Activity 1:
1. What is Cellular respiration?
a. Metabolic reactions in the cell that are designed to convert nutrients from food into
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
b. Cellular respiration involves 3 different cycles:
i. Glycolysis
ii. Citric Acid cycle or “Kreb’s” cycle
iii. Oxidative phosphorylation
2. Differentiate aerobic from anaerobic cellular respiration.
a. Aerobic Cellular Respiration
i. Cellular respiration that proceeds in the presence of oxygen
ii. Both glycolysis and Kreb's cycle takes place in this type of respiration.
iii. It provides more energy i.e. 38 ATP molecules
iv. The end products are CO2 and H2O
b. Anaerobic Cellular Respiration
i. Cellular respiration that proceeds in the absence of oxygen
ii. Only glycolysis occurs in this type of respiration.
iii. It provides less energy i.e. 2 ATP molecules
iv. The end products are either ethyl alcohol or lactic acid and CO2
3. What are the major stages of Aerobic Cellular respiration? Give a brief
description of how the process works.
a. Glycolysis
i. Phosphorylation and splitting of glucose
b. Pyruvate Oxidation (Link Reaction)
i. Decarboxylation and dehydrogenation of pyruvate
c. Citric Acid Cycle (Kreb's Cycle)
i. Cyclical pathway with enzyme - controlled reactions
d. Oxidative Phosphorylation
i. Production of ATP through oxidation of hydrogen atoms
