilt towards her
friend. Here, I feel so grateful to see all of it in front of my eyes because sometimes it makes
me more appreciate having a close friend. It shows that all people need love in their life, so to
have it, we first have to spread the love to other people.

To sum up, I am grateful that our community service ran smoothly. I also can
strengthen my relationship between my teammates and the IIUM community. Other than that,
I also tried to do it with my friend whereby I read the script of “Friendship Day” to her.
Unexpectedly, she was touched and I also felt the same way. Sometimes we do not
understand them and we just want other people to understand our feelings. That is why some
people always feel and think the opposite way in which stands with ego respectively. As we
know that friends are gifts from Allah SWT to us. It is because when we are far away from
our family, a friend is the place that we can share our problems and spend our time together.
We also have to be wise to find a friend so that she or he does not take advantage of us
because we need a friend all the time rather than the time to have fun. Lastly, I appreciate the
14

people who came into my life and I trust Allah SWT and His plan that there is wisdom
behind it. Thank you for making me as your friend and I love all of you.

When it comes to the time for me to share the experience while conducting this project. For
me, it was a memorable moment. First of all, I would like to wish my gratitude with my very
helpful groupmates who were handling this project together. Sometimes I feel that I might
not have contributed much to the group, however, all of us had done our part successfully.

When preparing for this project, I felt quite excited to see the reaction of the public regarding
this project. I also felt afraid if there is no one will join our small programme. However, it is a
relief for me that we managed to get the number of participants more than our target number.
Throughout the process of preparing for this event, we prepared a few gifts for those who
participate in our event which are a button badge, a pack of sweets and a handmade
bookmark. Somehow, the gift that we prepared were out of stock quite faster than we expect.
This shows that we were really getting the support from the other students while carrying out
this event.

Unfortunately, I could only feel the joy of carrying this project with my groupmates for just a
short period of time because I had a class to attend. Even though it is just a short time for me
to help and spend time with the team, I can feel that all of us were very happy to do this
project. There was a feeling of satisfaction when we saw the reaction of our participants was
just like what we have expected. While they were confessing their love of friendship with our
prepared script, somehow we also could feel their sincerity and we could see that they were
valuing their friendship.

Overall of my feelings, I can say that it’s a mixed feeling where I can see happiness,
sincerity, sadness, friendship love and many more lovely feelings. I am glad that we chose to
do this activity because I can learn something from this activity. One of it is friends not only
those who stay with you when you are happy, friends also a person who stays with you when
you are sad, feeling broken and others. And sometimes, we may fail to see our friends’
sacrifice for them and the only time when we got the express to each other in an activity like
this, then we realize how big a friends’ role in our life and how are we going to survive
without our friends’ help and support.

As a conclusion for my experience, I am very grateful for this experience to carry out this
project with my supportive and hardworking groupmates. Experience like this is something
that is more valuable than money because there are elements of humanity. Lastly, I would
like to congratulate all of my group mates for making this project a success and I seek
forgiveness from them for my weakness that was shown while handling this activity with
them.

During this project for community service, we conducted the event of “Friendship
Day”. This project is part of our assignment on subject Civic and Citizenship Education
(EDC 1352), that was led by our dedicated lecturer Dr. Suzana. This is my first time
experience to do the community service and I have learned a lot from this event. At first, my
group and I have difficulties in dealing with the topics and what service should our group do.
For the first meeting, we tried to brainstorm and suddenly the best topic came out and we
consulted Dr Suzana and the topic was accepted. We started to plan and had discussion
through WhatsApp because we were getting busy with work and assignments for the other
subjects. Unfortunately, we do not have time to meet as a group, but we had it for two or
three times before our project proceeded nicely.

From what I experienced through our project, there are a lot of things that I have
learned from this project. First things first, I learned about the importance of friendship
relationship while doing this project. I saw many people feel touched and cry when it comes
to the conflict and problem through friendship relationships. Somehow, I thought that people
would ignore the small things that friends do, but when I interfered with this project then I
know how sensitive a friend is. The small things will become a big deal to certain
relationship. Moreover, I also learned about how happy they are when the relationship is
going smooth and no conflict present.

Sometimes, people cannot tell about bad traits of a person because they are afraid that
the person might feel something that is not good. But through this project, some couple of
friends were stating how her friend was treating her make the relationship a little bit apart. It
is good to have this program as we can strengthen the bond between them and experienced
many things.

Additionally, I also experienced on how to introduce and communicate to people to

join our project. Many people could not join our project due to the class, the event and their
own work. But for us, this situation makes us more energized to find more people to join and
complete our project even in the afternoon where the temperature was getting hot. We tried
our best to do this project effectively as we want our community service (friendship
relationship) having a benefit throughout this programme. Finally, I feel so much blessed to
have an opportunity to experience this project as I am also having the best team member that
do work and make the project came so well.

Overall, I enjoyed this community service that I have never experienced in my life before.
Being in this project makes me so much love and grateful to have this best opportunity in this
semester. I acknowledge that friends are important to our life as they can do many beneficial
things to polish our mirror of life. Having a best friend is hard to find as it is not only present
when we need help, but a best friend is part of our family members that can bring us more joy
and happiness to our life. It is much obliged for all my group members that make this project
a success.

My name is Nur Zatil Farahiyah binti Mohd Ruzuan, International Islamic University
Malaysia student majoring in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and minoring
in Moral Education. Since I didn’t get to register Civics and Citizenship Education at the
same time with my friends from the same course, I didn’t get to be with them. Even I
registered the subject later than other students, I still get to be in a group for the community
service project. At first glance, I barely know all the members because we are from different
courses. I am the odd one among them. I may not be among the social butterflies but, thanks
to Allah for giving me a chance to know the girls and now I feel very comfortable to be
around them.

I was invited to join the community service group chatroom on WhatsApp with the
help of Azizah Mysarah who is my close friend and she is from the other group. She
recommended me to join the girls’ group because the members of the group were still 10 in
numbers. I received a text from Hafizah and she invited me into the group chatroom. Our first
meeting was great where I got to see all of the group members together for the first time. It
was on Thursday which is the only day which I have class in the morning. I still remember
how sleepy I was during that time, but my energy suddenly rose because of my energetic
groupmates!

In the meeting, we were divided into two major groups that will be in charge for the
banner and the souvenirs. I was in the souvenirs team and helped them in designing the
button badge. During the mid-semester break, I designed the button badge designs. I tried my
best to stay in touch with them in the group chat since there was no signal for my telco
network in my village and the home Wi-Fi was not working well during that time. I designed
the button badge while I was accompanying my sister at her dental clinic. I was very glad that
they like my design. The design is minimal yet aesthetically pleasing for me.

On the day for our community service project, we worked together to look for pairs or
groups of friends to participate in our Friendship Day project. I feel proud of myself that I
finally got out of my comfort zone and be brave to approach the people at the riverside. I like
to see how the participants’ interaction with each other. I felt a lump in my throat as I that the
participants who were recorded by our lenses were still hugging and walking side-by-side
even after the camera stopped rolling. Indeed, their friendships are precious, and I wish they
actually feel the impact of our project on their bond.

Overall, this Friendship Day thought me another story about the cooperation and
communication between group members. I hope that I can apply what I’ve learnt from the
group members in my daily life. I also learnt about the true meaning of friendship. Since I am
studying in university and living in mahallah, I always feel homesick and missing home. The
existence of my friends fills in the cavity of missing home inside my heart and they create a
new home there too. Just like stated on our banner, the quote “a real friend is one of who
walks in when the rest of the world walks out” makes me realise that the real friends who are
caring towards us will not leave us and we also have to do the same towards them. May our
friendship be blessed by The One and all of us can live together in peace and harmony.

Among the assignments given to us for the subject EDC 1392, Civic and Citizenship
Education taught by Dr. Suzana Suhailawati is community service where we have to hold
something to promote happiness to others. During the class, Dr. Suzana asked all of us to
divide among us evenly to create three different groups. During that time, it was kind of a
war time between us. Everyone wants these people to be in their group and vice versa. For
my group I kind of felt slightly awkward yet excited at the same time because I got the
opportunities to collaborate with some of my classmates that I never had any opportunities to
work together. So, I really do appreciate them.

After several weeks, all of us had our first meeting together and it was on the day that
Dr. Suzana had preview some of the seniors’ footage about their community service day. In
the meeting, all of us decide who will going to be the leader of our group and it was decided
that Hanis Nabilah will act on it. However, after some meeting all of us kind of forget already
who was the leader because all of the members were really productive and I can say that we
have the teamwork to do tasks together, where no one had complained about workload or
something instead we will cover any work that maybe the other members overlooked it. So,
for the first meeting all of us chose to do a ‘Friendship Day’ out of many other proposed
activities. Despite that, at first, I kind of reluctant to go with this activity because I don’t see
the relation between Friendship Day and Community Service Program but after we went for a
consultation with Dr. Suzana then I saw this selected activity with awe. I think it was a really
good activity to raise people’s awareness about the importance and to appreciate their friends.
On the same day, we have already decided the job scope for the rest of the members, where I
belonged to Special Task team together with Amira, Linda, Fatini, Adah and Miss Ernie. My
work, together with Linda was to make the bookmarks together, unfortunately during that
time I was really busy with the preparation for ISC event as I was the President of Mahallah.
Then, I had to cover both internal and external job and it was really tiring. I was kind of had
burnout during those days and could not take part in the making of bookmarks. After I found
out that Linda had decorated, printed and laminated them by herself, I was really guilty with
her yet I kind of feel sad with her decision to do it alone without telling me. At that time, I
was feeling really guilty and I made the decision to do any work left which were cutting and
also attaching the ribbons on each bookmark. Even though it was not a difficult work but at
least I felt that I had contributed by doing something.

Then, after undergoing through one hectic week we had our next meeting which was
to propose the date to do our community service program. At first, we proposed to do before
the mid-semester break however I said that I cannot join during the date because I will be
having my MCLead camp which is a leadership camp for Mahallah Representative
Committees (MRC) and I cannot be excused to not join it as I was the President and I cannot
left my subordinate there without a leader to guide them. So, we proposed to do it after the
mid-semester break. Even after I came back to the UIA we agreed to do it on Tuesday after
the Introduction to Group Counseling class. However, I was really forgotten that at that time I
was assigned to be on duty at the Male Sport Complex to do my work. Fortunately, after I
was discussing this matter with my leader then she excused me to join this community
service. I was really relieved and thankful on that day. Then, all of us really played our role in
the day where we approached people with their friends and we also felt the urge to cry
together with the participant when they did their confession. Many expressions and reactions
20

we received from various people there. It was really fun yet sad at the same time because
nowadays we don’t tend to see the value of friendship among friends that we have made. We
really appreciate the time that Dr. Suzanna came and spend time together with us during our
activities. It actually the moment where it makes our program start to be interesting and
exciting. I would like to give my full appreciation to Dr. Suzzanna to give us the opportunity
to have this program, it will be one of the most exciting things that I had done.

My name is Nur Saadah. This is my experience that I faced with my team through a
lot of challenges, through thick and thin together to make this community service become
successful. When I heard about this project, I think it is interesting as I never do community
service before. Dr Suzanna also suggested we did the community that give impact to all the
community. This is because we never know with our small service can give big impact
toward another.

Then, we gathered and plan some community service that is suitable for us. Some of
us plan to be zoo volunteer. Unfortunately, the fee for being a volunteer there is quite
expensive and same like fee for the tourists. Then, Hanis give suggestion to held Friendship
Day. All of us agree and I find this is interesting and exciting.

So, we discuss and buy button badge, sweet and candy as the goodies for those who
participate in this community service. More special for this community service, team media
designed banner. We also make viral message for all IIUM students to make sure they alert
with our program. Typical as a girl, to make us look attractive we plan to wear white dress
and pink scarves. For me it is cute, because we look like a princess. Off course we should up
to date to make sure people did not scared when we approach them to join our community
service.

The time comes. It is on 12th November which was on Tuesday. The program was
exciting as I expected although we have to face some problems such as a lack of paper of
confessions and lack of camera women. The weather looks promising so we start our project.
Dr Suzanna comes to give us spirit and she said, now you know how hard it is to approach
people. Yes, i admit. It’s so hard to approach people to join our community service. We just
want them to confess to their friends that they love their friends. Some of them were shy to
confess this like us. We have friends and some have best friends but how many times we tell
them that we love them, we cannot live if there are not around us.

One of the scenes that make me touch is when the two boys agree to join this
community service. So, they have to read the script that he appreciates his friend in front of
his friend. They laugh suddenly he cry. Why I feel touched, because the boys rarely drop
their tears for the small things. I also invited my friends to join this. One of them is also cry
and embrace her friend. She whispered and say thanks for being her friends. And one more is
two boys. They are from Celpad. One of them will move to IIUM Pagoh. He said to his
friends thank you for being his friend and always remember him although he is in Pagoh. In
contrast, I also being rejected for some students who refuse to join this service. Some of them
rushed for Asr Prayer. Some ignored us and some were shy to join.

Grabbing this golden chance, I also joined this community service. I confessed to my
best friend than I my tear drops. I don't know why. It is enough for them to know that I love
them too. There is a quote, in friends no sorry no thanks. It means in our friendship, fighting
or having different opinions is a normal things. No need to take it seriously. All of us has our
own weaknesses. Luckily, we still can show some little appreciation for our friends when
they are still alive. In the end, we are having our unique photoshoot. That only my experience
22

held this community service. Thank you my teammate and Dr Suzanna. This is one of my
sweet memories that I will keep in my mind.

When the first time that I heard that our group were assigned to do a community
service, my heart was pounding so hard as I was so happy and excited! We started to make
our first meeting on 26th September 2019, at that time all of us were brainstorming many
ideas on what type of community services that we want to conduct. After having discussion
for so long time, then suddenly, AHA! I almost like screaming in the Musolla when I got the
idea. “How about if we make friendship day? A day whereby we picked a pair of friends
randomly at riverside and ask them to confess to each other? Since it is very rare for friends
having confrontation with each other, right?” And then ... immediately everybody like ...
“Yeah! We can do that!” Alhamdulillah, everybody agreed to do the ‘Friendship Day’.

At that time, I was assigned to be in the banner team. I was so nervous since I have
never made a banner because usually I make posters for any programme but I said to myself,
“It’s okay Hanis! team banner boleh!” During designing the banner, I could feel the pressure
since I could not estimate the exact measurement for the banner. Hence, I contacted One
Heart Printing (which is a company that make banners, bunting) to know the size and the
price for each banner. JACKPOT! I’ve got RM8 just for 2’x4’ banner which is a lot cheaper
than in IIUM. I asked some of my members to survey the banner price in IIUM but for the
smallest banner which the size is 2’x4’ is RM12. Alhamdulillah, One Heart Printing had
offered cheaper price. Next, after we finished designing the banner, we asked for the group
members’ opinions on the banner design and after approval from every member in my group.
I emailed the poster design to One Heart Printing(OHP) … However,... Guess what? The
OHP worker emailed us in order to tell us that our banner’s picture would be very blurry
because of the picture that we sent to them was not in great resolution. I felt very stressed
since after all of hardwork, we have to edit the banner again... but it is okay, I have to be
patient. Thank you to Amirah, Hafizah, Farah and Fatini for always being there for me to
help me to resolve this problem ! T_T

And yes! Alhamdulillah finally we made it. All the stressful situation has blown away
and I thanked Allah for the calmness that He gave to us. During the day that we started
Friendship Day, Alhamdulillah, everything’s good. I could feel the positive vibes and warmth
of friendship love. Although it is quite challenging to approach the passer-by to involve in
our programme, I still felt good since there were some of my classmates would join the
programme, OSEM staff, international students and few students from various kuliyyah. If I
could make the Friendship Day as a painting, I would colour it all in rainbow because during
that day it is full of happiness, sincerity and colourful souls. I was really grateful to be there
since I could see the sincerity in every person’s soul toward their friends despite their genders
or races. For me, friendship is a relationship that is very beautiful, unique and I assume it as
the most beautiful gift from Allah. I believed that the existence of friendship is not always
about I follow you, you follow me. I think that friendship is something that can teach us
about love and life. I believed that without friends, we would be so hard to live since we
could not express things that we wanted to share to anybody.

Last but not least, although my team and I have to face the hardships before
conducted the programme, I agreed that this type of assignment could make students’ bond
their relationship and make students realize how important it is to help society and contribute
in society. I love this subject and this assignment as it teaches me something that is very
24

valuable which is ‘Friendship Love’ J Thank you Dr Suzana for making community service
as one of our assignments, I would remember this thing forever in my life. May Allah always
bless you. I hope that this type of programme would be better in the future to strengthen the
ukhuwwah among the Muslims.

I still remembered Dr Suzana, the instructor assigned each one of us with Community Service
assignment for Civics & Citizenship subject on the initial weeks of the semester. We have
been given the autonomy to choose and form our group project with 10 people in total.
Honestly, it was a good alternative to get close with those people I had never worked with
even we are classmates for 3 semesters. So far, this was the biggest group that I have to work
and cooperate with.

One of the members got inspired by a video played by Dr Suzana in the class, it was about
the day to appreciate your parents or loved ones. Thus, she came out with an idea which was
to have a day where we can appreciate our friends. Yes, it is a Friendship Day! The few
discussions among the group members was conducted before we decide the ultimate day for
the Friendship Day. I can say that each one of the members in the group gave the well
cooperation. We are not against each other and everyone was being open to accept any
opinion that has been voiced out. We did not get any problem in decision-making and
everyone was so considerate and understand each other. In division of tasks, all the group
members showed their enthusiasm as we aimed to make this day will be meaningful day for
us, and even participants. From drafting the project’s idea, deciding the day and date, venue
and all the to-do list on the occasion were well-organized.

I have been assigned as one of the members in banner team who was responsible to design
and send the soft copy of banner. Basically, the design was made by Hanis Nabilah and all
the members wholeheartedly accept and love her artwork. Hence, the only thing left was to
adjust the softcopy design in pdf form. This was labelled as our limitations in making this
project due to the softcopy was rejected twice by the banner worker. Banner team including
me was having a hard time to adjust the size and make sure it fits well with the best
resolution. To highlight, if it was not because of this task I will not take an initiative to learn
and recall for the basic photoshop skills even though I had learned it in the IT subject last
semester. There is no word can describe how much I hate photography and editing skills but I
have no time to complaint, just remind myself “you got a work to do so let’s make it!” I have
referred my closed-cousin to teach me the basic skills, specifically in adjust the resolution for
our banner. Alhamdulillah, finally it works with few attempts and a little pinch of feeling,
people called this as “patience”. Our softcopy design was accepted and we can proceed to the
next steps!

12th November 2019 on Tuesday will be another day to be remembered in my highlight of

semester 3. It was a good moment with my groupmates, classmates and those who willingly
contributed and involved in our community service project, the Friendship Day! Put aside all
the little obstacles, all in all we were just having fun and satisfied with the day. The
cooperation and commitment received by each one of the group members was indescribable.
It was the warmest feeling, honestly. Seeing all the happy faces, united in the beautiful white-
pink attires and welcoming Dr Suzana in the middle of the event. Personally, the 9 th week
added with the community service project just beat up my social interaction limit. I have no
doubt, to approach and talk to male students was a difficult part. I approached one of the pair-
2 male students. My assumption at first, they might feel awkward and reject us, but they were
not. They feel comfortable to do what we have been instructed to them and this was the time I
saw, even male have different way to deliver their gratitude in love and friendship. All in all,
26

the event was successfully done and beyond my expectation. Special gratitude to all my
group mates and Dr Suzana, without all of you this could not happen!

First and foremost, I would like to thank my God, Allah, my family, my lecturer, Dr
Suzana, my group mates and not forget to myself. Alhamdulillah for everything that I learnt
from the beginning of this project until the last of this wonderful journey. This project was
given by our Dr Suzana in her subject which is EDC1352, Civic and Citizenship Education
and this project we called it as a Community Service. It was really an exciting project, one of
the best assignments so far for this semester as it gave a lot of benefits to me and the
community in IIUM itself.

I remembered the first day when our beloved Dr explained briefly about this project, I
was really excited to work on this community service. First, I got assigned in a group. Well,
during that time, I remembered that there are a lot of conflicts in choosing a group members
for each group. I am not going to share how complicated it is because I’m scared that you
might be dizzy after reading my sharing. But, Alhamdulillah, it only took a few minutes to
solve it and Alhamdulillah every one of us in the class got assigned in their own group.

So, after we got into a group, my group mates and I gathered to brainstorm all the
ideas that we can come out for our project. After one by one we share our thoughts on what
we want to do, finally Hanis, one of our members came out with ‘Friendship Day’ theme as
our community service and this theme was a brilliant idea as we can see not only the students
in IIUM can benefit from this project but also the lecturers, the staff and the workers in
IIUM. Therefore, we proceeded with this theme.

Next, we delegated our task. There are banner team, publication and promotion team,
button badge team, bookmark team and also goodies team. I am under button badge team. I
am in charge in dealing with the buyer to buy the button badge and the buyer was so kind and
try their best to post the button badge as soon as possible. I can say that the price also
affordable and I would like to thanks to Ikha for recommend this seller because I am so
satisfied with their service.

Throughout my time of service to the community, I had the opportunity to expose

myself and to welcoming all the IIUM community to join our project. It was a good
experience and I will not forget those moments. It just so meaningful which I learnt a lot from
doing this project. I can see how busy you are in this IIUM, you got that one friend that
support you and help you to go through in your life. Sometimes, your success is not just
because of you but because of your friends too.

In a nutshell, I would like to thank my beloved lecturer for assigning this group
project for us. Here, I would like to share a quote by Maya Angelou, "I have found that
among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver." That's all from me, thank you.

LIMITATION

In any program management, there will be few constraints that could not be avoided.
Hence limitations that can be identified throughout this community service project are, in the
making process of banner that will be used on that day. All group members agreed to have
the banner with the size that has been discussed before we held the program which is in exact
28

4x2 in foot measurement. The small size banner was chosen to cut the budget since it was
only a-day event. However, the major problem occurred a few nights before the group
members in the banner team had a difficulty to send the best quality photo for the banner in
pdf form. The banner seller rejected the banner in its pdf form for a few times due to its low
resolution and it did not fit with the size of the banner that the team has been asking for. It
took a few attempts for the banner seller to accept it.

Other than that, the major problem is the time restriction. Since the team project first
decided to have this event on week 8 all members still have the problem to attend as a whole
and complete members, the proposed date then change to week 9 on tuesday evening. This is
because some of the group members had the other commitments, such as society and
mahallah event, evening class, co-cu class and many more. The pack schedule and redundant
with many things at the same time and day made it harder for all members to gather for a
discussion and ultimately, for the d-day which is Friendship Day.

As each of the group members were just finished the class on 3.30pm, we were
rushing to set up before the event starts. During the event, all members do not have enough
time to delegate tasks and job scope thus it can be seen that the event was not well-organized.
The task consists of recording, distribution of goodies and bookmarks, approaching and give
instructions to participants. Nevertheless, some of the passers-by tend to discooperate with
group members even though the instruction for the project had been explained before. As for
setting’s event, the group members could not find the right venue to hang the banner at the
place. The setting of event as stated was at the Riverside, thus each one of us has to beware
with the unpredictable weather because it usually rains in the evening on that time.

RECOMMENDATION

Based on our experience in managing this project, we can list out a few
recommendations for future reference if programs like this have to be done again. One of the
suggestions is to choose a proper time of the day for the program. A lot of participants had to
rush to classes and mosque for Asr prayer because the program was held from 3.30 p.m
onwards. The choice of time also need to be more appropriate for the members so that they
will not have to rush from class to the venue in a very short time.

In addition, the community service was done in Week 9 which is one of the weeks
that are hectic which we have to a lot of works and submissions to do. Therefore, it is more
preferable for this kind of programmes to be done before the mid-semester break so that both
parties that will be involved which are the members of group and participants will be free
during that time.

Since our community service was done at the Riverside where there is no shelter
nearby in order to get protection from the rain, we were exposed to possible bad weather. It is
recommended for the future programme to be done at a spot in the university compound that
is sheltered so that the programme can be done even when it is raining.

Next, it is recommended to divide the team into small groups during the program.
Each group must consist of one person to manage the recording, one person to approach the
participants and one person will be the one who will manage the token of appreciation. By
using this method, the program will run in a smooth manner.
29

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, through realizing this community service project, many areas had been
stressed and it was decided that it is important to conduct this project as it plays an effective
effort made to counter the need for those who have something to cherish or confess to their
own friends. This program project was focusing on the exposure of one’s awareness of the
need to appreciate their friendship. As we know when the awareness instilled in people
towards the need to appreciate their peers, then, it will help them in strengthening the bond
that had been created for a recent time and also give the opportunity to confess whatever they
want towards their friends. Besides, people nowadays do not really or less value their
relationship with peers due to the lack of awareness of their peers’ supports and sacrifices. A
brief confession and effort will help the relationship to become closer, joyful and exciting.
Thus, this will be able to boost their life satisfaction. So, this program project will encourage
people to appreciate their own friends more and make the bond between them becomes
stronger. Therefore, this program is really encouraged to be done annually in order to allocate
one specific time where we appreciate our friends as this might be something that is really
rare to be done even to the people who had been friends since their childhood.
