Inverse Functions

The inverse of a function f(x) is f -1 (x). It

reverses the action of that function.

Not all functions have an inverse.

You can use horizontal line test to identify

inverse functions. If a horizontal line crosses
the graph of a function more than once, there
is no inverse function.
The graph of the inverse function is
reflection of that function in the line y = x.
The graph of the inverse function is
reflection of that function in the line y = x.

If f (x) = 3x -2,
find the inverse function f – 1(x).

y = 3x – 2
x = 3y – 2
x + 2 = 3y
