LESSON PLAN in SCIENCE 7
(Layers of the Earth’s Atmosphere)

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of 60 minutes, the students are expected to:

a. Define the meaning of the atmosphere

b. Enumerate and identify the layers of the atmosphere

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Layers of the Earth’s Atmosphere

B. Reference: Asuncion, Alvie J., et al. 2017. Science 7. Learners Material. First
Edition.
C. Materials: laptop (sorts of picture), projector, video clips.

III. DEVELOPMENT OF THE LESSON

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. ROUTINE ACTIVITIES
1. Opening Prayer
Good morning class!
Good morning
Ma`am
Before we proceed to our discussion,
may I request everyone to please
stand for our prayer.
_______, please lead the prayer
Prayer…
Okay you may take your seat!

2. Checking of Attendance
Is there anyone absent in my class?
None Ma`am
Okay that’s good.

3. Assignment
Okay, kindly pass your assignment.
Rexcill, please collect.

4. Review of the Past Lesson

What is our lesson yesterday?

Ma’am! it’s all about
Natural Resources.
Now, who can recall the meaning
of Natural Resources?
Yes, ___________
Ma’am Natural
Resources are
materials that can be
found in the
environment.
Okay very good!
How about the 2 types of Natural
Resources? Yes, __________
Ma’am, the
Renewable and Non-
renewable Resources.
Ver good! So, what is the difference
between the two?
Ma’am! Renewable
Resources is
unlimited and develop
in a short period of
time while Non-
renewable Resources
cannot be replaced
once destroyed.

Yes, That’s right.

Can you give an examples of Renewable
Resources?
Ma’am animals
Ma’am water
Ma’am plants
Very good! How about Non-renewable
Resources?

Ma’am fossil fuels

Ma’am mountains
Ma’am rocks
Okay very good class! We can now
proceed to our next topic.
5. Motivation

The students will watch a video presentation.

B. DEVELOPMENTAL LESSON
1. Unlocking Difficulties
To unlock the following terms:

 Atmosphere envelope of gases that surrounds the earth.

 Troposphere layer of the atmosphere closest to the earth.
 Stratosphere second layer of the atmosphere.
 Mesosphere middle layers and the coldest layer.
 Troposphere it is the hottest layer.
 Exosphere the upper layer of our atmosphere, where atoms and molecules
escape into space, is called the exosphere.

2. Lecture and Discussion

Our next topic is about the layers of
the Earth’s atmosphere,
Okay class, anyone who can give
an idea about the atmosphere?
Yes, _________
Ma’am Atmosphere is the
envelope of gases
surrounding earth.
Very good!
Now, do you know how many layers the
Earth’s atmosphere has?

Ma’am, 5.
Very Good. Then what is the first layer?
Yes, ______
Ma’am! Troposphere

That’s right. Troposphere is the first

layer of the atmosphere. This layer is
closest to the Earth’s Atmosphere. This
layer is known as the lowest atmosphere.
All weathers happen in the troposphere.

The next layer is?

Ma’am Stratosphere!
Okay kindly read its definition, yes ______
Stratosphere is the layer that
extends to about 50 km from
Earth’s surface. It contains
the ozone layer that absorbs
much of the sun’s harmful
radiation that would
otherwise be dangerous to
plants and animal life.
Above the troposphere lies the
stratosphere where jet airplanes fly
because it is very stable. And ozone layer
is found in this layer stratosphere.

And the third layer is?

Ma’am Mesosphere!
Very good! When we say mesosphere,
meso means middle. Okay class,
kindly read the mesosphere.
Mesosphere is the layer
between 50 km and 90 km
above the Earth’s surface.
Air in this layer is very thin
and cold.
Yes, that’s right! That is why it is also
considered as the coldest layer.
And meteors or rock fragments burn
up in the mesosphere.

Next layer is the thermosphere,

kindly read yes ________
Thermosphere is between 90
km and 300 km above the
Earth. It is the hottest layer.
Space shuttles fly in this area
and it is also where auroras
are found.
This is aurora borealis, (show picture)
and it can only be found in the area
of north pole and south pole.

Next the last layer Exosphere, kindly

read _________

Exosphere is the upper limit

of our atmosphere. This layer
of the atmosphere merges
into space. Satellites are
stationed in this area, 300 km
to 10000 km from Earth.
“Exo” means outer, so exosphere is the outer
layer of the Earth.

Do you have any question class?

None Ma’am
Okay very good!

3. Generalization

Now class, what is the atmosphere?

Yes _________
Ma’am atmosphere is the
envelope of gases
surrounding earth.
How about the five layers of the atmosphere?
Yes _________ Ma’am, troposphere
Ma’am, stratosphere
Ma’am, mesosphere
Ma’am, thermosphere
Ma’am, exosphere

Are they important?

Yes ma’am!
Why?
Because they protect us from
sun rays, harmful radiation
and meteorites or rock
fragments.
That’s correct!

IV. ASSESSMENT

The teacher will group the students into three and ask them to arrange the
pictures of each layers of the atmosphere.
They will choose a leader to present the activity. (The activity will serve
as their quiz).

V. ASSIGNMENT

Direction: Write in your notebook, and answer the following question.

a. What is the greenhouse effect?

b. What are causes of greenhouse effect?
